Super Smash Bros. Director Reveals New Mini-Game For 3DS Version

By Ishaan . August 1, 2014 . 12:30pm

Super Smash Bros. director Masahiro Sakurai revealed a new mini-game for the Nintendo 3DS version of the game last night. On Miiverse, Sakurai discussed a new feature called “Target Blast”.

Sakurai wrote: “What’s up with this bomb? This looks like the stadium for the Home-run Contest, but there’s no bat. Once you touch the bomb, it begins to count down. Give it enough damage and launch it at the right time…then once the bomb’s countdown hits zero…!!”

He continued: “…It goes BOOOOOM! Not only will the blast destroy targets, but it’ll also cause a chain reaction by using shattered walls and bomb blocks–all of which contributes to you getting a high score!!”

“This is a new activity that combines the concepts of Target Smash and the Home-run Contest—it’s called Target Blast! Your final score is the total you rack up over two rounds. Of course, your Target Blast scores contribute to your Global Smash Power, too.”

    Angry Birds?

    • ZnTxn

Angry Birdos. Not the same, please understand!

      • ThomasTruong

        I read that in a Sakurai/Iwata-esque voice.

      • T-X

You mean *Krush the Koopa Kastle. You, please understand.

  • CptPokerface

Now this is one Angry Birds clone I can get into.

    • PreyMantis

You mean Crush the Castle. Angry Birds didn’t started the genre.

      • CptPokerface

Good point. Angry Birds always comes to mind first, for whatever reason. Probably because it’s more widely known.

  • AuraGuyChris

Since I never played Angry Birds, I’ll happily welcome Angry Bombs.

  • triablos

    I want coin blaster!

  • King Dedede

    Castle Crusher?
Also, Sakurai! Where’s that Meta Knight? Your king demands answers!

    • k.b.a.

no reason for him to return imo.

      • King Dedede

I can’t explain how much stupidity there is in this repply.

        • Chersea

Is it dumb to have an opinion different from yours?

          • King Dedede

Im sorry, but seriously, that commenter is pretty misinformed, i mean, why should one of the three characters from one of Nintendo’s biggest franchises be cut? I mean, even through it’s just an opinion, i still think that post is stupid.

Can only imagine the announcer shouting “Break Everything!”

    • glenngunnerzero

The announcer always announces the game mode, in this case “Target Blast”, then says “GO!”
and once done “Complete” or “Failure”

  • Bobby Jennings

All these minigames make be believe that the 3DS version will be better than the Wii-U version.

    Nah, highly doubt that.

    • All the Mini-Games (outside of Smash Run, which is a bigger mode, not a Mini-Game) aren’t version exclusive. So, you can safely say that this will be in the Wii-U version, too.

      • Bobby Jennings

        I thought it was exclusive..

        • Why would something like this be exclusive? This is combining two modes that were a mainstay since Melee. This is their child.

          • SuperSailorV

Bobby probably thought you meant Smash Run was included within the list of non-exclusives you were mentioning. Your syntax was a little weird.

          • Yeah, has to be that.

          • Bobby Jennings

            Says for 3DS….

          • The screens are for the 3DS version. Doesn’t mean that they hint exclusivity.

          • Bobby Jennings

            i’m going off the title..

          • Not the first time Siliconera tends to forget that a game is multiplatform. Also, that’s due to the corner of each of the screenshots. The fact that the first two screens only say 3DS.

          • No one has forgotten anything. Until we see evidence of this being available on both platforms, it’s only confirmed for 3DS. Better safe than sorry.

          • Yeah, I know that to be the reason. It is always a safe bet to think like that.

          • Bobby Jennings

            I guess we’ll see then..

    • My assumption is that the Wii U version will have a proper Story/Adventure Mode while the 3DS version won’t, so Sakurai is giving the 3DS version more modes like Smash Run to compensate for the lack of an Adventure mode. The revealed Menu screen for 3DS makes me think the 3DS version doesn’t even have a Classic mode, either…

      • Bobby Jennings

Ahh, that makes sense! Thats what i thought.

      • Linhua

… but have you guys forgotten what he said about making stories in this one…?

… he stated something like: “Because people can simply watch all the cinematics on Youtube for free… I see little point in going through all the trouble to make it again.”

… pretty much, he told us not to expect anything like the Sub-Space Emissary.

        • No, I remember. Doesn’t mean we won’t get Classic mode, All-Star mode and maybe something like Melee’s Adventure mode in the Wii U version.

  • vileBrenman

    Seems like angry birds…

  • MrJechgo

Break the Targets + Homerun Contest = Angry Bird-like mini-game?

O…k… Nintendo has been smoking some great stuff lately XD

  • Kornelious

    ……….Why do I feel like I’ve seen this before….

  • Raltrios

    Angry Birds? In MY Smash?

    …I’m okay with this.

    • PreyMantis

      *Crush the Castle

    • Linhua

… I was just about to say that was what this was… lol.

  • “This is a new activity that combines the concepts of Target Smash and the Home-run Contest—it’s called Target Blast!”
Yeah, right. Say what you want, Sakurai, everyone knows it’s a Smash version of that castle crush genre that made Angry Birds famous.

  • Avojavo

Alright, I give. I planned on holding out for the Wii U version, but the 3DS version has become far too tempting to pass aside.

  • hazelnut1112

Crush the Castle, Angry Turds and Target Smash. Not bad in a way.
