Persona 4 Ultimax Arena Videos Show Off Shadow Labrys And Chie

Atlus have shared another two character videos for Persona 4 Arena Ultimax—this time, it’s Shadow Labrys and Persona 4’s Chie Satonaka. You can watch them below.

    Chies finally using bufu? Didn’t get that far in 4, but why does she have a agi skill if her thing is bufu?

      Its the final skill that she learns, Agneyastra (not sure if I spelled this right). Its a skill that does multiple physical attacks to all enemies. For some reason the animation for a physical attack is falling meteors.

      Yeah, Chie crouching light Persona attack in P4AU now causes freeze. Still no actual ice projectile from her (not that she needs one)

    Again no info on Persona 5 the most important of the new releases. No news of SMT 5 either and no news on what happened to Devil survivor 2 Overclocked or any news on a sequel guess they might as well just kill it all off and stick to Persona only. After all I guess only me and a few others actually care about their other franchises as well it really does suck when you are in the minority.

          Oh sure, I want Break Record to come out but I enjoy Persona 3/Persona 4 too so I can pass the time until Atlus is secure again and they can make other stuff.

        True they’re not a huge company like Square or Bamco who can pop out several big, main line titles a year. Given what I know about their history (which , I’ll admit isn’t much) it seems like a huge speed up in production getting so many companion titles so close to each other.

        Yeah. We probably wn’t need t wait as much as we did fr IV but it’ll be at least a cuple f years before something gets announced.

      Unfortunately we’re going to have to wait until at least TGS before we get any more info on Persona 5. I just hope that after all these years of waiting since Persona 4 came out its going to live up to its hype.

        I swear Sega is secretly plotting with Nintendo to make Persona a Nintendo only franchise maybe that is why they are taking so long to butter us all up first.

          Nintendo already has the other Shin Megami Tensei games and Etrian Odyssey under their belts, only a matter of time before console war squabbling.

      Persona 5 doesn’t come out until Fall so probably October or later on. Try to find information about it in July/August. This game comes out in less than two months so yeah you won’t find a lot for P5. Also for Break Record? That’s in production hell. SMT 5 isn’t even in development as far as I know. I think you are thinking about SMTxFE which was mentioned at E3 (but overshadowed by Smash obviously.)

    So there’s no shadow Shadow Labrys? Well, with how the shadow versions have that metallic voice thing going, I guess a shadow Shadow Labrys would sound pretty wierd. Or maybe she would be like normal Labrys but still able to use Asterius. Does Shadow Labrys get the perks that the other shadows get?

    I don’t want to be “that guy”… but I’m probably the ONLY guy on the planet who HATES Shadow Labrys’s design and gameplay. Please hear me out without hating me and while keeping it civil, ok?

    MASSIVE SPOILERS FROM P4 AND P4A AHEAD, YOU’VE BEEN WARNED!

    - In P4, Shadows start “disguised” as the victims and then become HUGE monsters when they get rejected.
    - I noticed that the Shadows are a twisted combination on the victim AND his or her future Persona… most of the time. (Kanji’s a stretch safe for the black & white scheme and Teddie’s is basically a Shadow of a Shadow.)
    - In P4A, there’s this HUGE build-up before Labrys rejects her Shadow, be in Story or Arcade mode… although it’s more apparent in Arcade mode.
    - The final result is… a recycled sprite set with a new Persona… Seriously, are you kidding me? All that tension for a half-cloned character?

    Ok, YES, Shadow Labrys doesn’t play at all like Labrys, YES, Ariadne and Asterius make Labrys different… but that doesn’t excuse why Shadow Labrys looks like Labrys only with yellow eyes and a darker shader.

    Furthermore, a large character, similar to Iron Tager, Hugo, Sentinel, Potemkin and such, wouldn’t work adequately in P4A, mainly because of the Persona mecanic, so I wouldn’t have expected a huge monster as a PC for Shadow Labrys.

    However, what I cannot get behind is the fact that ASW literally took Labrys’s sprite set, removed the Chain Knuckle, which is a really odd move since she does use it in cutscenes, and called it a day. They swapped Ariadne with Asterius, but they still didn’t changed the other half of the character.

    My gripe is that Shadow Labrys should have gotten a redesign completely. She could have gotten a different stance with the axe, like being merged with one of her arms and have the chain being able to whip it out like a flail. She could have gotten hunched forward like an animal, she could have gotten cracks with seeping blood over her body, she have gotten chains wrapped around her legs, she could have gotten horns on her head, she have gotten more savage and sadistic moves instead of the Guillotine Axe, such as a projectile where she swings the axe blade at you. I could go on and on…

    You know how it pissed people off when Decapre was revealed and how people pointed her as a Cammy clone, even if she had new stuff? Yeah, that happened with me and Shadow Labrys BEFORE that, and I’m sure that other games had that before too.

    So yeah, I don’t like Shadow Labrys’s design at all. When the game doesn’t use a concept at its whole, it kinda annoys me.

      You know… I agree. It was something of a let down. I liked the whole Ariadne/Asterius at odds aspect, but the least they could’ve done was alter Shadow ‘Labrys’ herself a little, (A chain axe for an arm would’ve been rad). I can only assume that the designers of the game didn’t get to use their full skills when it came to her shadow, due to fighting in a fighting game capabilities/limitations or whatever. Risking her range of movement i suppose? But still, your suggestions would’ve been wonderful to have implemented. I love Labrys, as a new member, and as a new character on her own, and her voice actress, but this is something i just don’t like.

        I… honestly have no idea what happened really. Yes, Shadow Labrys had her frame data reworked entirely, so she wouldn’t play exactly like Labrys; yes, she has new Persona attacks, Persona special moves, Persona SP Skills and Instant Kill, but… here’s what NOT different:
        - Same normals as Labrys.
        - Same special move, the Guillotine Axe
        - Same Auto-combo, safe for the SP Skill
        - Same SP Skill, the Brutal Axe
        - Same stance
        - Same Furious Action, the 5th Gen Axe Slash

        It would have taken a brand-new character, based on a crazed, half-demolished Labrys, which would have led to new normals, new special moves, etc… Time and budget constraints as they might have been, that’s kinda hard to swallow when they animated a brand new Persona from scratch.

        Asterius is fine, but Shadow Labrys isn’t really…

          Whereas I agree that Shadow Labrys is a bit disappointing when considering the character’s design potential, I feel that they still put in a considerable amount of time in creating shadow labrys’. Like you said, they reworked all of her framedata on the recycled normals, but they also made those moves, originally created for a rushdown character, able to mesh with the wonky playstyle of a pet character. Adapting labrys’ moves to s. labrys’ design is quite an achievement in my book.

            True, but if you’re gonna have a 2nd version of Labrys that doesn’t play like Labrys, why have it LOOK like Labrys in the end?

            A completely different character still would have worked with Asterius as Shadow Labrys is right now if it would have been reworked.

            They bothered making a new Persona with an idle stance since it stays present, plus more animation frames due to the delays in its attacks… but had to recycle Labrys’s sprites and reprogram her frame data? Something went missing here… Either they ran out of resources or simply didn’t bother…

            The same exact thing can be said about Sho Minazuki in Ultimax: his Persona sprite set is a reduced non-Persona sprite set. While I don’t know the details about his moves, I know for sure that he has the same normals and stance… when we both know that there’s more than one way to wield two swords at once, including, say, the mantis style, where one holds the sword with the blade pointing backward.

            The way I see it, they took no-Persona Sho and replaced some of his attacks with Tsukoyomi… or vice-versa, depending on which version came first.

            You can argue that the data is different, but to me, it has to go BEYOND that. For examples:
            - NESTS Kyo and Iori with Flames in KOF 13 play much like their current versions, but they have new moves and replacement moves. What’s unique is that their ENTIRE sprite sets have been redrawn with new costumes. Even if each version shares some attacks with the other, the fact that they were redrawn is still impressive, but at the same time, it shows that it wasn’t a half-baked job.

            - Order Sol isn’t Sol Badguy with a new costume, but Sol Badguy with a brand new moveset AND a new costume. Same goes with Robo-Ky.

            - Mu-12 isn’t just a clone of Nu-13. She has new attacks, a new style of play and of course a new look.

            - Yang started as a direct clone of Yun in SF3, before being decloned into a fresh-new character in 2nd Impact.

            - Orochi Iori in the KOF games had a new stance, new normals, new specials and new supers, making him a different beast than regular Iori.

            - While no detail has been yet revealed, Adachi’s Persona surely doesn’t have the same exact attacks as Yu’s Izanagi.

            I just feel like clone characters are just cheap ways to pad a roster due to constraints or just plain old laziness. SSB Melee was a great offender with their clones; Decapre was chosen because she was modeled after Cammy, reducing time and money issues; Fukua in Skullgirls trolled Capcom with that same tactic, as Fukua is simply a retooled Filia.

            There’s nothing really that would have prevented ASW from making a brand-new appearance for Shadow Labrys and Sho. Right now, they are just recycled characters with new Personas. Instead of getting 4 completely unique characters, we end up getting 2 unique ones and 2 half-baked ones.

            I agree that, given the time they must have put into changing labrys’ moveset for s.labrys, they could’ve made a new character entirely. When you bring up yun/yang, v13/mu12, ky/roboky, I now see what we could have had, and I admit that it would’ve been preferred.

            At the same time, I’m glad S. Labrys was included in vanilla p4a, the game had a small cast as it was already.

            Agreed, very insightful responses. Thank you. This game already seems set, so I guess I can only hope that Rise, Adachi, and the rest of the new set, and the plot more than make up for the shortcomings.

      I think the reason that shadow labrys looks the way she does instead of being a giant monster like the shadows in persona 4 is because she’s supposed to be a throwback to the shadows in persona 2 where the shadow versions of characters are literally just them with yellow eyes and they have an evil persona. ( well that and probably its cheaper just to reuse the sprite)

        The problem I see is that P4 is plastered all over it; the way she gains Asterius is taken straight from P4. You can argue that past games were like that, but Arena was “supposed” to follow P4 more closely.

        It was like “Oh, huge flames and silhouette!”, but then the sprite stayed the same… what a letdown…

        They made 12 other characters with 12 Personas… but couldn’t make 1 more, even with a new Persona done? It feels… weird, like “shut up and finish your work while you’re at it.” kinda weird.

          While it does have p4 in the title the Arena series falls back on older persona concepts. there’s actually proof that shadow labrys is supposed to be like the shadows of persona 2. in the gallery mode one of her audio clips she says “reversed persona” which is what persona 2 shadows said when evoking their persona. also the reason that they have the shadow characters in this new arena applies to the whole persona 2 concept where they are yellow eyed doppelgangers

            Except that the entire build-up misled to a drastic change in appearance. Even if it WAS simply a yellow-eyed doppelganger, NOTHING would have prevented ASW to make it a NEW character with a brand-new moveset instead of recycling one.

            They already changed the Persona, might as well change the combat style while you’re at it.

            Shadow Labrys should have been redesigned to fight like a savage warrior, not like a calculating machine. Give her reckless swings, brutal slashes, overhead scary jumping attacks, lowers her speed in exchange of more power, etc…

            ANYTHING to demonstrate that she wouldn’t fight EXACTLY like Labrys would.

            Well a buddy of mine likes shadow labrys better than regular labrys. But yeah i think i would have been better if shadow labrys at least had different supers

            My opinion on the subject is that I just hate clones altogether. If you’re gonna have clones, don’t. If you’re gonna have doppelgangers, don’t make them similar and/or copies of each other.

            Luigi got decloned completely from Mario in both Melee and even more in Brawl, Falco got decloned from Fox in Brawl, Toon Link got decloned from Young Link in Brawl, Ganondorf… yeah, ok, didn’t get decloned that much from Captain Falcon.

            Akuma, Gouken, Dan, Sakura and Oni feel more decloned from Ryu than Ken and Evil Ryu do, as of SFIV.

            Sure, some people like Shadow Labrys as she is (I don’t because she’s vulnerable to the Persona Breaks too easily, but that’s just me), but she could have been even more different than Labrys.

            I’d love to see your opinion on how Skullgirls handled Filia and Fukua being “clones”, bearing in mind that Fukua started out as a playable April Fools’ joke using old code done over a few days.

            From what I’ve heard, Fukua was never intended to be playable for real and was, as you said, a joke, based on a typo. Furthermore, that was also a jab in Capcom’s guts because of their Decapre reveal, which, as you might already know, gathered a LOT of hatred due to being mostly a Cammy clone. The fact that they added her to the roster for an April’s Fool joke is proof of that. Fukua is and will remain a superfluous addition. Over time, she MIGHT get her own movelist though.

            Ah I see then. You weren’t actually informed about how she worked. The animations were the only things that were reused. She feels very different from Filia being a zoner/grappler mix because the old code was from the early game tests when Filia was the only character with art made; a zoner type Filia and a grappler type Filia were created and those were combined into Fukua’s moves.

            A lot of move properties from Filia were altered, differently mapped normals (some were scrapped moves not used by Filia, seen in Double’s moveset who ultilizes a lot of unused moves among the cast in the first place), projectiles, armored grabs, double jump instead of air dash, all specials and supers are completely different. Her intro, win and even idle poses were using different art and the pitch of her voice tracks was audibly lower, like how the Shadows get that “voice of the legion” filter.

            As you said that over time she might get her own movelist, but all that was Day 1 stuff on April 1st. By the time she was patched into the console versions, she had a more specials/supers added to bring her up to the amount other characters have, had some new animations voluntarily created for said specials to polish them up, and even her own “clone” stage (with new music). All for free. The only things that remain a joke are her name and her gag story. Most of us found her playstyle and everything else different enough to urge Lab Zero to keep her in after her initial removal when April Fools was over.

            I tried looking for a side by side comparison video that showcases at least the aesthetic differences but couldn’t find it so you get wall of text I’m sorry.

      It paid off for them cause now everyone has shadow selves in P4U. For them to make COMPLETELY new characters is just too much. Plus the shadows are clearly distinct in playstyle anyways. So nitpicky. People these days. smfh

        Shadow versions =/= Shadow Labrys

        She was designed to be completely different from Labrys, but in the end, they ended up recycling sprites.

        The Shadow versions are like the Unlimited characters in BlazBlue. What I would have liked better is that Labrys and Shadow Labrys be more like Hazama and Yuki Terumi, and no, both aren’t the same.

    Looks like there’s more combo potential in this one. It’s not like i’m bad at these types of games but I always found myself using a lot of the same combos in the first one just because the variety wasn’t really all that great and a lot of things weren’t practical. Still not expecting to see this one be anywhere near Blazblue or the like, but an improvement is an improvement. Though i’ll still mostly be buying (importing, since I don’t wanna wait a year for a probably digital only release) for the story. US release date can’t come soon enough

        I am aware. I am not in the US. I’m waiting for the US release date to import it because I am European and given what happened with P4A recently and of course the release of SMT4 here, I have no hope for this coming here physically. I heard this one won’t be region locked like the last one and have no intention of supporting these shitty digital releases. I probably didn’t get my point across properly the first time

    Labrys is on of the most BORING characters in P4 Arena, however Shadow labrys just kickass, she looks great and has and AwEsOmE persona to boot, I wish she could replace BORING Labrys permanently.

      Now they aren’t.
      Shabby even said that she’s finally herself.
      And the hacking has nothing to do with Shabby…
      Shabby was a shadow that transformed into Ariandne (just like shadows of Investigation Team transformed into their respective personas)
      She’s pretty much like Yu’s Shadow now. Created so everyone have their shadow counterparts.

    I came for Chie, and I was not disappointed. Even though I’m average at fighting games, will definitely main her once again XD.

    Also, since Koromaru is playabe (sort of) anyone else kinda hoping for a Fox DLC? I mean she DID go into the T.V. with the P4 cast.
