Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. Looks Really Great In Motion

By Ishaan . June 12, 2014 . 5:01pm

Last night, Nintendo announced Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. for the Nintendo 3DS. Developed by Intelligent Systems, this is a turn-based strategy game with third-person shooter elements, similar to the Valkyria Chronicles series. Earlier today, Nintendo’s Treehouse team showed the game off, and you can watch the video below.

Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. takes place in a steampunk London, where wireless technology like the radio has only just been invented. While screenshots of the game aren’t the nicest thing to look at, it does look really nice in motion. Art director Takako Sakai says she drew inspiration for the game from comic book artists like Jack Kirby and Bruce Timm.

You can learn more about Code Name: S.T.E.A.M. in our report from Nintendo’s reveal event last night. The game is planned for release in 2015.

  • I see a reskinned valkyirea chronicles….

    This isn’t a bad thing.

    • LM009

what I’m seeing is a fugly valkyria chronicles clone

      • Time Sage

I see Sakura wars but without the dateing Sim and uglier art.

      • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

yet Valkyria Chronicles borrows heavenly from Fire Emblem

        • ishyg

Please explain. I’ve never played a FE game before, but I really dig VC, so if there is a similarity between the two I’d like to know about it. Might change my mind about FE.

          • LM009

VC basically has 3rd person mixed with turn based elements, FE is really nothing alike to VC unless you want to group anything turn based into one big jumble

          • idrawrobots

One turn based strategy game is nothing like another turn based strategy game. VC is a little like a lot of things, in ways it even reminds me of Grandia 2.

          • ishyg

I know VC already. I want to know something about FE and how @DanielJeanbaptiste:disqus arrived at the conclusion that it borrowed “heavenly” from FE, whatever that means.

But as @haseyo:disqus pointed out already, there’s no shared elements between the game besides the being turn-based strategy games. Thanks.

          • LM009

well FE is like FF tactics, tactics ogre, SRW, advance wars that sorta stuff, its grid based SRPG. I’d say give it a try, since it’s really fun.

          • ishyg

Up in my alley then. Thanks, I’ll give it a spin later.

        • 하세요

What? I’ve played FE and VC and there’s not an ounce of either game’s elements shared besides the fact that you “take turns.” That’s like saying Mario is a shooter because he has a Fire Flower.

      • Enzo

The word “clone” is the part of this that makes me wonder why you have so many upvotes.

      • Fronkhead

As good as VC is, similarities end by viewpoint: STEAM has no minimap or top-down view, and is played entirely in third person.

Personally speaking though, I’m just hoping its battle system can’t be broken like VC’s, being able to power up lone units with commander powers to take over enemy bases with ease and zero strategy was a big issue, at least with the first game.

        • LM009

oh yea LOL I remember that haha that’s kinda fun in of itself, spam like double move and caution or whatnot on alicia and run to capture base

      • RedFayt

I just upvoted because I saw the word “fugly”. Sums up the game in one word. With that said, day one buy.

  • James Enk

yep it does look nice in motion same with a lot of 3DS games, the cut scenes i didn’t like so much but everything else seems nice

  • Shippoyasha

I’m still turned off by the artstyle, but mostly how grimy and brown everything looks. They don’t have to make it so dark just because it’s a steampunk look. And the comic-outline is just way too thick and I hope they tone it down a little.

There’s some semblance of Sakura Wars,Valkyria Chronicles and X-Com with the whole special team vs aliens motif.

    • Grimy and brown? I don’t think you’re looking at the same game as everyone else.

      • revenent hell

Actually, I kind of agree with the “brown” thing.

The darker “gold” tones do appear as shades of brown, maybe not as dark as you would think for brown, but it looks like it enough. Plus there is all the tumbleweed colors (shades of tan which go in to the brown sphere) That pop up/are in most of the video.

I also think the “grimy” might mean all the green tones that are throughout the game. It kind of looks like a haze or shadowing which does look odd for certain parts of the video for the background.

    • revenent hell

      I’m with you on this.

    • SolRevr

Seems pretty cheerful to me for a steampunk game. I doubt all of the environments will be outside with the dirt and rocks that happen to be earth toned. It does make the vibrant enemies, items, and effects stand out against the backdrop.

  • NorthernPatches

Videos never do 3DS games justice. That said this game looks amazing. Glad to see a new IP and one I have such high hopes for too.

  • straightthrucru

I hope it has a left-handed mode! I don’t own a circle pad pro, either.

  • 하세요

I want to see some more consistent play soon hopefully. This was a nice video but because of the translating back and forth, it got frustrating watching them sit still for awhile before doing anything.

Looking forward to it. VC is my second favorite RPG series. Hell I’m wearing Alicia’s outfit in PSO2 and I don’t see myself removing it for awhile xD

  • Shane Guidaboni

This looks a lot better than I originally thought. Consider my mind changed!

  • King Dedede

Seems good, but they should have explained the game faster because that made the gameplay seems slower than turtles.

  • SetzerGabbiani

I’d give it a shot. It’s not an immediate buy for me yet, but it looks good…and I love VC, so it has that going for it. Anything with IS behind it is worth a look.

  • May or may not buy this one. Looks good, but not worth a day one purchase for me.

  • Zero_Destiny

Okay, I was actually rather worried on this last night. I wasn’t sure I could agree on what the information was saying about the developer’s vision and the screenshots did not do it any favors.

I’m not finished with this video yet but I’m actually pleasantly surprised. The game looks nice in action, the comic sfx moving like JoJo, the camera pans being comic strips, and there’s some nice voice acting. So far the combat thankfully looks a lot better than I was lead to believe from the screens too. Seriously those screens made it look a lot more simplistic than I’m seeing here. ^^;; I’m starting to feel a bit more confident on this one. The lack of the map/radar though, I’m not liking it.

  • benhofb

I dunno. Originally I was pretty turned off by the art style and direction (especially comparing it to some of IS’s other games). But actually seeing it in action and everything has kind of changed my mind. Sure, I agree with some of the gripes about thick lines and a darker, more brown color palette, but I think everyone is forgetting that this game is set to release in 2015… I highly doubt the finished build will look exactly like what we saw on screen during their demo. And even if it does, I don’t think that should convince anyone to not buy the game. Graphics and art direction can only take you so far at the end of the day, ya’know? Nonetheless, I am very excited about it being made by Intelligent Systems though. I always love their games, no matter what, so I have high expectations for this one!

  • Ban The Jackass

Who’s the translator. If it were me, it’ll take me some time to actually translate even though I’m bilingual too.

  • kylehyde

I’m glad that I was right (yes I dare to say that) about this game looking good in-motion, the gameplay looks really solid, the art style certainly is different but is great, come on, lets be open minded about the art style, is quirky, yes, but many games that I love have quirky art style and I bet that Mario art style was considered quirky for the first time that it was shown, even the concept. Also this is intelligent systems, unless Miyamoto screw the things, I don’t see a reason to worry about the quality of this game, at the moment this game is in my must have list and I’m glad that maybe it will come soon as expected (already rated by the ESRB and we already saw the art box).

P.S. Is nice to see fresh blood on charge of this project, it was time, seriously most of the nintendo big names have more 50 and even that they are still kick butts, what is going to happen to nintendo the day they are not around, is time for the new talents to make a name on nintendo

  • Daniel

Seen enough. It will be mine oh yes it will be mine
Garth: Live in the now man
    Me: Shut up Dana

  • Kelohmello

I definitely like it alot better in motion. I can definitely see myself trying the game at least. The music was great from what I’ve heard, too, very AW:DoR style.

  • Göran Isacson

Exploding eagles set to the US National Anthem.

I am okay with this. Would still like to see some more British characters defending their home turf though. Also, an explanation for the lion.

  • Scissors

I dig the art direction, except for those character designs. I actually really dislike the character designs.

  • Brimfyre

Well I like that Valkyria Chronicles is slowly becoming it’s own genre of games. Hopefully, if these are successful we will see Sega return to the franchise.
I almost typed that with a straight face.

  • isotrex

I was thinking Freedom Force especially on the art style and voice overs.

  • Danwen Huang

I really love the Bruce Timm marries with Scott Pilgrimy artstyle. The graphic design in this game may not be everyone’s taste but is no less unique and welldone. The gameplay design sounds Intellegent system standards (you’d not entrust a strategy game in more capable hands).

This one’s going to get the best cult following that’s for sure, so people shouldn’t be so dismissive yet :). Nintendo churning out new IPs is a good thing (well I hope, only time will tell).

  • J_Joestar

Looks way better than the screenshots made me believe at first.

  • Leo Lima

Lovecraft inspired aliens? You buy me!
