Luigi’s Death Stare Makes It Into A Mario Kart 8 Commercial In Japan

By Ishaan . July 21, 2014 . 11:00pm

The “Luigi’s Death Stare” animation has managed to work its way into a Mario Kart 8 commercial in Japan, alongside similar dramatic facial expressions of the other playable racers in the game.

One can’t be certain whether or not this was intentional, although it wouldn’t surprising in the least if it were, given Nintendo’s recent tendency of capitalizing on Internet-style humour in their Nintendo Directs and other presentations.

Mario Kart 8 was released in Japan on May 29th. The game has sold in the range of 530,000 copies in the region thus far.

This is quite possibly the best commercial ever. :O

  • Adrian Duran

in the end, is he driving another name-brand car?

    • Namuro

      Probably Bumblebee. :D

  • Alberto Maytorena

Hope they implement this facet of the character in future games.

  • Namuro

Luigi: “This ain’t no place for ya babies! Go home!!”

    • Zero_Destiny

      The man has his reasons.

      • Raymond

and that’s why baby peach is my main char for Mario kart. XD

      • Tom_Phoenix

..You know, for a second, I thought she was being literal.

      • Snorlaxation

        This comic is glorious.

Although as of Mario Kart Wii U, Luigi’s probably more likely to give as good as he gets (even to Baby Peach…)_

  • Raymond

You guys also need to see this video then. XD

    • idrawrobots

Now I want Stig DLC for Mario Kart.

  • Perpetually pissed off at the world now that his year is over, that bastard

  • Jettythesunfish

    It’s still his year.

  • Dat Koopa stare.

  • idrawrobots

    Is that the Trololo song?

    • HarakiriKami

      Danny Boy

  • The meme continues :P

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

    You Raise Me Up?

  • HarakiriKami

Ha they have Danny boy running in the background

  • Black Heaven

Dem camera angles. Why can’t I do those in my highlight reels? :(

Just when I do get them overtake highlights, the camera is all over the place and I can’t do my own Mii death stare.

That said, Karting is fun yet fiercely competitive online. 1 or 2 wrong moves and your lead can easily become the tail.

    • Christopher C

I thought it was the “7th place banana peel” thing that made it difficult/luck based?

      • Black Heaven

7th place banana peel? Please do tell.

Based on personal experience, the safest spot is 2nd place. 1st is susceptible to blue shell, anywhere in the middle better brace yourself for fights, and the tail is kinda hopeless. It’s kinda hard to catch up if your opponents are all veterans, and you’re the unfortunate one to get combo’ed by a bomb, and a couple of red shells. Just 3 seconds of sitting still is all it takes to get everyone pass through you. :'(

Unless there was a patch for MK8 shortly after release, the items are random. I was watching a livestream of it the night before it released in America and I saw things like stars in 3rd place, a single mushroom in 8th, stuff like that. Yeah, the total luck involved with the items pretty much killed any chances of me doing online racing.

          • Black Heaven

Oh yeah that’s what you meant.
Agreed, as said, the tail is pretty much hopeless.

At 11th I was really hoping for a Bullet Bill, but I rarely got one. Triple mushroom is a bit more likely though, but it only helps you close the gap a bit between you and the 10th.
Some said the item randomization is much more fair in MK8, but I can’t tell if this is true, as this is my first MK.

Despite all that odds though, I still play online. I’m currently at around 2019 pts.. By now I can tell that offline and online mode of MK has a heaven and hell difference with pumping your stress levels.

  • leingod

Is it wrong that I want some Mario Kart 8 DLC?

    • Scourge626

If the DLC is good, why not?

      • leingod

I’d be all for more remade SNES courses. The lonely one present in MK8 didn’t make it for me :O

    • DS23

Ever course ever from the MK series accessible in one game would be fantastic and now they finally have a machine with enough storage that that’s a possibility .

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

Luigi: My year isnt over………….IT JUST THE BEGINNING

  • SlickRoach

Luigi: “They told me my year was over, I told them their lives were over.”

  • Yan Zhao

This is the best part about the game lol, the death stares.

  • Kroz

    yessssss acknowledge it

  • “I just wanted you to know, that I, an L!”

  • Maia Kasoya

I was expecting to hear the Ridin’ song.
