Etrian Odyssey Untold II: The Knight of Fafnir, EOII Remake, Announced For 3DS

By Sato . August 5, 2014 . 2:26am

As many guessed from Atlus’ recent teaser site with a picture of a giant tree, a remake of the second DS game in the series, Etrian Odyssey Untold II: The Knight of Fafnir was announced for the Nintendo 3DS. Famitsu provides some more info and a look at some of the characters.

The first trailer for Etrian Odyssey Untold II: The Knight of Fafnir shows off a look at the game’s setting along with the five main characters, and some dungeon crawling footage.

While the original game didn’t feature pre-made characters, similar to the previous 3DS remake in Etrian Odyssey Untold: The Millenium Girl, the second remake installment will have its set of characters, as well.

Here’s another look at the five characters:

I’d rather have a new title. I’m okay with them trying spin-off things like a story-centric EO remake, I just think we learnt from the first remake that it doesn’t actually work for this series.

  • Detrimont

the second one was my least favourite of the main games, so it’ll be good to see if this improves it or not(i’m gonna get it regardless)

  • Blesmi

Well considering how EO:U was probably the worst EO game this is really disappointing news, especially since the classes in EO1 and EO2 were pretty much the same, unlike EO3 and 4 which had some pretty interesting and unique classes. Would much rather have EO5 to be perfectly honest.

    • Wait…so…how was EOU bad?

      • Detrimont

yeah, i wanna know that too

      • Landale

Aside from the ending, I didn’t really see any major problems with it.
“We’ve saved the world. Except 5 more of those things are out there. Let’s split up and think nothing of this!” Kind of a horrible way to end things.

        • I think it was a fairly decent attempt to try to make heads or tails of the back story while trying to be original about it, the story mode anyways, but I can see where one might be put off by the end easily.

The game itself certainly benefited from the gains that EO IV had as well as its own enhancements in the game and it appears EOU2 is getting its own as well. I’m kind of hoping that means something for V if and when it becomes a thing.

  • 1:00 mark I’m noticing some additions to the bottom screen. Anyone got a clue as to the 3 arrow icons below the now 8 colors you can choose for marking territory (instead of 4)?

    • Dudemeister

My guess is that the 3 arrow icons you are referring to might be a redesign of the auto-walk feature the 3rd, 4th, and EO:U had.

Perhaps the arrow icon below the yellow floor tile icon is the one that allows you to draw the direction you want to auto-walk, instead of having to drag-and-drop now maybe?

The one on the right might be an eraser-like thing exclusive to the auto-walk feature, much like the floor tile and wall erasers.

As for the one below… I have no idea what to make of it. :(

      • I just wonder if it’s going to make navigating a certain frozen corridor easier…

        • Dudemeister

Ah, good point. We’ll just have to wait and see how it actually works.

  • Grayjack

Nice. I assume this means we’ll be getting an EO3 remake next year?

  • This is Atlus. I won’t get my hopes up yet. Like the US getting hopes up at Japanese trailers, I’ll get my hopes up for a European release when the English trailers start pouring in.

    • I would probably say you’re going to be in line to get it late 2015/early 2016 if the last several releases for EO have anything to say about it. US probably some time in 2015.

  • zeta

whats with all the hate i like all EO there’s nothing wrong with remaking the old ones?

    • Blesmi

If you like the old ones then PLAY the old ones. Why not make NEW games with NEW fresh classes instead of just the same shit again?

      • Honestly, I don’t mind the redo. It allows the older titles to be that much more accessible.

I mean, did you play 2? How long did you have to grind on the very first few floors? It goes without saying that the first couple of games needed some polish.

      • Apartheidfunclub

whelp EOIV was shit already and extremely short so I am all for a remake with some shallow story and the option of playing it vanilla with improved graphics and all the little things that made EOU a better game than IV.

        • EO4 was an incredible game, but Untold was a welcome return to the classic setup of one continuous dungeon for fans that missed that particular approach

    • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

Because this is clearly a quick cash grab by ATLUS. Sega is trying to recoup costs of their overpriced acquisition.

Look at the Persona spinoffs, and now the EO remakes – and especially the EO remakes, very low budget and cheaply made but marketed as a brand new game.

Instead of focusing on making a brand new EO game they decide to go down this quick cash grab route.

      • alhamega

…What’s your problem? You keep saying about this stuff over and over again like hundred times while the information isn’t even true. Is their gaming business bothering you that much? It’s getting so annoying.

        • People not happy about it being EOV, probably.

          • Landale

It’s still entirely possible that that’s in the works anyway. This is only the first of three reveals.

          • Given the story, it’s pretty much a given (barring cash) that there will probably be a V or VI. But that’s interesting that they have a grand total of three sites open for that.

          • Hexodious

I’m not trying to start a war or something, but if there are three reveals and one of them is a remake of EO2, than those two make perfect sense to be remakes as well? …Because if you count it, there are only two games left to be remade after EO2; III and VI.

      • hng qtr

I doubt Untold was much cheaper to make than IV, engine aside. The game was pretty much remade from scratch, the only thing that’s the same as the DS game are the classes portraits.

        • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

Untold’s engine is exactly the same as IV’s. Sprites, colors, enemies, and status effects all look the same.

And now take a look at the trailer, you have the exact same of everything in the EOII remake.

Face the fact. EOU & EOII Remake are plain and utter cash grabs orchestrated by a desperate parent company. The fact remains that both games are cheaply made and cheaply presented.

          • hng qtr

Re-using assets is something they have been doing since they started making games. The 3 EO games on DS and Strange Journey all used the same engine.

          • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

Glad to see you understand that your own statement may not hold true. Happy gaming

          • hng qtr

What? I said that the most they espent on EO IV was probably to make the new engine. Which was used on many games just like the first Etrian Odyssey, so it’s hardly part of EO IV budget . Untold actually had a lot of care put on it for a remake, with diffferent maps, extra dungeons, new systems, classes and completly re-balancing the game.

          • It sounds like youdon’t even like EO. Why are you in a thread about it?

  • Gregor

Me too would have preferred EOV, but I find the second EO the best of the series in terms of strata/atmosphere, so I don’t mind a remake… Classic mode this time, and please no more grimoire stones :|

  • Landale

Kind of surprised to see people getting so worked up over a remake.
Like it or not, let’s try being a bit more civil about this and other people’s opinions on the matter.

    • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

It’s just the fact that ATLUS has changed for the worse. They are now a company almost completely dedicated to making more spinoffs and remakes which are 99.99% of lower quality storywise and gameplaywise. EOUntold was an unwelcomed game by the fans.

Now fans get another remake with story that is most likely going to be poorly written, characters who will never grow out of their cliches, and battle system without any major innovations.

Instead of EOV, fans get not only remakes but two at that. Perhaps ATLUS will wish to do another remake in the future. Persona’s the same with all the spinoffs etc.

      One word: disappointing.

      • Gregor

        I would gladly accept a SMT1/2 remake :P

      • Landale

You’re running on a lot of assumptions and personal opinion.
They could just as easily make an EOV. With a story that is poorly written, characters that never grow out of cliches, and no battle system innovations. Remake, spin off, new game, it’s all still the same possibility.

        • DAT Bird From DAT Cage

Maybe, but ATLUS, besides having a cheap and cash-grabbing mentality, also decides to premium price their REMAKES AND SPINOFFS.

This is arrogance on their part.

Basically, ATLUS assumes the fans who buy their games are stupid. Stupid enough to buy remakes and spinoffs not just at full price, but at a premium price to most, if not all games in their respective genres on the respective consoles.

          A shameful attitude.

          • ivarious

Since I haven’t played EO2 yet I’m going to buy this game. What are you going to do?

          • DividedSeraph

Well… they’re right? Fans are buying them. Can’t blame them for doing what’s profitable.

      • Tarkovsky

“EOUntold was an unwelcomed game by the fans.”

NOPE. My existence proves your your statement wrong. I’m also looking forward to this game. Just because you don’t like it doesn’t mean nobody else does.

Edit: Btw, if you have seen my previous posts, you’d know that I’m the biggest propoent of creating new games.

        • あっかり~ん

… but it was unwelcomed by MOST EO fans. Sure it made EO I more accesible for newcomers, plus added skill tree and proper skill descriptions, but I’ve yet to find someone that recommends EO:U for the Story Mode. Also the added grimmoire stones feature wasn’t well received either. Plus one had to beat Story Mode to unlock some classes.

Also if all that wasn’t bad enough, Ricky was in the game

          • It was unwelcome to tryhards, but to honest Etrian fans who actually played it, Untold (at least on Classic) was a wonderful, more balanced update to a game that REALLY needed it. A lot of the series’ more hardcore fans even preferred this game on Classic Expert to Etrian Odyssey 4, which didn’t have quite the same level of challenge as the DS trilogy

          • あっかり~ん

[…]”A lot of the series’ more hardcore fans even preferred this game on Classic Expert to Etrian Odyssey 4″[…] as I said before the Story Mode was the “lacking” part, which was what I was addressing on my previous comment since the new mode was the new big feature of the game. EO 1 did get a more balanced and polished version (EO;U) as both of us remarked. I never mentioned EO:U Classic Mode in my comment.

Don’t get me wrong, I am quite pleased with this remake. Don’t hate me :^)

          • Fair. Story mode wasn’t my preferred way to play Untold, but I did complete it just to see what was up, and I was impressed with how the narrative was handled in such a way that it didn’t really interfere with the dungeon crawling gameplay. The dialogue scenes were no more intrusive than, say, Kujura and Olympia stopping you to talk on every floor in 3, or the guest character scenes in 4. I still prefer Classic, but for people who want pre-written characters instead of rolling their own, it’s good to have both, and thankfully the core game doesn’t suffer in the process

      • raygunner659

It’s really just the Persona 4 spinoffs that are pushing it for Atlus, I think. Also, while not a perfect system, the Grimoire Stones in EOU were, imo, a major battle innovation. They could’ve easily stuck subclasses back in and no one would’ve noticed, but they decided to go for another system instead to stay true to the first game, which didn’t have subclasses, and still bring something new to it.

EOU was very welcome to me. I actually never had the first game. Had to play it off a friend’s. Didn’t get close to beating it. I’d personally like to see them play around with other ideas in remakes before they do EOV. If they’re not ready for it, then forcing it isn’t gonna bring anything new.

I do get where you’re coming from though. The story of previous EOs were definitely more powerful in their subtlety and the lack of specific reaction from party members allowed you as the player and explorer to really react to the environments.

    • Figured you were the culprit.

      • Landale

Insults are unnecessary, same with lashing out at people for holding different opinions. That’s why only DAT Bird’s initial post, and the replies to it, were removed. His reply to zeta below is essentially the same, minus the insults thrown at Atlus, so it’s fine, for example.
Or perhaps you’re annoyed about your picture post disappearing? That one was dealt with by the system’s filters, and it’s still technically there, you just need a link to the post to see it.
If you have a problem with keeping things civil, feel free to go elsewhere. If you have a problem with the moderation, bring it up on Twitter or the OT. Don’t continue to derail this.

  • Draparde

i’m personally glad there doing this second one, as i enjoyed EO:U. though i do wish they’d add or change up the classes… at least make them look different. 3 is my favorite in terms of classes i’d say.

  • link

Everyone don’t give up your hopes they haven’t revealed “D” and “X” yet

  • Also, another point:

Who else is already wondering what Koshiro’s doing for the remix OST?

  • Markusfalcon

So, will this have a classic mode as well? I mean, I’ll play it if it doesn’t, but I don’t want them to start a trend like that so the eventual fifth main entry ends up being story only…

  • CozyAndWarm

Man, they’re really churning these things out. Not sure how I feel about that… but since EO2 is a great game in its own right and I passed on EO1 Untold, I’ll probably give this a shot

  • fyi1191

I was wondering what’s up with her legs.

    • あっかり~ん

Maybe she is a Gundam (like Setsuna) and is flying in the pic. *TOH*

    • rubin

She suffers from Fire Emblem syndrome

      • shytende

After playing EOU, I wondered if it was the same character designer…

    • Reiswindy

      Armpits confirmed.

    • She’s kind of overdesigned, not a fan. I preferred Classic to Story in the first EOU but even then the outfits on the Story characters were more practical and actually representative of their character classes. It’s not as bad as the War Magus girl at least

    • 4shiki

      It’s Yuuji Himukai’s style.

  • Namuro

That looks amazing! I especially love the protagonist’s design, and his demon form is pretty cool, too.

Wonder if they’ll start making all the future instalments with proper story and characters like these remakes?

    • AkuLord3

I rather not have forced protags for this series…if so i’ll just play any other rpgs and while 1’s story was pretty quiet, the other titles shown more in story. Still i enjoyed Untold’s retelling and i’ll enjoy this one since EO2’s story and world is interesting and cool.

      • shytende

        I thnk it’ll stay a choice.
EOU allowed a lot of choice of gameplay, and that was a pretty good thing honnestly.
What I would really like is to have more than one save, because not being able to have both a Story and Classic save was pretty annoying.

    • raygunner659

Personally I think they did story well enough in EO3 and 4 without needing characters like these. There was a pretty proper story in both of them when you reached those points, whereas the exciting and active parts of the story in EO1 and 2 sort of kicked into gear at the very end and in the post-game.

And that demon form does look pretty cool. It’d be alright by me to introduce that sort of form changing concept into the next game in the series.

  • rubin

Oh god, I hope Atlus doesn’t drop the ball in Europe with this one like they did with SMT IV. Although the first Untold and IV were released here, the original EO II (and III) wasnt. I’m not sure what can I expect from them anymore…

    • shytende

It’s probably NISA who will release it.
They did released IV, Untold (andwill release Persona Q).

Atlus never released anything over there.
Most SMT games were handed by Ghostlight.

They probably won’t be a lot of copy of the game sold though…

  • Mrgrgr and Unacceptable World

    Daisuke Ono and Keiji Fujiwara.^_^

While i don’t really like Untold 1(Especially due to the stupid Grimmoire and the fact that they lock two special jobs from the classic play style on the first playthrough.)

I hope these time Atlus will solve that problem and at least makes me happy to get this game.^__^

    • Jero

Grimoire stones were a drag but with the glitch the game had it was really easy to create them. I even sacrificed 4 leves with each character to get a 10/10/10 gather Grimoire.

    • DyLaN

      Its Daisuke Namikawa btw.

  • triablos

Never played these games, but I liked the demo. Its a bit too “closed up” for my taste though, since you basically spend the whole game in a grid map. I like to be able to walk around a world map, visit towns etc like dragon quest.

Also guessing an untold 3 is coming up

    • decus

You might enjoy EO4 more, dunno. Still only the one town essentially (there are others, but not as regular visits really), but you have a world map between dungeons.

  • Anna Scruton

Now to wait for the inevitable 3rd game remake. Its my favorite in the series. Dat princess class.

    • Sean x Crosser

Ninja for me. But Princess does make things more tolerable, rather than scrambling to save everyone.

And by lord, hope they bring back the sailing missions. I loved doing those to shake things up sometimes.

      • decus

Just make an all Prince(ss) party, it’s hilarious.

  • Alexander Aubert

i need a review for the millenium girl, if anybody would like to give me one?

    • AkuLord3

If you like EO games, check it out, if you don’t…try the demo and see if you like it (if you don’t mind first person rpgs). Lots of neat things they added for exploring, remix/classic music, grimoire system where you can use other characters/monsters moves (kinda mixed, i don’t mind it but others are mixed).
Its a fine great rpg series like the others

    • Destiny13777

Try the demo if you can, EOU is the one with the most advancements that you won’t find in the other games from what I remember like autowalking and pressing B to walk faster.

    • Suicunesol

I never finished EO:U, but I’m not terribly into EO anyways. What I saw of EO:U in the demo seemed of high-quality (not surprised). Graphics looked great, music was catchy and/or relaxing. Voice-acting was decent. One of my favorite features is how the still-2D background artwork was rendered in stereoscopic 3D, as opposed to in EO4. Really, really beautiful. A shame that nobody cares about stuff like that.

I think a review for EO won’t help many people. EO is a niche series intended for a certain type of gamer, and many people do not care for it. You either love it or you don’t.

From what I’ve seen from EOU and EO4, I think they’re well made, bug-less, pretty games made with old-fashioned game design concepts. But personally, I believe EO games can be made vastly better without betraying the vision by introducing some innovative world-building and character-building techniques such as city-exploration, recruitable NPCs, and more elaborate character creation.

    • KuroNathan

EO:U is not a great entry point for EO. EO IV is by far the most accessible of the series while still maintaining its charm. My main gripe with EO:U was the new mechanics they introduced made it a horrible pain to play and the story wasn’t even that good.

      • natchu96

EOIV is also easier than the rest of the series. And grimoire stones sucked, yeah.

It’s a decent entry point for people who are more used to playing RPGs with a fixed character party to get attached to. You know, to ease them in. Mechanically EOIV is definitely better.

  • DanijoEX ♬ the Cosmic Owl

I figured that Altus would do a EO II remake which is fine by me.

    • shytende

We may finally be able to play this game in Europe without import or emulation.

      So, I’m pretty excited, honnestly.

      • DanijoEX ♬ the Cosmic Owl

I’m sure NISA will bring it over to Europe.

        • shytende

That’s actually what I said in another comment.

I’m glad I’m not the only one to think that way.

  • AkuLord3

Rather a EO5 and see something new BUT i really enjoyed EO2 and Untold was good so i don’t mind and will pick it up. I guess an EO3 Untold will happen but can we get a new entry next time Atlus?

    • decus

I assume they’re still working on it and it’ll release half a year after this remake. I’m hoping for tons of new monster designs or something, but worst case they’ll at least have all of the monsters they’ve currently made in 3D after this and EO3 remake if they do somehow release that before EO5.

  • riceisnice

I dunno… I like Racoona and Frederica more.

    • shytende

We know basically nothing on them yet, though.

      Unless you mean character design.

      • riceisnice

I know they’re both little anime girl stereotypes. That’s enough for me to prefer Racoona.

        • shytende

          “Is that so eh ?”

To be fair, it would be hard to do better than Raquna, I’ll give you that

          • natchu96

Her background did kind of spoil the reveal of Classic Mode though. Being from some far off northeastern town named Ontario really throws suspicions on the fantasy world you’re in really quickly.

But yeah, Raquna Sheldon was awesome eh?

  • It’s getting harder and harder to resist a 3DS. These Untold games are everything I want from the franchise: the inclusion, of actual characters. I really dislike custom character creation in RPGs.

    • Joshelplex

Why even play RPGs then? The customization is the only real draw for the genre at all.

      • 하세요

That’s a huge matter of opinion. Some people enjoy making their own character, but that also means your character probably won’t have any emotion, major backstory, etc.

Having an actual protagonist gives the main character depth from the start, and you can feel as if you’re part of the story already. All of my favorite RPGs have already-made protagonists. I’m not a fan of custom characters either when it comes to the actual plot.

      • Lobbying

He specifically said “custom character /creation/” not customization in general and not every RPG has that.

        • This, basically. I’m okay with customization, just not making characters and getting into the “oh gee, I’m playing as myself in the game oooooooh” feel.

Also the reason I go with manga names in Pokémon games.

      • Jero

Actually it’s easier for new people to get into the series if the game has pre made characters and a story, otherwise the game looks too “hardcore”. The first time I played EO4 I just didn’t get it but with untold I had a story to look forward to which kept me engaged just enough time to get used to the whole map drawing and stuff.

    • Destiny13777

At least they give us the option to do Story Mode or Classic with the Untold titles so thats a huge plus.

      • Yeah, this genre has a big ass root, I wouldn’t want anyone to miss out on classic mode either.

I just personally really like the fact that they are doing a bit more with the story and it certainly makes me interested in the franchise a lot more than in the DS era.

        • Destiny13777

Yeah I’m glad the games can even be playable to people who thought the games had no plot and think there losing out when having your own characters instead of scripted ones.

  • JohnNiles

I’m going to need the long gap between when it releases there and when it releases here; I need a break. Been playing EO: Untold on hard/story mode and the game is kicking my butt.

Story mode is a toss-up – class choice is one of the series’ strong points and being locked into a specific party type has been rather trying. I’m definitely going to enjoy the more lenient reset penalty though.

    • natchu96

Well you could class change them . . . Simon makes a decent Troubadoor if you wanted AOE HOT that much. Which you probably do, it’s so easy to proc Echoing Rondo endgame and it heals for tons with just one cast.

I just had to get creative with utilizing the base classes of the rest, but I admit it was pretty tough.

  • I don’t see the big fuss. If they were going to do a remake of 2 anyway (which they were, let’s be honest), isn’t it better that we’re getting it sooner rather than later? If you don’t think the remake is worth the price of admission of a full game, then just wait! Atlus digital games go on sale so frequently anyway. I got the first EOU for 20 dollars 3 months after it came out.

For people who are Etrian Odyssey fans, this remake could fix a lot of the issues that plagued the original EO2. Imagine being able to build a team with more than 5 or 6 viable classes to choose from. Imagine being able to get EXP from FOE battles (I know the point of taking it out was to drive home the point that you aren’t supposed to fight them, but you end up fighting them so often for materials anyway that it’s kind of moot). Imagine Petal Bridge recorded by a full band. There’s a lot to look forward to

Plus, most important of all, if there’s a remake of 2 on the way, that means there’s probably a remake of 3 (by far the best in the series) in the pipeline as well

    • Markusfalcon

Heh, I’d buy a remake of 3 just to hear the new arranged versions of the OST.

    • raygunner659

Even if the game changes nothing and the re-done story sucks and the classes aren’t redone at all I will pick the game up for Petal Bridge orchestrated. Well all the music orchestrated. But especially that one.

    • Zeik56

The potential for them to fix the issues that plagued the orignal EO2 is somewhat enticing, but I would have been much happier to see this be an original game. I liked EO3 a lot (although I liked 4 more) but I don’t really want to see a remake of that game either.

It’s starting to feel like they’re to overwrite the original games with Untold, which leaves me a little concerned for the future of the series. When they announced Untold I figured it would just be offshoot, which is fine, but if they actually intend to use it to replace the series entirely that’s kinda sad.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    Who else called it?

  • Shane Guidaboni

Hell yeah! This is exactly what I wanted. Can’t wait to fight Ur-Child again.

  • raygunner659

YES! MORE EO! Hopefully they’re gonna buff the War Magus class, cause Arianna seems to fit that sort of class (unless it’s a new class, or the medic), and I really didn’t like playing as War Magus last time. Personally I was sort of hoping they would play with other classes as well, but it seems like we’re getting an extremely similar set-up to EOU.

Also Chloe’s portrait just does not work for me. Because the other characters have a very limited colour palette, she just looks out of place. Blegh. Oh, and she looks out of place regardless.

    • decus

War Magus was one of the better classes in EO2. It wasn’t as broken as some of the others, but it pretty much made Medic not worth it. Though they’re 100% going to rebalance all of the classes anyway since EO2 was pretty much just strong reactions to the imbalance of EO1 that ended up making landsharks and medics horrible and alchemists and survivalists way less effective. It was pretty much Ronin, Hexer, Dark Hunter and War Magus as the backbone of any party. Gunner was okay too.

      • natchu96

So that’s what medics were like in 2 huh. Learn something new about series history every day.

Was Medic EVER worth it after 1? Even in 4 they were good for subbing and that’s it XD

  • This is good for me, now I can -hopefully- play and collect all the EO titles for my 3DS. (So many 3DS still have yet to pick up.)

  • Cephrien

    Dark-skin / White-hair : = w = b

    • natchu96

It’s never dark skin and dark hair is it :(

Still looks better on girls imo, but then again a lot of cliche anime complexions do.

  • Aristides

Hey, maybe 4 years from now we can get a remake of IV on the 3DS, XD just kidding.

  • kyrt

    flavio = insta buy

  • あっかり~ん

Oh c’mon Atlus, start making REAL games instead of half-assed remakes and spin-offs. You really dropped you’re level. I’m really angry all I wanted from you was to release SMT: DeSu 2 Break Record

    • Raltrios

The last thing I’d say about how this game looks is half-assed.

    • natchu96

Technically speaking EO2 was 2D, so they had to use the EO4 engine and reprogram the whole thing.

Ironic because Break Record is a remake as well.

  • ZnTxn

So the first Untold had a Gunner, now this one have a Princess class (maybe? I’m just guessing by the artwork). I’m expecting an Imperial if they remade the third one.

    • shytende

I’m interrested by Protag’s Demon Form.
I wonder how that works gameplay wise.

She should be a support/healing class normally (because I see no Medic), so Princess would fits.

      • ZnTxn

Well, in the original, the War Magus also works as a Medic among other things.

        • natchu96

I never played EO1 and 2, and was only somewhat familiar with EO3 mechanically (and never actually played it either). I learned of EO during the 4 era and played EOU first to test the waters.

What do War Magi even DO exactly? O_O

And yeah, probably they’d use some iconic class from the next numbered game (an new take on it though at least) as the heroine and an original class for the protagonist if they continue the EO Untold series. Jack Frost Hat Gunner was the cover girl for 2 right? And Princess for 3? Cover girl for 4 was just a landy though . . . but I guess there are no landsknechts in EO3 so that would work anyway. Would love Imperial however, even if nobody is supposed to know they exist.

          • ZnTxn

The War Magus was a hybrid between a Medic, Troubadour, and weird attacker.

Like the Medic, they learn healing skills (except Revive). Has skills that increase the stats of your party like a Troubadour, but it costs a bit more and targets 1 ally (I think). And as an attacker, they learn skills that have added effects if the enemy has a status problem.

Venomcut, for example, can bind the legs of a poisoned enemy. Cursecut recovers their MP if the enemy is cursed.

They also have a skill that transfers their MP to another party member.

They basically can do a bit of everything, have good stats, but they really need a Hexer, or even a Dark Hunter with sword skills.

  • IS | 桂木

The protagonist looks like Soma from God Eater. I shall name him thus

  • Laith Rem

Protag and Arianna seem to be Childhood friends for those that are into that sort of thing.

  • DyLaN

Not sure have this been posted, but here are the list of CVs:

    Protagonist – Hikaru Midorikawa
Arianna – Risa Taneda (Obligatory “Ie senpai” joke)
    Flavio – Daisuke Namikawa
Beltran – Keiji Fujiwara (Hot damn, I really enjoyed his performance as Kenjiro in MCA)
    Chloe – Yuka Iguchi

Once again I feel the need to say tht Madhouse is doing a good job on the cutscenes. Just make a EO anime ady Xd

  • Jero

I’m so buying it when it goes on sale. Not because it’s not worth the full price but because I’m not that eager to play it so I can wait.

  • Roger

News of the week for me.

EOIII~IV~Untold were so well made. Especially the last two, where they changed the sprites for moving 3-D models and improved the soundtrack as well.

Never liked the original first two games very much…so a continuity for Untold’s story is welcome. (if they actually end up connected, that is)

Also, happy that they didn’t go 7th Dragon way and changed the first person perspective for cheap chibi 3-D models.

  • lemon

Ugh. It pains me that Atlus is doing this stupid story mode shit again.

    • Mnstrzero00

Don’t they allow you to play it normally, without story and with your own self-made characters?

      • Aemette

Yeah but if they make it like they did in Untold where the “new classes” and some of the more useful skills pertaining to said classes had to be unlocked, then I’m with lemon. Untold felt like it forced you to play the story mode if you wanted to enjoy a game with your own characters.

        • decus

Yeah, that’s pretty much it except for that last sentence–you couldn’t even make a gunner or highlander, you had to reclass after level 30 and they wouldn’t have stats for it and those weren’t in the original and thus not ‘classic’ anyway. But, to get 100% completion or whatever you also had to play story mode since some of the item drops were different and you would be missing some bestiary.

IMO, that wouldn’t matter so much if you could at least use your classic mode characters in the story mode party or something. Or if it gave you the option of auto-leveling the story mode guys to match your classic mode characters just so people who never want to touch story mode again could power through it. And people who actually wanted to play it could just not take the option. At the same time, I can also understand them not doing this since people who care about 100% completion are the minority. Though maybe now it’ll be more possible for EOII! U-unless they keep the old level cap system.

That said, I personally enjoyed story mode.

          • Highlander wasn’t very useful anyway, at least in a Classic party. He was a glass cannon to begin with which makes it worse that most of his best skill consume HP

          • natchu96

I rarely ran out of HP with the guy until everyone ELSE died actually. Which is weird.

Never mind that my main defense was a bind-oriented dominatrix Ricky lol.

But really though, nothing wrong with glass cannons in EO. Highlandy dealt tons of damage when done right. And Imperials in EO4 were so bursty it was hilarious.

          • I’m no stranger to glass cannons. Hell, in mycurrent run of 3 my front line is HZA. As long as you have adequate defensive measures in your party a glass cannon is fine, but I didn’t have the same love for Highlander until I got a Vicious Bite grimoire to do damage that didn’t sap his health

    • benhofb

I mean, you could play in normal mode and skip the story stuff. Either that or just play the original from the DS… I didn’t think the story of the first EOU was that bad to be honest.

    • natchu96

Oh my god, they added an optional feature to appeal to a slightly different audience that can be completely ignored! This sucks!

      • lemon

I think it goes against the point of the series. On the first game’s website, the original director of the series (Kazuya Niinou) wrote about using your imagination to create livelier scenarios than can be created normally. With the addition of a story mode with preset character personalities, that is thrown out the window. The only saving grace is the ability to ignore it.

        • natchu96

So the only saving grace is that for people that don’t care for story mode it ultimately makes next to no difference?

I mean, the best Katana in the game being unlocked in the mode where the weapon is useless is one of the more legitimate arguments, but people tell me it isn’t the first time EO has dropped weapons in a gameplay path where said weapon was pointless.

  • benhofb

This looks pretty awesome! I’d love to know more about the main character’s demon form though. I hope that’ll play a factor in the gameplay. Character designs also look hella awesome.

    • shytende

At around 1:16, you see the Protagonist in his demon form on the battle screen.

But I have to admit I’m also really interrested about this.

      • natchu96

What with the game being called The Knight of Fafnir, I am inclined to believe that is not a demon, but a half-dragon.

Time to go dragon slaying. Fancy saints and heroes grab holy swords as a crutch to do so, we from High Lagaard fight fire with fire!

  • Roger

After Persona Q announcement, I thought they were done with the series. Baseless supposition, I guess…but the sales did worried me a bit (they’ve decreased on each entry, or so I heard).

Actually thought Persona Q was supposed to be 2014’s EO as well. It´s good to see the series still breathes.

    • Ryker

I felt exactly the same way. I think it will be more telling after this announcement though, this game has probably been in development for awhile. Hopefully it does well enough to warrant a true sequel and Untold III. I know I’m giving my support to it, in fact this news has made me completely ecstatic!

    • Moon Knight

The sales of the series kept going up until Untold.

      EO1 sold ~32k
      EO2 sold ~68k
      EO3 sold ~87k
      EO4 sold ~95k
      EO1U sold ~88k

Keep in mind that EO4 and EO1U were released on systems without as big of an install base. Also keep in mind that EO1U was released on the goodwill of its predecessors.

if EO2U does worse than EO1U, then we can assume that, not only was EO2U worse than EO4, but that the series is losing the goodwill that it gained from EO3 and EO4.

      • Roger

        Thanks for the info!

If EO2U does worse it would probably be a sign that maybe they should focus on completely new entries instead of producing remakes with improved mechanics, in fact.

Actually…just hope sales are enough to conclude that story about 7 Yggdrasils.

        I miss the EO3/EO4 boat/balloons ):
New mechanics are welcome too, though.

Maybe one of the other teaser sites are related to EO5?

      • MillerKun

EOU the dungeon crawler gets overshadow by Persona and if I never heard much about it besides new game entrys, in my opinion.Don’t get me wrong I played the demo for Untold for the 3Ds thought it was pretty great.

      • natchu96

P4Q’s existence MAY boost the sales a little, what with dragging in part of the relatively large P4 fanbase to see if they like the EO gameplay.

I hope this does well though. Me wants EO3U or EO5.

      • Mathew

I think you’re looking at those numbers way too simplistically.
EO1U is the second best-selling game in the series, only 7k behind EO4, despite 32k people already owning EO1. That doesn’t suggest a lack of goodwill.
If EO2U’s numbers drop significantly, bearing in mind that 68k people bought EO2 already (so 55-60k would be par), then maybe you can draw that conclusion.

  • SetzerGabbiani

I will pre-order as soon as Sega/Atlus let us know it will be localized. I can’t believe people are complaining like we didn’t see this coming….Anyway, I can’t wait for the 3rd installment!

  • Shadow Bloodedge

ATLUS, take my money! While you’re at it, let’s see their classes!

  • Sebastian Lothian

This looks more interesting than the story for the first remake.

  • Kornelious

Wow, and I thought the first Untold’s protagonist looked bad X(

Though I do like how they are remaking these game’s with new stories, And even though I haven’t gotten the first one yet, i’d be pretty interested in seeing this game come Stateside :)

  • Rasputing

Anyone else noticed how the new characters seem older? Most of EOU’s characters looked like teenagers, while all three guys here seem like they could be adults (Bertrand could even be a bit older). I wonder if this was just a design choice, or whether something prompted the change.

May just be my poor eyes though.

    • natchu96

      It IS strange.

Traditionally the EO art style made most females look really young, and if anything the males weren’t too far behind. They have been looking older lately.

      • animefreakhq

I was hoping that the females would look at least like they’re in their teen but that’s asking for much from Japan.

  • CharIotteV

How are you guys surprised and angry about this? Did you really think they were going to remake only the first game? Personally, I was hoping they would go through I~III, the DS games, so I’m actually pleased about this.

  • Frozen_kappa

Protagonist – Fafnir (Knight) [In Norse legend Fafnir was turned into a dragon]
    Arianna – Princess
Flavio – Ranger [Survivalist in the English EO1/2]
Bertrand – Paladin [Protector in the English EO1/2]
Chloe – Doctor Magus [War Magus in the English EO2]

It seems like the Hero is a new class and the heroine is a class from the next game like in EOU. I’m not sure if the new class is “Fafnir Knight” or the Knight is just part of his title. The other characters’ have their name and class in English (using the Japanese class names) but the protagonist is just Hero

    • shytende

      Chloe is War Magus ?
      Now, that’s interresting.

I wonder which one will know the revive spells…

      • KuroNathan

        medicine or reclassing I’m assuming.

  • Tom_Phoenix

This is actually good news for me. I’ve been interested in getting into this series for a while now, but I was conflicted as to whether I should start with II or III. Since II is now getting a remake and I don’t have a 3DS yet, I might as well try out III on the DS and then decide whether I want to play more of the series on the 3DS.

  • KuroNathan

Hmmmm…. on one hand I’m excited about a new Etrian Odyssey game, especially since I was very very /very/ afraid of Persona Q being the new EO. On the other hand I was not a very big fan of EO II and consider it the weakest EO out of the original IV.

I was also not a very big fan of EO: U and felt that they took a lot of steps backwards mechanics wise (adding more RNG in the form of god awful grimoire stones) and was disappointed by the lackluster story telling (which is weird considering its the same group that handled SMTIV).

It may be that I over hyped myself last time with EO I:U but I’m goign to approach this game cautiously. Please for the love of god remove grimoire stones and give us back subclassing.

    • Aemette

“Please for the love of god remove grimoire stones and give us back subclassing.” nuff said.

I get it, they were going for a new mechanic, a new direction, they wanted to spice things up but to me, it didn’t work out well so this is one “new addition” I would be okay with losing.

      • KuroNathan

It was an interesting idea at its base but way way wayyyy too random to make it work. They should have let you cut down on some of the variability like skill hunting in DeSur where you can pick the skill you want to generate. or let you combine like skills to increase their base level or something.

Something other then throw it all to chance and hope against hope you get the skill you wanted at a high level.

    • natchu96

On one hand, EO1 and EO2 had no subclasses, so they might need to get some rebalancing done with skill interactions if they tossed that in.

On the other hand, grimoire stones can seriously go to hell.

    • ZnTxn

In the trailer, there were several screens, and one of them was similar to the Grimoire Stone menu. Hope you like those King Grimoires *shot*

  • Ms_Fortune

Look way better than the moe crap from the first one.

    • natchu96

      Ricky was cute >_<

Ice cream fanatic too. Can't go wrong with a friend like that. I wonder what she wound up doing with Highlander.

    • Amine Hsu Nekuchan

except, you know, pevious team didn’t have a loli and this one does, so expect 1 million times more moe.

      • Ms_Fortune

Yea but its balanced out by the 2 Bara’s.

Getting some major papa nier vibes from the MC.

        • Amine Hsu Nekuchan

I dunno, Raquna was basically a bro anyway. and in this one the buttmonkey is a loli and looks to have a tsundere type personality which is on top of the the litterial princess who I’m sure is going to play up the prissy princess stereotype… not amount of bara can balance out the sheer amounts of annoying moe I’m seeing.

  • natchu96

    Did the MC just transform?

We have ourselves the Knight of Fafnir I guess.

  • disgaea36

NAh I’ll stick to the originals it’s what made the series unique plus I haven’t had a chance to play 4 yet so I’m good I’ll patiently wait for EO5

  • Amine Hsu Nekuchan

Uhg, there is a lot I could complain about but the thing that sticks out to me the most right now? How terrible the party composition is. Protag is obviously a front row melee physical damage dealer with self buffs, We have a Protector for tanking, maybe some minor healing and minor front row melee physical damage, then a War Magus… I’m going assume they drop the wacky “target must have a specific status for this to work’ melee attacks and just make then straight up melee attacks with binds or some special effects…. so it’s a… front row melee attacker with binds, some healing and some buffs, then we have the Survivalist, back row physical ranged damage with some status and various utility powers and finally a Princess… front row buffer that is bulky enough to do some tanking….. so 4 front row classes… 3 classes that focus on buffing… and no class that has any elemental or magic damage, nor any class with a strong focus on status of binds (like Hexer or Dark Hunter)… hell, none of the classes even have revive, though I’m sure they can toss that one someone… Seriously though War Magus? Survivalist? At least the previous game’s fixed party made sense for new or casual players with a traditional, Physical Damage/Tank/Magical Damage/Healer setup…

    • Tarren

Isn’t Flavio a sniper? He’s got the “lego brick” armguard and a more reinforced looking bow that the snipers in E.O. 4 sport. That’d at least give the party some bindings.

      • Amine Hsu Nekuchan

He’s not a sniper, he’s a Survivalist. EO2 terms that means he would have three status moves, but mostly ranged physical damage and some buffs and debuffs dealing with accuracy and dodge.

    • KuroNathan

I don’t know, it looks like in the trailer Chloe was performing the poison slash thing on the FOE. Also they’ll probably allow reclassing just like EO I:U

      • Amine Hsu Nekuchan

I watched it again and didn’t see it, but I did notice in one scene they have a square where they are scrolling across some of her skills… although it occurs those are just healing skills usable outside combat. Hrm, 3 clearly say ‘HP’ in the description so are probably healing skills… the fourth is going to be harder to figure out…

        • KuroNathan

Chloe is using the move right there. 1000 damage to a poisoned enemy when the players are at lvl 40 sounds like poison slash to me.

          • Amine Hsu Nekuchan

Okay found it, I’ll try to see if I can get someone to translate it.

IN EO2 the War Magus had a skill called Venomcut that had a chance to bind the legs of a poisoned target, they also had Sleepcut that dealt extra damage to a sleeping target….
The big problem with the War Magus was A) it was trying to do too many things and ended up subpar at all of them and B) All of it’s sword skills special properties required the target to already be inflicted with a particular status, none of which it could inflict itself.

Maybe they are going to fix it? But really it’s probably my least favorite class of the entire EO series, and I think it’d need a massive paradigm shift to make it effective.

          • KuroNathan

I’m assuming they’re going to change it or make the hero be able to inflict status effects? I don’t recall princess or suvivalist being able to do so but somehow that FOE was poisoned and it’d be weird to have a war magus as default without a status inflictor.

Either way it looks like she’s using some sort of venom cut related ability. Maybe something along the lines of nightseeker’s shadow bite

          • jugss

Sub par? A War Magus coupled with a Hexer and Dark Hunter can take out any boss in the game plus you get Tp transfer. Cutskills also ignore enemies weapon resistance. Lacks Revive? U can farm nectar pretty easily. They also have strong buffs that’s stronger than Troubadour. Atk Buffs on Gunner and Rounin makes enemies drop like flies.
            My party is usually: WM-DH-Rounin=Front

  • rinalicat

Oh my gosh this looks so cute!!

  • Shippoyasha

Seriously? Drama with this one? The original game wasn’t even that long ago. If this version doesn’t do it for someone, they can always play the original.

  • Nobody

I am both disappointed and excited at the same time. Mostly disappointed. Still, it’ll give me a chance to try out #O 2 for the first time. Sucks knowing what the next EO game will be, however.

  • The minute i saw this i said wow Chloe sure is cute XD so i drew her.

  • animefreakhq

Why do the female characters always look too young?

    • it me

so guys like you can’t get off to it.

like seriously dude, can you air your dirty laundry any clearer? female characters can exist for reasons other than for your sexual pleasure

      • animefreakhq

So just because I want relatable characters automatically assumes its because of my sexual preference? What does that say about you who looks suspicious of being a pedo?

  • it me

skip this and go straight to 3 imo
