Dragon Quest IV For Smartphones Coming To The West

By Ishaan . July 30, 2014 . 7:16am

Square Enix announced their Gamescom line-up this morning, and mentioned in their press release that the smartphone version of Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen will be released in the West.

Dragon Quest IV: Chapters of the Chosen on smartphones is a port of the Nintendo DS remake of the game. It includes the extra content from that version, such as the bonus story chapter. It also has a quick save feature and five combat speed options.

The game will be released for both iOS and Android devices.

Other games that Square is taking to Gamescom include: Kingdom Hearts HD 1.5 Remix, Lara Croft and the Temple of Osiris, Theatrhythm Final Fantasy: Curtain Call, Dragon Quest VIII for smartphones, Nosgoth and Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn.

  • Good news! Decent RPGs on Android are hard enough to come by and I’ve always preferred the idea of playing phone games in a vertical orientation.

    • kay

Hey could you recommend a few? I’m thinking of retiring my vita and I have an android phone.
      Already played chaos rings.

  • Vanadise

    I never asked for this.

But if I buy it enough times, can I get DQ7 on 3DS?

  • Fronkhead

I’m actually looking forward to this. The one handed controls in Dragon Quest VIII were a phenomenal way to play the game casually, and they translate even better to these DS ports.

  • Michael Kelehan

This might be my favorite DQ. And it’s perhaps the best way to get someone who isn’t into the series to give it a try, because it’s the most Final Fantasy-like entry, I think. Premade characters, gain abilities through leveling up, moving through a story in a fairly linear fashion. I just hope people won’t be shocked by the inevitable $16 pricetag (on a game worth 3 times that much).

    • SMT

I’ve been meaning to get into DQ for a while… I tried VIII for the PS2 a long time ago, don’t quite remember why I stopped, but I stopped before getting the 4th character…

So I’m happy to learn that this is considered a good entry point.

It’s also quite wonderful and refreshing to see positive comments here about a mobile game!

      • Afternoon Intergalactic

You should give VIII another chance! It truly is a gem of a game.

    • triablos

I loved it till when you had to find the zenithian treasure. Felt like they were scattered all over and I had to use a walkthrough to know where to go next a few times. Not as bad as DQ1’s ‘important key item found randomly on the floor’ though.

      • Michael Kelehan

Were you playing the DS version, or an earlier version? I don’t remember having trouble with finding them (I know for a fact I didn’t use a walkthrough), so there must have been something in the game pointing me towards them. Perhaps NPCs were added in the DS version that made it more clear?

        • triablos

I played the DS version, but I think the parts that made me lost was the fact that they were all on different islands. I tend to get lost easily unless there is a clear path or NPC says “head north and you’ll find a big cave” etc.

I also tend to not explore everywhere because, from my experience in other games, it leads to running into strong monsters that can wipe you out

          • Michael Kelehan

Ah, well then, I can see how it would be frustrating. I love exploring everywhere. When the game tells me where to go, I make it a point to go there last. And if I get wiped out… I just reload my save, and make myself a note to try that place again later.

  • Guest

They should have mixed up IV and VII somewhere in the process.
    *wink wink*

  • Will this include party chat?
I wish I could support it, but I have no smartphone at the moment. If only they would localize a certain other DQ release too…

    • samsneeze

Whether or not this has party chat will make or break my purchase for this. It being excluded from the DS remake did nothing but hurt that game. It’s inclusion in Dragon Quest V just goes to show how big of a difference it can make.

      • Agreed. The lack of party chat in the DS one was nothing but pure laziness.

  • Göran Isacson

Huh, 1.5? You sure they didn’t mean 2.5, can’t really see the reason to hype the older game here…

    • James Robert Thompson

They don’t seem to be bringing any new games other than this, just stuff that’s already been released, so it’s not surprising. It could be that this will get a release prior to the event to, or they’re really going to be making this a Dragon Quest themed event… which for SE isn’t massively likely, but I would love to see it!

      • Göran Isacson

Ha, I admit that WOULD be cool. So few seem to be aware that Dragon Quest even exist here in Europe, so maybe a bit of PR for it could lead to interesting things.

  • James Enk

DQVII for the 3DS coming the west when?

  • Fairlee

…just do Dragon Quest VII 3DS already T^T

  • Zero_Destiny

Honestly I kinda really just want Dragon Quest 1, 2, and 3 on smartphones. Seeing how we haven’t gotten around to getting any versions of them since in the past 13 years, something would be nice. Smartphones, Nintendo eShop, steam, anything ………

(And DQIII is so damn good >__________<

Sure would like to see the first three games again, though, and not just the DS remakes we already got ……….

  • I actually didn’t get around to beating this one. I might have to get it, provided it doesn’t cost twenty bucks.

  • Learii

Dragon Quest IV hmm will they never make another Dragon Quest Monsters?

    • Metabble

There are two in 3ds…. in Japan

      • Learii

and never come to the west I guess =(

        • Metabble

          …. yes :(

Btw, they are the remakes of the 2 first DQM (or Dragon Warrior Monsters)

          • Learii

I got that one on my GBA but I never beat it

  • Randy Marsh

YES, and I was beginning to think they wouldn’t bring any of the mobile DQ ports aside from DQVIII, thank you SE.

  • Roger

So they skipped DQI? Cause it’s out for months now, way earlier than IV.

I wonder if they’ll release II and III without releasing the first one, well, first.
Since they work as a trilogy.

Anyway, more chances for either Luminaries of the Legendary Line or Seeds of Salvation to be the subtitle for DQVII, if that’s the case. :D

    • Zeether

Yeah, except it’ll be the subtitle for the stupid phone port, in portrait mode (UGLY) and we won’t get VII3D. No thanks.

      • triablos

I don’t get why you don’t like portrait mode. Its essentially a DS screen without the plastic in the middle

    • Metabble

      I think that
Luminaries of the Legendary Line = DQ2 mobile
Seeds of Salvation = DQ3 mobile

And DQ1 is delayed because they need to do a proper translation to match the “Dragon Quest” era instead of the “Dragon Warrior” era.

(note: all this is what i think, just especlation)

  • Will Jay

…Hey, maybe we’ll get Party Chat this time!

    • GH56734

      Keep dreaming.

  • Blesmi

    Meanwhile DQVII…

  • Dystopiq

Why Square? Why? Why can’t you just bring DQ VII 3DS over?

  • iamtehultimatepwnage .

i would give sooo much for the dragon quest monsters remake to be released in the west….. :(

  • Aspenharls

Ehh….this is unfortunate. Judging from Square’s past, it takes forever for an Android release. I just traded in my Iphone for an Android D:

    • triablos

DQ8 came out same day for both, iirc.

    • Randy Marsh

They’ve been trying to do closer releases for both platforms, but be prepared to deal with a lot of bugs when it comes to the android versions.

      • darke

        Wasn’t this a Unity3d game though?

Honestly it’s pretty easy to port that with minimal ‘bugs’; most of the issue is dealing with random performance of the hardware compared to iOS, different powered cores, different amounts of memory, and so forth.

  • Woo hoo!!!! When are we getting DQ I and II? And I hope this means we’ll get III and whatever else Japan gets.

It looks to me like the graphics are enhanced from the ugly DS version, which would be nice. That was some pretty gross, PS1-era 3D on there. One of the best RPGs of all time, though.

    • triablos

I thought the games looked pretty good. DW7 on the PS1 looked much worse than the DS titles despite both having basically the same style.

The graphics on the screenshot look on par with the DS version’s.

  • triablos

I literally just beat this game last month on DS.

  • AJ

Of all the games I have ever played, I think I hate the final boss of THIS game the most.

  • Zeether

Nice job throwing DQ fans under the bus again with this, Square Enix. Is VII going to be mobile phone only here too? I’m boycotting them for good if they keep pulling this garbage. I’m surprised people even WANT this, because buying it won’t give us the 3DS games or DQX but more stupid churned out mobile crap with awful portrait resolution and terrible scaling. If they troll us this way on DQVII there’s gonna be blood.

  • awat

i thought i read “Dragon Quest VII for the 3DS is coming to the west”…….. QAQ why you make us suffer so Square you dastards
