Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment Sequel Gets The Green Light

By Sato . July 8, 2014 . 6:35am

SAO Hollow Fragment - 01

It’s been a few months since Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment was released in Japan, and it seems to have done quite well, as a sequel is already in the plans according to this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine. [Thanks, Game Jouhou].

During an interview with producer Yosuke Futami and Sword Art Online author Reki Kawahara, Famitsu mentioned that Futami previously stated that if Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment sells more than the previous game, Sword Art Online: Infinity Moment on PSP, a sequel for the Vita game would be possible.

Now that Hollow Fragment has already outsold the PSP game, Futami revealed “I’m thinking about setting up plans for the sequel.”

More details on a new Sword Art Online game should be revealed in the near future. Meanwhile, Sword Art Online: Hollow Fragment will be released in North America on August 19, and Europe on August 20, 2014.

    Kawahara Reki, not Rei

    • natchu96

      Typos. Typos everywhere.

The last SAO article I read referred to Argo as a “he”, the bastards.

  • AlphaSixNine

Crossing my fingers it gets English Asian release as well, followed by US release. :3

  • Shadow Rebirth

let’s hope the sequel get the localization too.

  • David García Abril

I guess they’ll want to tie in with the second season, which started last weekend.

It will take place in GGO, then?

Who wants to play with purple lightsaber wielding girl-Kirito? lol

    • natchu96

      I say this a lot to people, he’s still a guy :(

And FPS doesn’t seem to really be a thing in Japan.

      • They’ll find out next episode.

    • AlphaSixNine

I’m hoping for a DLC like the ALO look of Kirito they did. :3

    • I think they’d choose ALO instead. If they choose GGO they would have to shove in all the girls again like they did with Leyfa and Sinon on SAO. Which actually…would be awesome. Girls with guns. But I think the safe bet is ALO.

  • Pls gimme original characters for SAO, it’s gonna be awesome… PLS

  • Aries_Atkasha

I hope that they at least will improve the graphics.

  • fyi1191

    Give us character creation!
No more forcing Kirito on us please!!

    • TheBlackRabbit

if it is a sequel to this game course it will have the mc.

      • fyi1191

They can let us woo Kirito instead.
        MC x GGO Kirito

        • TheBlackRabbit

lol they will prob just shove it down our throats.

    • David García Abril

You just want to get one of his waifus for yourself. lol

      • Land of Green Pasture

        right, and is that wrong?

        • The main sell point of this game is the waifus after all.

          • Land of Green Pasture

yep, and our cutie pie Hero…

    • AlphaSixNine

Personally, I like Kirito so I don’t really mind him shoved in my throat every game lol.

Also, I don’t like the idea of character creation in a game like SAO with already established set of characters/story/relationships. Not to mention a game that show your character in cut-scenes and still images. In fact, I never changed Kirito’s appearance in SAO:HF too much, I just changed his eye color to different ones because I like that. I even regret changing the name since everyone calls my character Kirito even though I put a different name. Sucks I can’t change it lol.

If it’s new with different sets of characters then it’ll work for me.

      • Land of Green Pasture

/changing the name since everyone calls my character Kirito even though I put a different name/

        that’s how to kill-a-joy

    • Leon Magnus

This! I want to play with female characters like Sinon.

  • TheBlackRabbit

    Things i wish will improve.
-combat needs to be more fluid.
    -graphical improvement.
    -Frame rate

    • Combat needs to be a lot better personally just make it that you have skills with SP and infinite attack without having to wait for gauges to fill

      • TheBlackRabbit

you see infinite attacking i feel would be a bit much. I think it can keep the gauge, but make the combat faster. Make the gauge fill over certain hits an combos. Sp would be nice. I need a sense of touch in the new game. like…..when you hit something you get a knock back, or a flinch. It’s there at times but it sometimes the enemy kinda just sits there an takes it without any motion whatsoever.

        • AlphaSixNine

SP? Doesn’t it have SP that you earn by using a weapon then allocate to a Skill Map to get various Sword Skills and other kinds of skills like buff/heal etc.? Or are you guys talking about something else?

        • natchu96

It becomes so fast it’s hilarious once you finally grind your way through the implement list enough to unlock full OSS capability.

Have good timing and enough SP to cover the bases, and nothing short of an area/floor boss will survive 3-4 sword skills executed in sequence without delays XD

On the flinch thing . . . that would actually FORCE them to take hits with no motion, as you automatically hit every few seconds, and you can easily spam sword skills at them then run backward popping SP potions if the flinching is limited to sword skills. Sword skills are powerful enough.

Also, what does “Sp would be nice” actually mean anyway? I feel like I’m failing to comprehend some important point here.

          • AlphaSixNine

Exactly this, I always find people complaining about stuff that the game actually offers and you only need to learn them. Or stuff that you actually can fix by leveling up, getting stronger weapons and skills. I always feel like people are judging the game without ever getting close to learning how to play properly.

If there’s one thing I was expecting people to complain about. It’s the massive frame rate drops on some battles and crowded area’s in Arc Sofia. Now that’s a legitimate complain. I hope they fix that in the next game.

          • TheBlackRabbit

lol really? i gotta see this. Full oss sounds funny as all hell. an you are right on the flinch thing….what i mean is i want to feel like my hits are…hitting? it’s hard for me to explain….ugh. im sorry. I think he means the conventional sp bar? im not sure anymore.

          • AlphaSixNine

            There’s an SP bar though.

          • natchu96

No, but really, the current gauges work great with their fill speed. The burst gauge is wholly irrelevant after a while, and the SP gauge allows for incredibly burst casting right out of the gate, but prevents you from spamming continuously throughout the fight. With how much damage skills do it’s fair.

Plus, SP gauge buffs and things like the Charge SP skill and Parry mean you can generally last for ages before stopping. The 50 SP from praising your partner helps too.

Full OSS does sound silly. I hear there’s a buff that boosts max SP by 300, so I imagine it’s technically possible to cast 6 skills in a row without stopping. With some regen set up you can go even further.

          • TheBlackRabbit

HOw long do you have to grind before becoming decently fast?

          • natchu96

            Hmm, OSS system . . .

First you have to successfully use 1000 sword skills in hollow missions (you can cheat here and spam the stun button from the menu instead of the hotkey and it counts for 2 skills for some reason). Then you have to find hollow missions with enemies level 100+ and use another 1000 skills (cheating still possible here).

After that you will be able to combo 2 skills in succession if you have good timing (and have enough SP to use both, duh). At this point you need to find level 110+ enemies during hollow missions and do 30 combos (can no longer cheat). Then you need to find level 120+ enemies and combo 100 more times.

That should allow you to combo to your heart’s content AFAIK. But you’ll run yourself dry of SP by the third skill. At this point, the second half of the OSS implements is SP cost reduction, which need to be cleared by 3-skill combo, 4-skill combo, and 5-skill combo 50 times each in order . . .

            Yeah . . .

On the other hand, 2 skills is already pretty silly and very affordable. People pull that off even with that katana that carries -300 SP penalty somehow . . .

IMO, I’ve always been a hit-and-run player in games, and at first this game felt a bit slow to fight in as well. Then I learned to ignore the attack button and just hotkey all of my skills to cast directly, and I’ve been chunking things at record time ever since. Then I got half of the OSS system unlocked, and everything died even quicker. Still trying to get some levels before unlocking full OSS, but most enemies don’t even survive the second skill in the chain. I can only imagine 4-skill chain casting. GG bosses.

      • AlphaSixNine

You can actually do infinite burst attacks if you time your button presses right. It’s called “Just Attack”, whenever you use burst attacks there’s a ring of light that gets smaller. If you press it when it comes close to Kirito the circle burst outward, which means your timing was right. The effect is your RISK value goes down significantly every time, meaning 0 RISK value then infinite burst attacks gauge. 0 RISK value pretty much means your burst gauge depletes very little, it almost feels infinite lol. When you use a Skill at the end of burst attacks your RISK value goes up MAX, just do the same again and it’ll go down to 0 pretty quickly.

It looks tough to do at first, but once you get used to it it’s quite easy to do on every weapon. A little practice would help. I’m quite used to it now, and I pretty much spam burst attacks infinitely like the burst gauge doesn’t exist most of the time lol

    • AlteisenX

I’d add framerate to the list, at least from what I’ve seen.

      • TheBlackRabbit

        done :D

    • David García Abril

      Have you played already?

    • Kami nii

-How about you can create your own MC?or better yet a new MC I mean I might sound a hater but I don’t want to play Kirito, They only gave us a little bit of customization but at the end of the day story wise its still Kirito. I mean come on I played the game and the only spoken words of the girls are KIRITO maybe I just got sick of it. I loved the game though :D

      • TheBlackRabbit

lol i feel you. Yea i guess that would be awesome. I would like that to be done, but i feel they would need to change the perspective of the story a bit…or we would have another white knight chronicles.

        • seyEliveD

          White knight chronicles *shivers*

          • TheBlackRabbit

      • I’d totally want that as well. But I’d like if its properly implemented. I’ve seen many games where a create a character is completely shoved into the game to the point it doesn’t exist.

This just reminded me….Xenoblade Wii U come out already!

  • They should take 10-15 years on development or increase the team’s number and just make SOA

    • natchu96

      I’ve been wondering about something.

50% of the people I see on the internet spell “SAO” incorrectly. What’s with that?

Nothing personal against you, it just baffles me.

      • John Smith

They probably typed too fast and pressed O before A

      • Kenny Loh

It doesn’t matter to me as long as we understand what he/she want to saying :D

      • Typo =P Should be SAO =P

    • I doubt Bandai Namco would ever do such a thing for a niche game as this one. Improving the online component would be the next great thing though. For the platform adhoc/online 4 player coop play would be the best.

  • Bandai Namco should choose Falcom to develop an RPG more appealing like the latest Ys for example. And it should have its own plot too, make it more intriguing. No more harem fillers and shit.

    • Renaldi Saputra

well, Banpresto should focus on SRW thing more

    • no option there, Falcom surely will not forgot how they butchered the Gagharv Series

  • Here’s hoping it’s for the Oculus Rift! Why else would they bother showing this off at Anime Expo?

    • natchu96

Well, for the general populace that might not have that thing . . . that would really suck.

      • Aha Disco Elf

That’s where merchandising comes to play. Collaborate with Oculus VR to come out with limited edition Amusphere shaped Oculus Rift.

        • Joseph Oprysko

Isn’t that the Sony Morpheus?? LOL

    • A little too early for its time but its a nice idea for the future. Doubt they will be the first to do so though.

  • Hexodious

First they want to release updates for the current one like an everyday’s MMO and MMORPG does and now they’re ready to make a sequel?

Hit your head against a wall and make a decision.

    • AlphaSixNine

Why can’t they do both? This one is just on planning stages anyway, might take a year or two before it actually gets announced. Between that time, they can do the update thing for HF.

      • Ragnawind

There is such a thing as time and resources. The same team doing things for more games at once would cause a loss in quality at a faster rate. If they released a new game, they would very likely have to stop all work on the other project, since it is the newer title in the series, like most companies do.

        • Are that much time and resources necessary for dlc? I thought they would dedicate a small team to dlcs while the rest of the people work on their next game.

          • Ragnawind

The patches are NOT DLC and they plan on releasing updates for HF like a regular MMO, which takes time and money, as well.

        • AlphaSixNine

I don’t think an update to an already finished game with an already finished game engine would need too much work and resources. A part of the team can be assigned for this while some will begin the early planning stages of the new game. Planning stages won’t need that much people and resources either. It’s not like they’re already going full development of the next game.

Early Planning stages would most likely include the author creating the setting, story and possibly new character for the new game + maybe some very early ideas on how the game will play. It will take time and probably go trough a lot of revisions before they can finalize and decide for full development. At this point, they will need full support of the game development team. I think this is still ways off and before that time comes, there’s plenty of room to do HF updates.

Besides, I don’t think we’ll get gigantic update like the one this July every time. I think that would be a bit too much. I think after this first update, the next ones will most likely be small additions like 1 or 2 new area with a new boss battle etc.

  • [S]unjay

I hate to be that guy but the gameplay looks somewhat choppy and the graphics look bad. It looks identical to the PSP game.

I hope that the sequel will use a new engine and possibly include the phantom bullet arc.

    • You are right. Because it is. This game is just a port of the psp game with some new stuff but aside of a higher resolution it’s pretty much the same game.

I hope as well that they use a new engine. Freedom Wars and God Eater 2 has shown us how great anime style games can look on the platform.

  • Ban The Jackass

The sequel should be based off GG Online.

  • Monterossa

I thought it’s the Steam greenlight dammit.

  • Schiller

The Sequel should let you create your own character.

  • Shirogane Takeru

    Alicization character cameos please

and maybe a Silver Crow secret boss :P (Versus arc)

    • Aha Disco Elf

      Need more bromance

      • darkbartz

The Kirito and Eugeo bromance would be fantastic. Even Kirito admits that he enjoys Eugeo’s company the best out of everyone’s he met.

        • Aha Disco Elf

          Well, SPOILER
dude basically goes vegetable after a certain event atop a certain tower, so you know he has an extraordinarily special place in dude’s heart/fluctlight

  • Aha Disco Elf

    Oculus rift+kinect port or bust

    • Daniel blue

This isn’t an immersive virtual reality game as presented in the anime; it’s just a single-player RPG pretending to be an MMO. It wouldn’t work that well with Oculus Rift.

  • tubers

    Wonder if it’s gonna be a PSV-PS3, PSV-PS4, PSV-PS3-PS4 -multiplat.

  • Kornelious

They said at one point that they hope they can make a SAO game for the PS4…..

Just because it’s on Vita doesn’t mean it won’t be on both…..Hopefully they can fully utilize the MMO setting in SAO, they did pretty good on Hollow Fragment letting you edit Kirito ans such so I’m hopefull :)

All in all this is good news to hear, and makes the wait for Hollow Fragment even harder! X(

    • After Final Fantasy and Akiba Strip getting PS4 ports wouldn’t be at all surprising.

  • Ksatmata

  • Wonder if it will be ALO this time around.

  • Alter

This with morpheus on ps4 ?
    ALO or GGO on Vita

    • Xerain

What about a Vita version of Google Cardbaord?

  • God

Why not make an actual MMO? With an actual account erasing death penalty, that doesn’t allow you to create a new account for 30 days, that way they can keep the player count at 10.000, and also if you don’t log in in 30 days your account becomes blocked and a slot frees up, to re-activate your account you would also need to wait for a slot to clear up, just like anyone who wants to create an account. It would be awesome.

    • proto13

God, for once I agree with you. :p

      • God

Divine punishment shall not fall upon you only beacuse i love Gir.

        • proto13

You are a most gracious God indeed. *bow*
