One Piece: Grand Battle! X Game Announced For Nintendo 3DS

By Sato . July 23, 2014 . 10:30pm

OP2 It looks like Bandai Namco are working on the latest of the One Piece action series with One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X for Nintendo 3DS, according to this week’s issue of Jump magazine. [Thanks, Arlongpark.]

One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X boasts over 85 different characters from the One Piece universe, ranging from our favorite Mugiwara crew, to the recent characters seen in the Dressrosa Arc like Doflamingo and Admiral Fujitora. It even looks like the Red-Haired Shanks will also be getting a piece of the action.

In this Nintendo 3DS action title, you set up groups of two main characters alongside two support characters to make your own dream team who’ll be participating in big pirate alliance battles.

One Piece: Super Grand Battle! X will be released this Winter in Japan for Nintendo 3DS.

  • Darkwing7

in the pic donflamingo looks like his head is floating o-o

  • DaiRaiOh

I do hope they attempt to make this one somewhat balanced and the AI not the king of kiting like in Grand Battle/Adventure

  • Era Angelus

Some time back someone mention wanting a fighting game with all the One Piece characters to date… their wish has been granted!

    • Princess_Eevee9

Was in the World Red article I remember. I supported that wish when they announced they were thinking about it!

  • Makoto Yuki

Ah yes, I remembered the good old days playing Grand Battle on Ps2 =v= Looking forward to this.

They’ve been on a tear of releasing games in the West, I hope it doesn’t let up because I need this in my life.

  • Franky Oda Abraham

So… Was stoked when I read GRAND BATTLE. And saw the chibi art… But then I saw the screens.. It’s 2d. That’s cool and all but I was all excited thinking my 3d Power Stone like fighting game was returning… :-

  • Yue D Andre

Awesome, it’s been a while after the last OP fighting games. Doesn’t like Romance Dawn and Unlimited Red that much (although i finish it).
I just hope this game has that many contents like OP Gigant Battle 2 and since it’s on 3DS it SHOULD be got more contents.
Since the last 2 OP games got translated, i have a high hope this one got it.

from : The Big FANS of One Piece, lol~

    • Lifestreamer

From the pic it’s 2d like Gigant Battle, even the sakura trees arena is almost a rip off, so I’m expecting good things from this project.

      • British_Otaku

Yeah, I hope the skimping out on the creation of 100% original stuff (seriously, that Sakura Trees stage still has young Whitebeard in it – perhaps they traced over the sprites) means that this game has more content.

I definitely glad that we will be able to revisit those locations.

        • Lifestreamer

And Roger is behind Issho too lol.

Since Gigant Battle 2 gave us Shiki and the awesome Merville stage, I would love to see Z and the vulcan stage with the dyna stones somehow, actually I was hoping for his appearance in unlimited world red as a secret boss.

    • British_Otaku

I really hope it tries to match Gigant Battle 2 as well but just because it is on the 3DS, that doesn’t guarantee more content, at the very least 3D models make it easier to make alternative costumes and animations but if Bandai Namco whisper terrible thoughts into Ganbarion’s ears like for Unlimited World RED, we may end with a smaller project than Gigant Battle 1 somehow… >_>

  • Kyosuke Yoshino

Nice, I quite enjoyed the Grand Battle games on PS1.

  • fyi1191

    Nice hairstyle there, Franky.

    • Princess_Eevee9

…I need this as a plushie now!

    • Lifestreamer

Reminds me of Obelix, except suuuuuper gayer.

      • Hagaren

Am I the only one who wishes he kept the Johnny Bravo/ Ace Ventura style? He technically still has it but I really disliked the Crab Pincher style from Punk Hazard and especially the current Pigtails…. The shaved head style also doesn’t suit him.

        • Lifestreamer

The Ace Ventura is still the official, I surely disliked the obelix one at first, the crab pincher was mildly amusing, and I’m kind of neutral towards the shaved one, but sometimes we have nice ones like his current cannon hair, at least I like it.

          • Hagaren

Yeah, the canon one is great!

          • British_Otaku

If they go for making a lot of costumes, Franky better have this represented somehow even if it is just how it looks for an action for 2 second start up attack.

          • LittleMofreaky

it didn’t actually shoot anything though, and Doflamingo’s henchmen we’re dissappointed about that

        • British_Otaku

He can change hair style at the touch of his nose now and games have been acknowledging this.

Gigant Battle 2: He changes hairstyle for specific moves, Coup de Vent has his “Super” style from the old days.

Unlimited World RED: He touches his nose if you leave him still for a while changing between three hair styles including the classic “Super” style as one of the options.

As this game uses 3D models, having alternative costumes which aren’t recolours (and selling them for the mighty yen) should be much easier.

          • Hagaren

Nice, didn’t know that about the games.

  • roydgriffin

Please come to europe, please come to europe, please come to europe…

    • MaidKillua

As far as I can remember Namco are usually good to us with anime games since series like One Piece and Naruto have always been quite well received in Europe. If it comes to America we’ll get it

    • British_Otaku

We only missed Gigant Battle 2 recently and that was probably due to the DS being on the way out as there were Dragon Ball and Ace Attorney games not localised around the same time (even if Devil Survivor 2 got localised in Europe in 2013). We have never suffered a digital only release for a One Piece game and even got limited editions for Pirate Warriors.

We are definitely getting this, but I’ll be importing this as usual.

  • Princess_Eevee9

Please get localized. Please get localized
Waaaaait… please allowing dual languages please allow dual languages!

    • MrJechgo

FUNimation has the rights for One Piece now, so English isn’t much of a bother anymore XD

      • Princess_Eevee9

Guess that’s alright. Not sold on their Voice Acting for it.

  • MrJechgo

    Oooooooooooooh nice ^_^

    • lackofstyle

heh seems we got a bit of a one piece fan here

    • Lifestreamer

Fujitora with Maynart and hopefully Sabo with Koala (and Hack maybe), also, no WANZE!!?? No buy!

      Nice list right there.

  • triablos

Wow, hope this gets localised, I don’t care dubbed or not! I’ll take what I can get.

  • fairysun

Woah, any info about the genre?
    RPG?! Crawler? Fighting?

    • The Grand Battle series are a series of fighting games similar to Power Stone.

      • Pombar

But this title takes after the Gigant Battle games, despite the name. It’s a 2D Smash Bros/Jump Ultimate Stars-ish fighter.

  • Lifestreamer

This is the result of Grand Battle and Gigant Battle having a child, too awesome! Unfortunately I think a lot of these 85 chars will be support only.

  • raymk

FInally the fighting games makes its way to the 3DS :). We’re sure to get this game somewhere along the line, maybe in a year.

  • Guest

Was sort of hoping for a new Gigant Battle since I never got to play it and it looks a lot like Jump Ultimate Stars but with just One Piece, but this sounds pretty cool too

    • British_Otaku

It looks like Gigant Battle quite a lot actually and I highly recommend importing Gigant Battle 2 now in case this never gets localised (unlikely).

  • Kaitou21

Didn’t think Grand Battle would make a reappearance, would really like to play this, especially with a roster of 85 characters.

    • British_Otaku

Make no mistake, this seems to be a Gigant Battle game like the below video shows:

No idea who at Bandai Namco is giving the go ahead to use misleading titles but even with just a scan it looks more like than than the older Grand Battle games.

      • Pdugna

watched this and thought it was more current lol…..confused me why Law and Kid where in their old outfits….that scene with Usopp shooting Akainu in the head was funny though.

        • British_Otaku

The game was released in 2011, the timeskip had barely started so the first updates for the game were actually focused on the Grey Terminal in Luffy’s childhood and it was the first place where we heard the We Go! intro as well but it ended up having Hody Jones, Caribou, .Vander Decken playable and the most Fishman Island content of any One Piece game to date but Red Hawk hadn’t appeared in the manga yet. >_>

I highly recommend the title if you can import it.

      • Darrell Seven

Just from watching Sanji’s special you can tell this is One Piece Ultimate Stars. So yes, I am definitely on board for this and Super Grand Battle.

        • Pombar

All the Gigant Battle games were developed by the team behind, and based on the same system as, Jump Super Stars + Jump Ultimate Stars. There’s a whole series of OP “Stars” games! The JUS team hasn’t been making nothing in the years since that game came out.

  • ApZzZ

I remember playing a grand battle game on the ps2 :)

  • Göran Isacson

As someone who is a newcomer to the One Piece games, what is the difference between “Grand Battle” and “Gigant Battle” that some people are talking about here? Different developers, or different playstyles?

    • The Grand Battle games are a 3D 1 on 1 fighter and the GigantBattle games are a 2D 4 player fighter with assist

    • Pombar

It’s confusing – previously, Grand Battle was a console 3D fighting series, while Gigant Battle was a portable 2D Smash Bros-ish (made by the team that made Jump Ultimate Stars) fighter. However, this Grand Battle for 3DS is a Gigant Battle game in all but name. Same developer, same style of gameplay, same movesets – but now with 3D models instead of sprites.

  • LittleMofreaky

bring this to NA please and I’ll buy the fuck out of it
