New Fatal Frame Game Borrows Some Technology From Dead or Alive 5

Last week, Koei Tecmo revealed Fatal Frame: The Black Haired Shrine Maiden along with a fair bit of information on the Wii U game. Following its reveal, Team Ninja, the developers of the Ninja Gaiden and Dead or Alive series, shared an interesting tidbit on Twitter.

Team Ninja tweeted: “While you may have noticed after watching the video, the latest Fatal Frame game that was announced the other day uses some technology from Dead or Alive 5!”

Team Ninja, as you may know, are part of Koei Tecmo, the developer of Fatal Frame. We’re not exactly sure what kind of technology Fatal Frame: The Black Haired Shrine Maiden borrows from Dead or Alive 5, but some Japanese fans speculate that it seems likely that it has to do with the “wet” characters drenched in water that were shown in the trailer.

Fatal Frame: The Black Haired Shrine Maiden will be released on September 27, 2014 in Japan for Wii U.

I have a feeling it may have to also do with certain physics.

    • Tylor Boreas Makimoto

Rippling water never seemed their forte to me.

  • malek86

The hair looked a lot like that from DOA. Also, the blue-dressed girl seemed to take a certain kind of technology from DOA, if you know what I mean.

  • James Robert Thompson

As long as it’s not jiggle physics…

    • Altin

      jiggle jiggle

    • PreyMantis

Please, leave my jiggle physics alone!

      • James Robert Thompson

I love me some jiggle physics, but in not a horror game…

        • Aaron K Stone

Huge, sagging, rotting boobs sounds pretty horrific to me.

          • Land of Green Pasture

add some maggots to them and it will be complete sleepless night…. for me at least…

          • psycho_bandaid

I am experiencing weirdest boner ever right now.

          • Land of Green Pasture

there shall be no wood in the next morning for you, for the fear has consume it at night…

          • Aaron K Stone

And a very good night for other people I’ll bet.

          • Juan Andrés Valencia

I’d agree with you but then I remembered that guro exists.

        • psycho_bandaid

I agree actually especially since jiggle physics are usually kinda broken. I imagine some laughs at some really inappropriate times because the main characters’ boob decide they want to dance for no apparent reason.

        • Shippoyasha

Actually, the tech in DOA5 is pretty solid stuff. Even if they have jiggles, it can work with DOA5′s engine. They do stuff like wet clothing, skin tones and clothing physics really well in DOA5. All the ridiculing DOA is just played out and not even necessary.

          • Juan Andrés Valencia

The cloth simulation and wet clothing are probably going to be some of the only features from the engine it’ll feature. Unless the engine supports dynamic or global lighting which could work really well with the game.

    • Black Heaven

The Fatal Frame ladies’ “assets” are relatively more “humble” compared to DoA ladies. They are going for a more Nadeshiko look (traditional pure beauty of a Japanese woman) towards their main characters. By applying jiggle physics to that… they’ll be shaking away their ‘purity’.
In other words…. Fatal Frame girls’ boobs aren’t as big, so jiggling them might come off as weird and off character. *_*

Then again, I just hope they don’t go overboard. In each scary scene, you will take notice of the jiggles instead of being immersed in the horror. -_-

  • Raymond

man I want to play this one.

For now, im playing fatal frame 2 and 3.

  • Brion Valkerion

Going to assume its the dirt/sweat/water dripping tech from DoA5 when the camera pans in at the end of a match. I honestly think its a good effect that more games should employ. Not a fan of how most games make people look like characters out of a Michel Bay film where they are in an explosion but come out with perfect makeup lol.

But lets be real, we all know its the jiggle.

  • https://twitter.com/Ni_Go_Zero_Ichi Project 2501

Here I was all set to make a “wet T-shirt” joke and apparently it’s actually true.

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

Oh no. We’re gonna see kids with gigantic breasts that move individually!

Oh my god, I feel like punching this guy right in his mouth so hard that he’d lose all of his teeth in just one hit. What an annoying asshole.

      • $1392518

        That’s Jim sterling for you.

        • Stephen Mc Devitt

          I like Jim.

          • British_Otaku

I like him when he sticks to certain topics, but that’s everyone I guess.

I’ve adopted his views on piracy, consumer respect from the gaming industry, collector’s editions and DLC from the Jimquistion series and his Youtube channel… This? Yeah, this is one of the ones I don’t agree with. :p

          • HarakiriKami

But kirby is fucking awesome dude.

JIm’s reviews of The Last Story and Vanquish can fuck right off tho!! :D

          • British_Otaku

I loved Kirby (Canvas Curse/Power Paintbrush for life) before I found Jim’s round personage, but I suppose I share that with him as well

I haven’t seen his review of The Last Story, but I’m aware of how infamous he is for Vanquish. :P

        • Death Metal

Had never heard of him before. That was the only episode I saw and that was utterly horrible. What a douche.

          • Juan Andrés Valencia

He’s like the worst parts of Vice combined with Ann Coulter for gaming. That said though… he has made some great statements about Steam recently.

I can’t stand him most of the time though.

          • Death Metal

He may have good videos and may not be a complete sucker after all. This video was plainly a terrible example of him, though.

          • HarakiriKami

Why? Sterling is awesome. 24/7 thank god for kirby.

      • Stephen Mc Devitt

What do you know ya wee chungus.

      • HarakiriKami

        Lighten up dude.

    • Aaron K Stone

That culture explaination is a mighty fine line to walk.

    • Bob Slim

People like him in this video is the reason why we cant have anything sexy in games in NA. Man I hate people like him

    • Wrathful

Has there ever been breasts jiggle in Fatal Frame franchise where most of the main characters are female? I don’t think I have. Jimquisition in the earlier years were great when it first appeared in Escapist but devolved too much into “journalist” schlock.

    • Göran Isacson

The rage in this comment-thread. It’s like wonderful, exquisite wine.

  • Crimson_Cloud

Hmm… sex appeal played a nice role in Hounting Ground, and a lot of people didn’t mind it. Don’t know why it should bother anyone now… unless “they” fly across the screen in your face. Then it would be too distracting.

    • Fainaru Luna

Agreed, Haunting Ground had moderate fanservice and the Project Zero games as well. I think they are just bandwagon this because its’s a Team Ninja Game.

  • sunK1D

I’m pretty sure it’s running on the DOA 5 engine. That shop room when both women are talking gave it away.

  • David García Abril

Wait, does this mean they could port DOA5 to Wii U if they wanted?

    • Anime10121

A vast majority of PS360 games could be ported to Wii U if they wanted, but there’s literally no incentive for third parties to do so…

      • HarakiriKami

A vast majority of PS4 games /Xbox One games could run well on the Wii U if developers wanted to but again, no incentive. I think Witcher 3 would be the only one that would take a while to get optimized to run on the thing.

As for PS3/360 ports, they’re extremely cheap to do. It took Ubisoft less than a million $ to port Ass creeds to the Wii U. Third parties just dont want to divert their resources to just make a game for the Wii U.

Funny same reason why a lot of western third parties arent making handheld or midbudget games anymore. Just throwing shit at the wall on mobile to see what sticks and sending the rest into AAA development

        • Anime10121

Thats probably true as well since most PS4/Xbox One games are nothing but last gen ports. However when REAL next gen games start dropping (ex. Witcher 3, Kingdom Hearts 3, FFXV, Uncharted 4, Halo 5, etc etc), theres no way they’d run on Wii U with its limited 1gb of ram.

I dont know enough about development costs to be able to say it’d cost less than a million to port to Wii U, but its kinda understandable that they dont wanna throw money at Wii U ports considering they are unlikely to get much return on initial investment (since 3rd parties dont normally find much success on Nintendo console hardware to begin with).

Its also understandable that Western devs (not exclusive to third party either) dont make stuff for handhelds, as its a similar situation to the 3rd party/Wii U relationship. Handhelds dont sell well in the west, and thus their audiences are limited in comparison to what they can do on consoles, and therefore, by nature of responsible business, they ignore them.

tldr; Companies go where they feel they can find the most success.

          • TalesOfBS

1: “REAL next gen games” are still not a problem to get running on the Wii U. The thing is that they are x86, Wii U is PowerPC. It shares many similarities with the Xbox One architecture organization but not with the PS4, which is the one being used as base by most third party games. Xbox One get the ports.
We could go on the other direction and point out how the PS4/Xbox One would piss themselves trying to run games coded exclusively for the Wii U (especially from Nintendo first parties) and them ported to them, despite they having more ram and power.

2: Third party games used to sell pretty good (even the crappy ones) on Nintendo consoles before the trend of sub par ports, lack of content and 1 year later updated/remake versions for other consoles started to kill them.

3: Handhelds dont sell well in the west?
If the 150 millions DSs out there and the almost 3 years old 3DS still reaching 150k weekly and topping the charts almost every week, completely ignoring the newly launched “next gen consoles”, is doing bad then… you should go and tell Nintendo to retire from the handheld market right?

Western third parties are just boycotting the 3DS. They thought the Vita would crush the 3DS (like many were reporting even before launch) and they would finally have a handheld market without Nintendo’s iron hand to keep things in place, so they could profit on the yearly CoD/BF rehashes selling just because of graphics updates and also the DLC nightmare.
Well, too bad for them. Good thing that Nintendo can keep it alive and kicking even if they are alone, much like they are doing by boosting the Wii U now.

          • HarakiriKami

The architecture set is rather irrelevant since everyone uses middleware across systems.

The only middleware the Wii U doesnt have adapted for it is EA’s Frostbite 3.

What actually takes time is putting a team on the Wii U ( 5 to 10 people) and optimizing the game for the system. And if you dont have a team with experience on Nintendo stuff like this takes longer and costs more money. Thats why most of Wii U support is from Activision, Ubisoft, Japanese third parties not named Compile heart/from software ect

Most third parties overhire and throw people at as many titles as they can. So alot of them end up ignoring the Wii U

The power disparity also means making a Wii U port could potentially take more time than just up porting an xbox 360 game

          • TalesOfBS

I don’t agree with this part: Support from Ubisoft? Like what?
Killing Rayman sales with the broken exclusivity and complete delay of a finished game?
            Completely delaying/canning Watch Dogs?
Saying that ZombiU already had a sequel in development and then later enter in b*tching mode lying to everybody that their game developed in 6 months from assets of Killer Freaks From Outer Space wasn’t profitable? (lol)
Skipping Wii U on everything else?
Ubisoft is just another EA with their Origin. They thought they would have another platform were they could profit from cheap shooters and just dance, and when it didn’t happen they showed their real face and what their actual support is.

          • HarakiriKami

Ubisoft has definitely sabotaged themselves greatly with the Wii U.

Sending rayman to die against GTA ( followed by the sweet irony of the game selling best on the Wii U) wasting money on PS3/360 ports when they could have worked on PS4/ Xbox One ports to get in on their launch period), dooming the early days of the platform which embroiled it in a constant negative pr cycle while Lego City and Monster Hunter ate up all the sales in its stead.

          • HarakiriKami

KH3 can run on the Wii U. Luminous is adapted to the Wii U and they’re using DX11 feature sets from that.

Wii U would benefit from games that are designed for the PS4 and Xbox One because its architecture design is more similar to those ( albeit with a different instruction set, Power PC rather than X86) than the CPU intensive 360 and PS3. Its quite a bit stronger than those machines as well, but its weaker than the PS4.

        • TalesOfBS

It is all about money. Remember when the N64 and PS1 were sharing third party games?

          • HarakiriKami

Games werent multiplat back in the day. And if they were they were usually different games with the same name on them

          • TalesOfBS

There were a lot of third party PS1/N64 games (western) that ended up having only better res and some AA on the 64.

  • Yaro

Well I did notice the beautiful wet butt technology in that one trailer…

  • Black Heaven

Borrows technology from Dead or Alive 5

As with many Tecmo games, an asset of Fatal Frame has been its quite attractive characters. So DoA tech may have been used to magnify that aspect.

That said, if it’s not the wet dirty looks, it’s the jiggle physics!

    • Armageddon

      You know when I saw:

“Borrows technology from Dead or Alive 5″ I thought the jiggle physics too.

  • Kornelious

Well considering the beautiful characters and amazing butt physics, I can probably see what they borrowed :P

  • Vinny hawj

    Breast physics confirmed.

      Just what I was thinking,

  • Chow

    In this comment section: “hehehehehh”

  • Josh A. Stevens

It’ll be the jiggle physics and because it’s a horror game franchise, the jigglies will turn into monsters and eat you unless you take a photo of the boobies.

    Problem solved. Death by boobies.

  • Kai2591

Thanks Team Ninja! The characters are BEAUTIFUL :)

  • Monterossa

let’s see how long it’s gonna be an exclusive.

    • Fastchrone

as far as i know, fatal frame 4 still exclusive on wii
this is not a certainly capcom game

      • Monterossa

Warriors Orochi 3 Hyper and Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor’s Edge are not exclusive anymore.

        • HarakiriKami

only one of those is published by nintendo.

NIntendo funds fatal frame games. So it will always be exclusive.

    • TalesOfBS

Probably longer than your own life.

  • http://youtube.com/kuyamagix iKen

LoL, as soon as I heard Team Ninja was involved, boob physics pops in my mind, hahaha

On topic: Yeah, the game is going to be awesome! Esp. since it’s a WIIU exclusive :)

  • pekikuubik

People, Fatal Frame 4 already had jiggly life AND hometown. You’re a bit behind with these jokes. :D

DAT BUTT JIGGLE…. looks kinda weird, but hey, no complaints. Let’s get that DOA tech in Fatal Frame 5!

    • Black Heaven

Dem meat buns have a life of their own. Do girls’ behinds really move like that?
But meh, it’s team ninja! Masters of female human anatomy.

As Fatal Frame 4 wasn’t officially Englished, I never got to buy it. Are they offering the fan translation as patch?

  • Yan Zhao

    Boob physics, sold.

  • J_Joestar

    Wet t-shirt physics?
