Meet The Three Girls Of Nippon Ichi’s Erotic Vita Game

By Sato . July 30, 2014 . 2:00pm

001

Nippon Ichi recently revealed their latest PlayStation Vita game, Great Edo Blacksmith, a title with erotic elements centering around the theme of money and beautiful women. 4Gamer shares a first look at the three girls in the game, and some dungeon-crawling.

Kiyohana:

004 005

Smiles and the sideways ponytail is Kiyohana’s trademark look. She’s calm, and always works hard to welcome customers, but she can be a klutz, and occasionally angers them at times. However, she has such a gentle personality that makes anyone love her, regardless.

Asaka:

006 007

Asaka likes to show extreme interest towards any customer who has money, and immediately butts in to any conversation about money. She might have her ups and downs when it comes to personality, but she’s still pretty popular thanks to her young looks.

Yugiri:

008 009

Yugiri is an overall attractive girl, but she’s a bit of a pessimist. It’s hard to tell whether she’s given up on life, or if she’s just negative, but she never seems to look like she’s having too much fun when speaking with customers.

Protagonist:

010

The protagonist is a swordsmith who only has one year left to live. While he is quite the talented blacksmith,  he’s not the best in social situations, and isn’t exactly too articulate when he talks.

011

The goal of Great Edo Blacksmith is to acquire money and fall in love with a girl. In order to do this, you’ll need to make some money, which will be done by exploring dungeons with hired allies.

012

There are monsters in the dungeon, and they drop all kinds of ore that can be used to make swords.

013 014

015 016

Once you’re done with the dungeon run, you’ll be prompted to pick which items to take back home, then use them to make accessories and swords, which can be sold for money. With money, you’ll then be able to hang out with the girls.

017

And by hanging out with the girls, it means visiting them for PlayStation Vita touch screen events. More details on these special events will be revealed in the near future, although the image above should give you some idea.

Great Edo Blacksmith is slated for release in Japan on November 27, 2014 for PlayStation Vita.

This might be the first game I buy for the Vita I’ve had for a year.

    • nonscpo

How is that possible, there have been so many good games this year on vita?

      • NintendoPSXTheSecond

To be fair, a lot of them JRPG’s LONG JRPG’s. I love JRPG’s but I dissuade myself against a lot of the Vita games because I know they’re long and by the time I’m halfway through with one, I’ll have bought about 4 other games.
Let’s also not forget the needless ports/enhanced version lol.

        • nonscpo

So your argument is that there’s too much content? Couldn’t a similar argument be made for 3DS games? Most portable games tend to have longevity when it comes to gameplay compares to their home console counterparts which are beaten in an afternoon and long forgoten by the end of the week.

  • Shippoyasha

Maybe the protagonist will result in some serious drama later in the story?

I really love the feudal era ecchi styling. And I absolutely adore moneymonger characters.

    • http://linkapics.tumblr.com/ Linka

Funnily, I agree with you in a sense there: I’m super digging Asaka’s design the most out of all three! I hope this game turns out to be interesting, but so far I’m liking the art style direction they’re going for it.

  • raeldor

How big are that guy’s hands!? That Vita looks tiny!

    • Milewide

      Those aren’t “hands”.

      • 07thCrow

        I’d say they’re yaoi hands, but……

      • 07thCrow

        I’d say they’re yaoi hands, but……

      You’re right, that’s a terrible photoshop job. :(

So we’re playing as Raguna huh?

Are you my long lost brother?!

      • Cheesy04

You’re probably a 2nd generation Cheesy, judging by your number.

  • Sentsuizan_93

    Interesting.
    Also, dibs on Kiyohana~

    • http://s932.photobucket.com/ usagi_san

That’s cool, son. I’ll just take Asaka and Yugiri.

      • Bob Slim

You cant have 2 ill take Yugiri shes hot

        • http://s932.photobucket.com/ usagi_san

No! You can have Asaka, I’m a pessimist. I want Yugiri more.

          • Bob Slim

Well we gonna have to fight lol I really like her

          • http://s932.photobucket.com/ usagi_san

          • ishyg

            So it’s all about money?

  • Kaien

I like the character design, but the gameplay screenshots look terribly cheap.

  • Manny Being Manny

Sounds like my type of game

    • Milewide

      My trouser resident agrees!

  • Mika Moreno

This looks cool. I like the concept! Hoping for a localization ~

  • Lutfi Ardiansyah

this remind me of kamidori alchemy so much

  • FlobotingIt

Yeah, nope! Not coming to the US!
(I actually don’t know but would be surprised and interested if it came stateside)

    • darke

Valhalla Knights 3 made it with it’s ‘sexy time’, I see no real difference at the moment, so there shouldn’t be a problem.

      • FlobotingIt

Okay, I stand corrected. From that point of view, I can understand what you’re saying. And, I suppose that the spectrum of what’s “socially allowed” in video games is expanding more and more.

        • darke

That’s the way it worked with violence anyway.

I remember there being serious fuss years back, to the point of seeing it referenced on TV, with original Soldier of Fortune video game. Complaints about blowing people’s limbs off and gore and the ‘pornification’ of death and… absolutely nothing nowadays where you’ve now got a destroying-individual-interal-organs-in-xray-mode game topping the charts in Britain where they classified the original SoF as ‘porn’: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Soldier_of_Fortune_(video_game)#Violence_controversy

          So yeah; times change. :)

  • Raymond

Klutzy, Gold digger, and half emo chick. Ah….just like real life girls. XD

  • Princess_Eevee9

This.. is rather disappointing. Seems this is the best Nippon Ichi can do these days. Sad.

    • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

There’s something to be said for their patterns and quality lately.

      • Shippoyasha

I don’t get it. They have always made small scale games like this though. Especially on handhelds. Plus, they are making a lot of other games. I expect them to ramp things up for Disgaea 5.

        • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

Oh, the scale isn’t the issue to me. It’s just the way they’re moving in most regards with their titles.

          But maybe they’re. . . well, I don’t know.

          • DesmaX

Well, games like these are a quick buck. The market for these is pretty predictable.

As long as this stuff don’t start to appear in their main games, I’m fine with it

          • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

Yeah, that’s true. Not a great buck, but certainly a quick one.

            And same here. vov

          • Kumiko Akimoto

            What’s the problem exactly?

          • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

I feel like between the technical quality of Battle Princess, the writing quality of Witch and the general shift to a partial reliance on pandering fanservice, there’s quite a bit lacking to NIS anymore. A part of me feels it started around Disgaea 4 though.

          • DesmaX

To be fair, Witch was trying to be edgy, not sexy.

          • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

Oh, I know. I was actually think of how hard they’re trying to be edgy (starting with Disgaea 4, then hitting a climax with Witch). But Criminal Girls is NIS, right? And then this title too, so~.

          • Shippoyasha

The Witch game actually is pretty unique because the main characters are so irreverent though. I kind of though it was refreshing. And they don’t really ‘pander’ anything by it. it’s just risque, dark comedy.

          • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

I didn’t say they pandered in it. I wasn’t including Witch in that part at all. x’D
And that’s fine. That can be a good quality. I like that in a character like Guts (Berserk) or Zero (Drakengard 3).

It’s just a matter of how edgy they try to be and how effective it is. To me, they basically look like DC comics.

          • Kumiko Akimoto

I don’t know about battle princess or witch, especially considering I’m not that excited to play witch but I don’t see why fanservice is a bad thing.

          • 07thCrow

Fanservice isn’t necessarily a bad thing, but depending on the amount present, it usually speaks on the overall… quality… of a game. Unless the game is actually meant to be ecchi/hentai/porn; then it can’t really be considered fanservice, since that’s the entire game.

          • 07thCrow

          • Kumiko Akimoto

I wouldn’t say that considering there are plenty of eroge that have varying degrees of sex content.
Anyways console games can’t be porn so it’s always fanservice in these cases.
I also don’t think heavy fanservice in a game like should speak for it’s quality, senran kagura is heavy fanservice wise but it’s actually got a pretty decent plot and it’s fun to play.

          • http://twitter.com/puchixseda puchinri

It’s not that fanservice itself is bad, but it’s that they’re moving away from what they usually do to make relatively cheap fanservice games for a quick buck in-between their regular projects.

When put beside the quality of their usual type of project lately, it doesn’t look good for them as far as quality and worth as a company.

  • poopstorm

I’m kind of tired of all these dungeon crawler first person RPGs for the Vita. This one looks like it’s at least above average in terms of that thankfully.

    • darke

What part of the ‘dungeon crawl’ is first-person? The dungeon crawling looks to be all 3rd person, like the image under the silhouette, you just swap to first person in combat.

      • poopstorm

Dungeon crawling and first person RPG are the two genres I meant

  • chroma816

    Yugiri = Kiyohana > Asaka.

    That’s my rating, anyway.

I do hope this comes over, though, and uncensored (considering it isn’t chibi and loli like Mugen Souls, maybe they won’t feel a need to censor it?). It’s marketed towards adults anyway, and so it could comfortably get an M rating here and still maybe sell well.

  • ThatGuy3190_7

We all know NISA is going to localize it sometime next year. This has NISA written all over it. With that out of the way, this is just like Rune Factory but ecchi.

    • when it comes it will be censored so yes

      • darke

Honestly it looks a lot like Valhalla Knight’s 3 style; so I can’t imagine it’d need to be censored. But who knows with NISA.

      • Guest

Don’t start that crap, please. 8U

  • Nu Blitz

an erotic recettear. i want it

  • http://people.ign.com/rob1610 rob1610

So after publishing Compile Heart’s Mugen Souls, Nippon Ichi decided to take a crack at erotic games themselves, eh? Well, if Disgaea and other titles are anything to go by, this will be EPIC. (Despite looking completely different.) Looking forward to more.

  • Veloze

another vita first-person dungeon crawler? christ

    • darke

No, this is a top-down for crawling as you can see in the picture under the silhouette.

First person is for combat. Works like a lot of ‘classic’ JRPGs where they played ‘top down’ view of the world map, then swapped to first, isometric, or ‘looking down from the side’ view for combat.

  • Kornelious

This is….interesting to say the least….It’s not too different from what you normally see in an NIS game, but it seems different at the same time……My question is, Why do you need money to see the girls (I’m pretty sure there is a word for that lol)

Either way, if Demon gaze and all those other Dungeon crawlers can make it, I’m sure that NISA will be all over this next year! :D

    • 07thCrow

I’m thinking the money is needed because the girls are actually oiran; high-class Japanese prostitutes. At least, that’s what I think, could be wrong, but it makes sense for the… content… of the game, and that ‘customers’ is mentioned a lot. I’d be surprised if this actually got brought over! XD

      • darke

If Valhalla Knights 3 can be published with this exact thing (money for ‘sexy time’) then this game can come across as well.

And after all the publicity of the Criminal Girls fiasco, it actually might sell better then VK3 as well. :P

        • 07thCrow

I don’t think VK3 had any actual ‘touching’ involved though, it was just mentioned in the story. With regards to Criminal Girls… yeeeeah… actually, I can definitely see this coming over now… Might even sell more than Criminal Girls would since the only token ‘loli’ character isn’t very loli-esque.

    • darke

Yeah, it’s the ‘classical’ version of the modern implementation of host/hostess clubs, where patrons visit them in order to chat with girls in exchange for expensive drinks. :P

  • Rakan

Is every niche Japanese RPG going to be a dungeon crawler? Geez.

    • Brandonmkii

      Hey, a guy can dream.

    • NyaBoy

Disgaea 4, Tales of Hearts R, Hyperdimension Neptunia

Rebirth, Oreshika, Sword Art Online, Freedom Wars…

    • ishyg

I was thinking the same thing.

  • Zak Ledward

When I read “Yugiri” I was like

“That’s not the Yugiri I REMEMBER!”

  • Looks nice and I hope there is time managment.

  • NeptuniasBeard

The amount of touch grope videogames have really shot up this gen

    • British_Otaku

None of them on the PS4 (touch pad), Wii U (touchscreen with camera and mic) and Xbox One (Kinect?) though.

Too many of them have to be imported.

      • Black Heaven

In terms of ‘touching’, PS4 touch pad is too unimmersive; and while Wii U can do it with the gamepad, its usual demographic may deny such game in their library (I could be wrong though). Finally we may have a good candidate in Kinect. Connecting the ‘game’ into your big screen, moving your hand to simulate ‘touches’, and possibly ‘further’ with bodily gestures…

Target audience by this game might give XB1 a try if they got those kinds of games. But I doubt those games will be greenlit in the first place. *_*

        • British_Otaku

I haven’t tried out the PS4 touch pad but the barrier between what you are touching and seeing is a thing yeah. I don’t think the usual Wii U demographic is a problem as much as proper marketing.

I can name 3DS, PS2, Vita or PS3 fanservice games which failed to reach an audience or managed to reach an audience.

I see more of a worry with the install base of the Xbox One as less people are attached to anime and manga to begin with, before we get into niche projects.

          • Black Heaven

To start, XB1 is trying to ease into Japan, with 3 VNs promised heading its way. If they continue the trend, XB1 could attract more anime / manga enthusiasts there, and in Japan it’s a LOT. It could even become the main console for dem touchy games there, along with Vita for handhelds.

Like Vita, these games are niche, so we won’t expect them going out of Japan. But Japan might be all what they need.

          • British_Otaku

Seems like a massive stretch to make that call before the Xbox One even releases just because it has three visual novels, more anime and manga enthusiants is definitely possible or even likely but it is far from having chance of overcoming the PS4/Wii U/Vita/3DS.

I suppose you are arguing that it could be the main home console, but even if the Wii U only has Death Match Love Comedy off the top of my head and I can’t name a thing for the PS4, but still. >_>

3DS and Vita both have a fine library of stuff.

          • Black Heaven

I agree that’s stretching it too far, and I’m aware of that.

Am not exactly arguing that XB1 will overthrow Wii U in Japan as the main home console. >_<
Was just saying that given the chance, eroge will 'mainly' be on XB1 in consoles and Vita on handhelds.

      • darke

Among other reasons below, there’s all of nothing in terms of otaku-game style games on the PS4, so that’s likely one of the reason there’s a distinct lack of rubbing. :)

    • Shippoyasha

      Technoloy at work.

Touch-pad and grope/touch stuff happened in the arcades when a lot of arcades in Japan started to have touchpads.

Naturally, with stuff like smart phones, you are going to have devs try to utilize it.

      • Armageddon

I’d be embarassed to play grope games at an arcade.>x<
Seriously, though putting it in arcades is kind of…well you know.

        • Shippoyasha

Well, some games don’t really require it. It’s just an odd side attraction in many arcades. Like to hear some cute or funny thing the characters say.

    • Xinen

The future of interactive entertainment is well and truly upon us.

    • ShadowDivz

Im just waiting for virtual helmet eroges.

  • Göran Isacson

Huh, it actually DOES seem to have a different look and style to it than Disgaea. Consider me positively surprised.

  • SakuStar Light

lol as usual the male character a silhouette. XD

  • 07thCrow

For a game emphasizing money, it doesn’t look like much money was put into this…

    • darke

Well, niche games have niche budget. :P

It’s pretty much as I expected anyway; chibi art to save costs in areas where chibi art works; the usual background + static-ish portrait art where it’s usually used.

Honestly provided the stuff they do include looks appropriate and good, I don’t mind so much with the corners they do cut.

      • 07thCrow

Very true, I just thought Nippon Ichi would have had a little more to put into it. Still sounds interesting though, but it makes me a little more hesitant. Could end up being surprised (if it gets translated)!

    • 古戸ヱリカ

To be fair, it’s a game about MAKING money, not spending it.

      • 07thCrow

“Once you’re done with the dungeon run, you’ll be prompted to pick which items to take back home, then use them to make accessories and swords, which can be sold for money. With money, you’ll then be able to hang out with the girls.”

It sounds like we’ll be making money to spend it on the girls.

  • OtakuSheppug

While the concept is done a million times, the art style looks really nice. It has the style of a beautiful painting. It interests me just for the art style alone.

  • Dkmariolink

It would be great, if, ya know, the GAMEPLAY was actually decent.

Fanservice is not enough to make a game, sorry.

    • darke

Well, sure, but wouldn’t you like to actually see gameplay before deciding that it’s bad?

I mean, all we’ve seen so far is pretty girls, and what the exploration/combat/inventory screens look like; and they look pretty similar to about 50% of the JRPGs out there, good and bad.

  • The Watcher

I swear to god if the protagonist is name Tetsuya…

  • Jeremy Lafferty

Looks good to me. If it gets a localization announcement, I’ll be getting it.

  • 無尽合体ブランタコブスキ

The main characters are always black in these games

    • 古戸ヱリカ

For once I’d like to see them appeal to the part of the audience that has eyes.

    • ShadowDivz

I know, i feel so accurately portrayed.
      Sarcasm.

  • WhyWai

those who disappointed had false expectation for a dating simulation..

  • http://epiclyamazing.wordpress.com/ AzureNova

    *Looks at girls*

    Gotta get that money. Lol

  • LustEnvy

    1st person battles? No thanks.

    • k.b.a.

better than first person dungeon navigation

      • darke

Nah; wizardry-clones are superior. At least you know the developers hate you with their random encounters and instant death and level drain, rather then the general suspicion you acquire from having to grind yet again in a classic JRPG. :)

      • LustEnvy

I agree, but I feel a disconnect when I can’t see my character’s struggles. It also feels like a cheap cop out, where they don’t have to animate character animations in battle. All the characters may as well be one character to me.

It was fine back in the early days of Earthbound, but now…I can’t get into this type of game.

        • 古戸ヱリカ

I feel the Mother series makes up for it by having incredibly bizarre descriptions of what the enemies are doing.

        • ShadowDivz

Pretty sure, i used these exact same words on a 1st person rpg article a long time ago.

But yeah, i have the same feeling. But SMT IV has a great story, so it’s my exception.

      • aizen310

        >:(
1st person dungeon navigation is more immersive.

  • k.b.a.

so titties touching or face touching?

  • http://nichegamer.net/ bf313

Love the character designs for the girls, would totally pick this up if it were localized.

  • http://youtube.com/kuyamagix iKen

Hmm, it’s almost like Harvest Moon. ‘cept it’s more dungeon crawler-like (dat money though) with 3 ladies to choose from :)

  • Learii

hmmm look good I like it I hope is come to the west

  • Alexander Aubert

not meant to be rude, but the girls…. is just…. the type i hate the most.

  • Gattai

Hmm looks interesting…seems like another game to be looking forward to xD

  • awat

to much fan service type of Jrpgs coming out, personally i find them quite boring.

    • http://k-hermann.deviantart.com/?rnrd airman4

you mean from NIS ? yeah

  • shuyai

Its quite sad MC only have one year left but spend his time working to pay for Hostess club…why?

    • Black Heaven

First and final chance to get laid?

What boy wouldn’t wish for that?

    • Christopher C

get laid, leave them with a kid and maybe some life insurance XD

  • leingod

Hmmm… can’t we go after the blacksmith’s helper?

  • Anueu

Only thing I can say looks nice about this are the artworks for the girls. Shame Vita is home to otaku pandering and low budget stuff like this.

  • foopy

I would buy and play this game. But my lack of shame is pretty well established by this point.

  • Aristides

I really like the battle screen art, the art style mixed with the interesting background perspective make it stand out a lot more than the average generic 2D FPV battle screens. I hope they didn’t just pick the best picture they had and the others look sub-par.

The GUI also looks really neat. It looks to me that they’re making the best out of their budget.

  • ShadowDivz

    Jesus, how…. basic.
I don’t mind ecchi in games.
But god, this is pretty…. lacking in all areas. At least criminal girls had some lolis and bondage(a weird mix and strange themes, but at least it stands out).

This is… simple exploration. Simple dating….simple crafting.
At least show the girls in revealing edo japan attire. And Kiyohana sounds generic as hell. Oh well, hopefully someone enjoy sit.

I know. It’s totally normal, just catering to simple, ‘classical’ Japanese tastes… and it would’t surprise me it sells better then Criminal Girls.

A little surprised they haven’t done something like this before; for an otaku-game this is almost mainstream. :P
