Nintendo 3DS And Wii U Get A Cross-Buy Game In Europe

By Ishaan . June 30, 2014 . 6:31am

This morning, Nintendo of Europe sent out their usual press release outlining this week’s Nintendo eShop update. Among the list of titles headed to the eShop this week is Squids Odyssey—and it’s a cross-platform purchase that you can buy once and play on both the 3DS and Wii U.

Squids Odyssey is an indie RPG where you control a squad of squids to free their homeland from a black ooze that is mysteriously mutating the sea life. Squids come in for types—shooters, troopers, scouts and healers—and you can fling them across the battlefield.

Nintendo of Europe say that, if you purchase Squids Odyssey on the Nintendo 3DS, you’ll be able to download the Wii U version of the game for free, provided the two devices are linked using the same Nintendo Network ID. Squids Odyssey costs €12.99/£9.99.

Cross-platform purchases are common on iPhone and Android devices, as well as in the case of certain PlayStation games. Nintendo have discussed the idea of incorporating cross-platform purchases on 3DS and Wii U, but have not officially announced just when this functionality will be introduced. We suspect Squids Odyssey is a special case, and we’re following up to try and find out.

Now, Smash bros cross-buy, please (or a discount, at least)

    • David García Abril

Considering both games are gonna have a lot of different content (stages and game modes), I doubt it. :(

      lol

Nintendo won’t do Cross-Buy for their ROM dumps on the Virtual Console. They aren’t doing that for games that could sell millions of units by themselves.

      • Fronkhead

While I’d like to see VC games become single purchases, they are certainly more than a ROM-dump to fit a one-size-fits-all emulator.

The discount for Wii to Wii U games was a step in the right direction, though, but I can’t see any major, across the board changes happening to cross platform purchases until QOL arrives where all systems share the same operating system and developers only need to target one platform rather than make two separate versions.

There’s no chance that we’ll buy one and get the other free, but I too am hoping for a discount. I think both for $80 would be pretty reasonable.

Baby steps…. baby steps…. baby steps

I wish the Wii U VC games are cross-buy.

Throwing this out there, the Squids series is absolutely amazing in terms of gameplay, characters, and plot. I know some people might be thrown off by the fact that this was an iOS game, but don’t be. It’s a great experience, and I recommend it wholeheartedly. This game is both of the iOS ones put together, touched up, and has some new content, which I’m really looking forward to. I don’t say this often, but please support this great title.

Thanks for this. I haven’t had an iOS device for a while so I missed out on the games (will probably pick up the next iPad though), but I’m certainly more interested after reading your post.

      • Strain42

I’m really glad to hear this. I love this series, and anyone I can spread it to makes me happy. By the end of the game, I really found myself caring about all of the characters.

  • ShimaPantsu

I wouldn’t read too much into it. It’s probably an isolated case.

  • Firion Hope

    That’s awesome! I hope that becomes a trend…
