Square Enix have released a new trailer for Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix that illustrates the graphical differences between the HD Remix version and the original non-HD visuals. It’s actually an “interactive” trailer of sorts—if you watch it on its YouTube page, you can switch between HD and SD.

Kingdom Hearts HD 2.5 Remix includes Kingdom Hearts II Final Mix, Kingdom Hearts: Birth by Sleep Final Mix, and movies from Kingdom Hearts Re:coded. The compilation will be released on December 2nd in North America and December 5th in Europe.

:| I never played the PS2 version, but can someone explain that costume changes?

    • sillyfudgemonkeys

In the US PS2 ver, we only got the “pumpkin” costume. In the final mix of the game (only in japan) Sora got a “santa” costume for the “santa side” of the Nightmare before Christmas world. :3

      • Anime10121

Dont forget two new musical themes for Christmas town as well, one for field, and another for battle :D

  • Shippoyasha

I’m a lot more excited for this HD remix than the last game. Really liked the Roxas angle they put in. Even though I remember a lot of people hated Roxas when the game was first released.

    • Anime10121

Probably didnt hate Roxas outright, just the section of the game that delayed them from playing Sora while Roxas went around doing odd jobs (And I admit, up until Roxas started actually fighting, it bores me as well after the initial playthrough)

      • Shippoyasha

I feel the same way. It was hard to get a bearing on what role Roxas played while going through the game the first time. Though it was a unique feeling to get lost in the character’s story.

  • fairysun

I only play the first game.
Is this a good remake to catch up with the story?
Or do I need to play the spin off with the weird number?

    • sillyfudgemonkeys

Yeah it’s fine. I didn’t really play “chain of memories” between 1 and 2. the DS game 300-something helps a bit with the character Roxas and the organization. But it’s still easy to follow. :)

      • Guest

i think birth by sleep is also important to understand the story

        • sillyfudgemonkeys

Yeah I agree. :) I thought they were just asking between KH 1 and KH 2 if they needed to play any other games. In my opinion you don’t really /need/ to. But if you go onto anything past KH2…yes….you do. I’m only saying you can still comprehend the story without them, but playing them will give you the bigger picture. Sorry if I confused people. >.<

    • Zebliin

In my opinion the games you need to play to be fully up to date with the story are KH1, KH2 and KH 3D. MAYBE Chain Of Memories, but you can get by without it. The others are extra, including “the spin off with the weird number”

      • Anime10121

Not including BBS in the necessary games… wut is dis idoneven :/

        • Zebliin

I didn’t mention it as it doesn’t follow the main characters. Good to have the background on Xehanort and the keyblade masters though

          • Anime10121

But it follows the main plot/story/focus of the series. It also introduces the focal point of what KH3 and 3D even focuses on. Just because the game doesnt star Sora, Kairi, and Riku (even though they still are a pretty big focus), doesnt mean the game isnt important.

Hell, its honestly more important than 3D, as 3D does little to actually advance anything in the main story outside of the last few cutscenes in the final world that throws all those mindfreaks!

      • AsianDude2o9

Wouldn’t birth by sleep also be important for the story

        • Zebliin

Yeah it would be, probably not as important as 1, 2 or 3D though as it doesn’t follow the story of the main characters

          • Rayhan PromisedGallery

it introduces the villain of KH3…

          • Zebliin

It’s been aaages since I played any of them to be honest ^^’ are you talking about Xehanort? Isn’t he talked about and shown in 1 and/or 2? BBS is the first time he’s shown before taking Terra’s body though right?

          • Federico

Yeah thats the first time we see that.

          • I’d disagree– Birth By Sleep is extremely important. It gives necessary origins, and the three main characters of the game are becoming more and more of a focal point as the games go on.

But really, it’s also the best KH game of the series, at least to me. It’s worth just /playing/

    • 하세요

You’ll still need to play Dream Drop Distance to understand what’s going to happen in KH3. You may -think- you understand, but you won’t. At all.

Just play all of 1.5 as well, and if you don’t have a 3DS, look on KH Wiki to see what Dream Drop’s story is about.

Playing 1 and 2 will not grasp the story at all, as the “spin-offs” are all pretty vital to the plot in one way or another, whether it may seem like it or not.

    • sillyfudgemonkeys

Guess I should clarify what I mean by “easy to follow”. If your worried about only playing KH 1 and the KH 2.5 remix, you’ll be fine. If you want to know what’s going on in KH3, it’s best you play the spinoffs (so basically KH1.5 and Dream Drop Distance as well). But if your wondering if you need to /really/ play Chain of Memories and 358/2) anything between KH 1 and KH 2. Not really, you’ll be fine. :)

    • new_tradition

      In terms of 1.5 ReMIX…

IMO, Chain of Memories explains why you start KH2 the way you do and more or less some character absences. However, I did originally play KH2 before CoM, and got by just fine.

As for 358/2 Days, it’s hard to judge for me. (Trying to avoid spoilers) Right off I wanna say yes, it’s important, but about half the plot of the game doesn’t get mentioned outside the game until you play KH:DDD, and even then it’s a vague mention. On the other hand, the other half of the plot explains why certain characters are did what they did, along with some character relationships.

So short answer, at least watch youtube vids of CoM and Days, though buying the 1.5 HD collection is a great value. And definitely make sure you get this 2.5 ReMIX collection. KH2 and BbS are super important to the story. Frankly, KH2 had a conclusive ending more or less. It was BbS that gives the reason KH3 will exist.

KH:DDD is also important, but a lot of people are speculating that they might do an HD release of the game in some format, so maybe wait..?

    • Anime10121

I’d argue you still need to play CoM, while it doesnt necessarily push the plot forward (mind wipe at the end) it DOES provide a lot of character development and overall plot details. It’ll also give you an introduction to the other Organization members that were already defeated by KH2! Its also the prologue to BBS’s amazing combat, so there’s that too ;)

But yeah, this game right here basically gives you everything else you need to know before KH3. 3D’s also a good play before 3, but its only REALLY necessary for you to watch the cutscenes from the final world for both Sora and Riku. But I’d still play it if you can though because it is an amazing game!

    • Steven Higgins

KH, KH II, BbS and the end of 3D are all imperative to the plot and will be necessary to understand what’s going on in KH III. CoM, Days and Re:Coded all serve to extend the story and provide background of certain characters but are not necessary to understand the over all plot.

    • new_tradition

Oh, is that what it was? I never noticed it when I played the game, but I kept hearing about it everywhere and didn’t understand what people were talking about xD

      • Shippoyasha

Look at picture’s upper left. There’s two Kairis standing next to eachother.

        • new_tradition

Yes, I see it NOW. I’m talking about how I never noticed it before >.>

          • Shippoyasha

My bad. Just woke up. heh

But really, it reminds me of anime sometimes lazily having multiple characters on the same screen. Like the Two Chies in Persona 4 anime.

    • Arcana Drill

Glitch? pfffft it was only a clever teaser for the plot of the next Saga when the Xenahort one ends, be prepared for even more plot twists!

      • Anime10121

No more Sora/Xehanort clones…time for princess of heart clones!

        • Rayhan PromisedGallery

well, we already have Namine and Xion as Kairi’s clones with Sora’s body contact as medium. Time for real clone of Kairi!!!

  • Pedro Furtado

Man, I could not care less about those graphics. Just being able to play the Final Mixes with Japanese text + jap dub + trophies is all I need. Must say if they update the OST a bit I’ll be pleased though. Like to please my ears more than my eyes, I guess.

    • Anime10121

Wait, if you just want to play the game with Japanese text and dubs why not just import the PS2/PSP games :/

But to answer your second question, they confirmed that they were updating about 80 tracks from KH2 much in the same way they did KH1 in 1.5 :)

      • Pedro Furtado

Because the PS2 and PSP final mix games had English Dubs :) and also, gotta love those trophies.

And about the new songs, awesome <3

        • Anime10121

At least KH2FM let you watch the cutscenes in Japanese though (cant really remember if BBSFM let you do the same).

But yeah, more orchestrated music’s awesome :D

          • Pedro Furtado

Oh, that’s true, I forgot about that feature. Back then I wasn’t studying Japanese though so I didn’t really care, I only watched some of the new cutscene with Japanese voice and dropped it

    • Zack

I’ll be doing the same! But only because the JP version is coming out sooner. It’s pretty obvious that the English dub for this series is infinitely better than the JP dub. When the English ver. comes out, I’ll be on it faster than a deprived man in a brothel! Uhh… bad analogy… ignore my last sentence…

  • new_tradition

Never mind PS2 to PS3, just the graphical differences between KH1 and KH2 were massive IMO. It seems that ReMIX is reflecting that quite nicely ^^

Pretty stoked all around. Wonder if they’ll do another LE version? Either way, day 1 <3

  • Quan Chi

I still see massive jaggies and unnessessary changes that, if you are a collector, you will still have to keep the original versions….
For what reasons did they have to change graphics/colors? This makes me want to not get this because it could end up being like Ocarina of Time. Censored.

    • Anime10121

Its a trait of the Final Mixes (the emblem heartless all changed colors in each final mix), nothing more, nothing less. Nothing is censored in the game…

      • Quan Chi

Dang, you’re right (just watched a ps2 version video). Did they do this to any of the multiple versioned FFs for PS2?

        • Anime10121

Not as far as I know, the FF International versions pretty much just remained the same with added content.

And I just read your edit, the music is not different either, Halloween Town’s music is still in the game, as are its battle theme, they just added new music in for the Christmas town part! Its really good songs that fit the mood of town more than the spooky Halloween music did.

      • Wappuli

There actually could end up being some censorship in 2.5 HD remix. They did censor Selphie’s panties in the 1.5 HD remix you know.

        • Anime10121

True that, I forgot all about that… Guess we won’t be seeing Kairi’s pantsu in KH2 FM in TWTNW :P

  • Dang, that’s pretty cool. It’s sorta amazing to see how different they looked.

I mean, the PS2 version definitely didn’t look terrible, but the PS3 one is definitely a lot sharper, more vibrant, more detailed. And those Final Mix additions! I love Sora’s dumb Christmas outfit on top of his creepy outfit.

    • SerendipityX

lol The Santa hat is not even on his head, its glued to the left spike of his hair.

  • Kornelious

I’m not sure about that “Interactive” video but the graphics look great! Though that’s mostly a bonus for I just really want to play all the Final Mix content in English :D

    Let’s hope there is a LE version……that’s NOT a case-artbook (shivers)

  • AuraGuyChris

Hmm, I saw two young Kairis behind Aqua…

    • Kurizu208

Yeah in the psp version it was a glitch. glad to see it gone in the HD footage.

  • Wait, are the costumes are different for Halloween Town now? :C

    • Laith Rem

Nope, only for Christmas Town. The Halloween town ones are the same.

  • chroma816

BBS is looking fantastic. I’m really excited to get back into that one.

  • Yan Zhao

So um…in the HD version Donald dont look like a Mummy?
