Robin’s New Ability In Super Smash Bros. Lets You Recover Health

By Ishaan . July 21, 2014 . 10:31am

Fire Emblem: Awakening’s Robin will have the first ability in Super Smash Bros. that lets you dish out damage while recovering health, director Masahiro Sakurai says.

On Miiverse, Sakurai posted: “Robin’s Nosferatu is the first ability in the Smash Bros. series that recovers your damage as it gives damage to others. The attack becomes even stronger if you strike from behind!”

He added: “Robin doesn’t actually use this ability in the original game, but we added that element to make the character unique. Who knows—the ideas we use in this game may contribute to the original series.”

Super Smash Bros. will be released for Nintendo 3DS this October and on Wii U sometime this holiday season.

Well thank you, now the character I was more hyped to use its gonna be over abused online by people who don’t even play Fire Emblem

  • Kornelious

That….is freaking awesome! As if he didn’t have a unique enough move-set, I definitely know who my main will be now :D (Not like there was ever any doubt)

Also Nosferatu DID recover half of the health dealt to the enemy in the FEA…..But not as a tactician so that makes sense :P

October need to be here like…Yesterday! XD

  • otakumike

Nosferatu is a tome, correct? Why wouldn’t he be able to use it then? >_>

    • AzureRyuujin

Well, he could…. but not as a Tactician or Grandmaster, he’d need to change classes to one that can use Dark Magic.

      • XaviIniesta

Maybe Sakurai is referring to how it does more damage when it hits an opponent from behind? Because he said this right after: “Who knows—the ideas we use in this game may contribute to the original series”

        • JustThisOne

Ack. Directional damage would destroy me in FE if they added that, haha. Most of my tactics involve one tank getting super surrounded, while everyone else sneaks around. xD

    • AuraGuyChris

Unless this was a Morgan mothered with you-know-who and passed down that skill, no.

  • Dianatos

Now if only Aether did the same thing.

    • Afternoon Intergalactic

At least Ike did Aether in his game.

      • Benjamin Tyler

Can’t Robin use Nosferatu in a Dark Mage class?

        • Landale

Yes, but that would then rule out sword usage.

          • rezie

Dark Knight would work… if we imagine that Robin lost his horse. Perhaps due to one of Tharja’s hexes.

          • RagingTiger44

Dark Knight can’t use Shadow Tomes in FE:A. You’d think it’d be the case for a DARK Knight. But nope.

          • rezie

I usually have Robin paired with Tharja who has dark magic, so in my mind they were synonymous, my bad. :)

  • British_Otaku

A nice nod to how most folks you come across in Fire Emblem with the abillity to use Nosferasu are despicable pricks who would hit you from behind and afar in a turn based SRPG.

    • rezie

I don’t know about that… I personally was more irked at Mire even though the enemy missed most of the time. Nosferatu + Vengeance was awesome for Morgan/etc. when triggered.

  • Bio_liquid

Original game? Is he talking about Awakening? If so it’s up to the player if he used Nosferatu or not. Unless he means in canon….

    • mojack411

Well you could only use it if you switched out of the Tactician/Grandmaster class which Robin is in Smash so I guess that’s what he meant.

    • Scotty Wray

I think they meant Robin’s ability for Nosferatu to deal more damage from behind, since generally attacking from behind only increases your hit and crit percentages.
Unless they really are planning for Tacticians and Grand Masters to have the ability to use dark tomes, in which case SWEEEEET~

      • J_Joestar

or just release a DLC item to teach shadowgift

      • Scotty Wray

That would work too, I wish there had been more dlc skill scrolls in general.

  • fairysun

    This should be Lord abilities(Aether).
Robin can only heal him/herself from Nosferatu tome.

OK, I let my Fire Emblem Nerd out of here.

    • Agumon_Ql_Sabio

Well, he is using a Nosferatu tome right there (it could also be Aversa’s Night, but it states right there it is a Nosferatu :P)

Yeah, and we need Lucina to use Sol or Aether… or Luna or something that isn’t a copy of Marth’s moveset

  • Land of Green Pasture

    guys.. we have a tournament-banned-tier candidate here…

    • rezie

If new abilities that we don’t understand and hardly have any information on is all that is required, then all of the new characters might as well be banned, no?

      • Land of Green Pasture

hahahahahah indeed, how well this guy gonna do is actually still pretty vague, but, pretty much Robin’s got some solid abilities that have been announced imo

        • rezie

Yeah the lightning spells seem pretty positive so far. But the same happened with Little Mac’s OHKO attack – flashy and seemingly powerful at first, but we heard negative comments from players that tried him out. Who knows, maybe the restock time for Robin’s tomes will be short and he’ll be a lightning, vampiric, Meta Knight.. :)

          • Linhua

            … okay, I think it’s time I asked now.

… exactly WHAT were people saying about Little Mac’s One-Hitter-Quitter…?

          • rezie

I wasn’t too clear on the comment originally, and note that it was also based on third-party impressions from both Nintendo’s Smash tournament, as well as Smash Fest. Those that tried him out commented that the combination of the OHKO’s timer as well as his relatively poor air game and recovery can make it rather difficult (beyond than just offsetting that the attack is OHKO) for him to land it. Once the game is released to the general public though, there might be more viable combos that can help with that.

          • Linhua

… I think for me to better understand this explanation, I would have to see how it fails.

… but thank you for trying… lol.

          • rezie

Definitely, it’ll be much better to experience in person. The gist of it is that the character as a whole has limited options in terms of chasing down opponents, as well as to perform well in FFA. Again, this is all pre-release opinions, so it might change once more people can test out the character.

    • If they didn’t ban meta knight they’re not banning this wonky looking character.

      • Agumon_Ql_Sabio

wonky? you people need to pick Fire Emblem Awakening urgently

  • Hyero

I’m pretty sure Robin can use Nosferatu in FE:A. If it’s anything like the game it will give you half of the damage value’s worth of HP.

    • 하세요

As others have said, I think they mean outside of his/her initial class. You’d have to change to gain access to Dark Tomes.

    • Lilburrito

Not outside of his Tactician ( Default ) class, from which his fighting style is based off of. If all classes factored in then Robin would be the most diverse Smash Character in the history of…ever!

      • 하세요

Imagine if Mega Man had access to every single one of his powers spanned across all 10 of his original games.

        • Lilburrito

          Mother of god… O___O

          • Linhua

… that face was to be expected .-.

  • Go2hell66

    Ofcourse he can use nosferatu…

    • Agumon_Ql_Sabio

Not while tactician, he has to be sorcerer for that

  • Altumn

If its anything like Lightning in Dissidia 012, then its nothing too overpowered.

    • The Watcher

I thought it just build damage numbers not health?

      • Invisbin

        It did, but it sucked.

  • anthony apduhan

    Roy with Hector’s Axe?

  • Nobody

    Nosferatu, is that you?

  • Robin reminds me of Ragna from BlazBlue. That Nosferatu move looks pretty flashy though :)

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

project M….did …nvm that is kool
