A New 3D King of Fighters Game Is In Development

SNK Playmore recently updated their website with a staff recruitment page for a new King of Fighters game, which looks like it will be a 3D fighter for the series’ next installment.

 

According to the page they’re currently looking for a game programmer with experience in console games, various development tools and middleware, a technical designer who can handle high-end graphics, and a CG designer who’ll work on 3D and high-end character models to go with character animations and more.

 

Siliconera got in touch with SNK Playmore to ask whether it’ll be a 3D game, to which they responded, “Indeed, a new installment in 3D in the KOF series is currently in preparation.”

 

The new King of Fighters game and its platform will be announced in the near future.

    Cool! I really liked Maximum Impact 2006 on the PS2. Underrated game. It had good physics for King of Fighters – so much better than the Street Fighter EX series’ attempt to translate 2D action to 3D, and just a bit below Street Fighter IV there.

    Man, makes me wanna bust out my PS2 disc right now :D

    Still, I wonder if they’re going to do this entirely in-house or contract someone like Dimps, Eighting or CyberConnect 2 to help out? I mean, how great/ironic would it be if Dimps helped King of Fighters XIV make a super-successful 3D transition after they helped Capcom do it with Street Fighter IV? :)

      I loved Maximum Impact 2/2006 as well. IMO, it was the best 2D-to-3D fighter adaptation, since it borrowed elements of both 3D and 2D fighters. You had your command moves and your projectiles, from 2D fighters, but you also had sidestepping and some attack strings, like a 3D fighter.

      When reading the article, even after reaching your comment, I thought exactly the same thing! Wouldn’t it be better/awesome if they got some third party like Dimps to do the dirty work this time? Or Eighting? At this point, it would probably make more sense than to hire individual professionals for this.

      Anyway, news of the year to me! I am so glad to see that SNK-P and the KOF series are still alive and breathing!

    Pretty cool, but it sounds like it’ll be years of waiting until we finally see the game. I guess it makes sense to do that I suppose, after a major decade long story arc finally ended. Kind of weird to see so many years go by until the next KOF though.

      True. The waiting will now be a bit harsh, specially for those of us waiting this for so long. The good news is that it will probably make it to the newer gen plataforms, which has the potential to be a gourgeous game.

    Ehhhh. SNK’s 3D games usually have been pretty mediocre. But as long as it doesn’t turn out to be a mobile game, then I’ll be happy.

    Will miss the glorious 2D animations though.

          I once asked Konami if there was any chance of bloody roar coming back given the rumors from last year and I got a reply stating that they cannot comment on the status of any currently active IP. Given that Br is nearly a decade old I’d assume that would be classed as inactive if they had absolutely no plans of bringing it back. I’d go out on a limb and say they’re either testing the waters to see how old staples like Guity Gear and Killer Instinct and the the newer IP’s ( French Bread’s new fighter, Persona Ultimax, etc) fare against powerhouses like Tekken, MK and street fighter in the sales department. If there’s no money to be made or if the fighting game renaissance comes to a preature end it could be a very dangerous gamble on an old IP. Ideally sony should buy the rights so they have an exclusive “nostagia fighter” like KI to keep the PS4/3 relevant to the fighting crowd.

          BR aside, I’m super excited at the possible return of Maximum Impact or something similar. The relatively low barrier of entry in those games made them great for casual play with friends

    Meh, hope the 3D is just for tracing 2D sprites on top of it like they did with 13. Its not like they’d have to start from scratch either since all the sprites in 13 can be reused, they just gona make sprites for new characters.

        You think SNK has money for that? besides that’s not a bad thing…not like they haven’t done that before (or really most fighters back then). If they reuse sprites to work on many other characters especially if this game will be a dream match…i don’t see many people complaining as long as we get favorites.

          I have no idea how SNK is doing financially; that is not my concern. As a fan of the series, I would like to see progress and advancents, naturally. The fact that they have used the same assets for more than a decade in the past and got away with it is no excuse to keep doing it perpetually. I would really like to see the series change face again, and hopefully evolve into something even better than the last installment.

    it’s not because they are looking for 3D modelers that means that they will make a new maximum Impact (which i would be really happy if that happens btw).

      This is a shame as even the connoisseurs of 2D fighters ASW/Capcom/SNK are realising this and having to change their approaches to how they make fighters. Shame as I believe 2D can look timeless whilst 3D can have a harder time withstanding ageing gracefully. The new GG XRD might change that but its currently the exception rather than the rule.

        Kof98 and Kof2002 are the roots, they dont play anything like SF2.

        there is a reason those 2 got “Unlimited match arcade remakes”

        there is a reason those games are more played than Kof13 in south america, China, Korea and Japan.

        hell, even Xuan Dou Zhi Wang aka “King of combat” (A chinese PC game) plays more like Classic Kof than Kof13 does.

          1) They got unlimited match “remakes” (or remasters or w/e) because they are dream match games that stand alone while this is part of an actual Saga and would seem odd to remaster on its own, and 2) 98 and 2002 are still some of the best entries in the franchise and again, that is due in part to their rosters in being Dream Match games. KoF XIII is still great in its own right because it came in the wake of the dreadful XII and was a massive improvement, and it feels like a very dedicated effort from SNK in itself as one of the numbered titles as opposed to being annual, so the work paid off. Lots of people love KoF XI and XIII as well :).

        characters had way less HP, so a 20 hits combo can take a good amount of your health if not kill you. It didn’t had the boreness of watching someone getting combo’ed the whole fucking match while leaving a sensation that the combo will never end (save some special cases like Vanessa and angel in 2002).

        I really fucking loved XIII but it is nowhere near as good as 2002 or 98

      I don’t know if I agree there, Bala’s Mr.Karate showcase at Evo 2012 blew me away and I hope we can continue to see great combo potential like that. I agree with Jadfish, I don’t want this turning into Street Fighter, I want those delicious combos. What I like about KoF XIII is that it still has limitations in its combos and can’t be prolonged with otgs and countering a (slightly) poorly timed ukemi like BlazBlue does which is just ridiculous, and BB doesn’t have enough defence mechanics to compensate for that I find. KoF XIII strikes a really nice balance with its cancel system, nuanced movement types, few (if any) otgs and safer defence.

        You really think hit confirm into 100% combos are good?

          If they cost 100% cancel meter and/or multiple super gauges, (which you will most likely be burning more gauge for utility as it would be risky to try and build up all that meter and save it for one big combo) and all of the good timing with enough air from a launcher or w/e to achieve it, then sure. You get what you put in; it’s good payoff and well warranted if you are able to do it, but good luck.

          Bala got around 60% with no super meter with the max cancel, but he had to prolong the combo a little bit after it ended even to finish him off. It takes time to build meter and sometimes you will want to use your options more quickly to secure victory, that’s where the metagame comes in.

          It takes work to do those combos, and in 3v3 it wouldn’t be wise to do them all the time necessarily, it’s about balance.

            I disagree. If you get slapped and then juggled for that much health without anything you can do then there’s something wrong no matter how much meter you have to burn to achieve it in KOF.

            Though its a 3 on 3 game so even if someone does it during the 2nd match, they won’t have that advantage later (especially if your saving meter and HD bar)…and not everyone can do high tier combos (heck even pro players can drop them) so you’re worry about nothin. This isn’t Marvel where 100% combos happen AS soon as the match starts.

    Ugh, this is heart-breaking because they got 13 so very, very right. And now they’re going to try to make another Maximum Impact instead of growing their success from 13 with a Dream Match 14.

      Are you sure that will be the case? I know they made 3 renditions with the Maximum Impact series but the reason that might have put off long-term fans is because they changed the combo systems too much perhaps? The current system that allows you to chain overheads, do drive cancels, cancel specials, supers and max supers works well and reiterating on those features normally works out well for future installments of the franchise.

      Fingers crossed they can bring it together for the next KOF. And what’s to say they still won’t produce 2D entries in the franchise? Personally I would like to see KOF XIII in some form brought to the PS VITA (its not that large of a download from the info given on PSN) but at this stage its highly doubtful. I’d even take the ability to play it remotely whilst having a posh coffee at the local Costa/NERO or something : P

      Have faith Professor; SNK can make good games and are at least trying to transition to 3D effectively. They might even take the best influences of recent Capcom/Arc System Works releases and create something fantastic. The Maximum Impact games were at least somewhat playable tbh as well so there’s always that fact in their favour as well.

        My lack of faith stems from the fact that Playmore seems to only be able to make one “significant” (i.e. non-mobile) “new” (non-rerelease) game every half decade or so. The time and resources wasted on Maximum Impact 3 or whatever they’re going to call it in our region (KoF 2016, maybe?) could’ve been used on a much better title. By the time Playmore gets another shot at making a new game, they could be bankrupt.

        And yes, I consider it a waste, because the quality of their 3D fighters have consistently declined since their first attempts on the Hyper NeoGeo 64. Fatal Fury: Wild Ambition was actually a pretty good game, but the first Maximum Impact was mediocre at best and Samurai Shodown Sen? Well, the less said about that, the better.

          KOFXII was also garbage but they improved on it with XIII. MIregulation A on the arcade was a pretty good fighter. SSS wasn’t even made by them, it was made by the people that did the techu ninja game series.

          3d also doesn’t mean they’ll make it like MI, but one thing I can say is that the 3d games were the best selling kof games. So that comment you made about them going bankrupt could come from them making a KOF14 before making a 3d one. You can say the games were bad but they still sold very well and 3d is easier for them to make as it takes less time than their current 2.5 style.

            I guess in that case, at least they’ll still be around to re-release some of their good games on other platforms.             As I’ve stated several times before, every time SNK has ventured into 3D development, it’s ended with a product that’s okay at best and, well, Samurai Shodown Sen at worst. Can you honestly blame anyone for showing even an iota of cynicism when SNK Playmore appears to be announcing that they’re going all in on 3D development, when that’s hurt the quality of their releases EVERY SINGLE TIME THEY’VE ATTEMPTED IT BEFORE?

        Also, I’d freaking love 13 on the Vita. I bet it’d look gorgeous!

      They never said they are going for that though, don’t jump to conclusions and get yourself down just yet. Just because they are using 3D models does not mean anything. Look at the new Guilty Gear, completely 3D but sticking to what they know. Not saying SNK will mimic GG but theres a lot of roads they can take.

        As with my response to Patrick, I feel I must remind you that Playmore’s turnaround and dev time on major titles is significantly slow. Yes, I acknowledge there’s a chance this new 3D KoF COULD be good. But I think that chance is too small to take this kind of a risk, especially since Playmore is not as strong as SNK was in its heyday (and considering they were always fairly small, that’s saying something) and because their most recent attempts at 3D games have, well, stunk. Didn’t anyone on this site subject themselves to the shambling horror that is Samurai Shodown Sen?

      13 was pretty good, but IMO KOF could use the graphical evolution. I mean, sure, they’ve already tried 3D KOF, but they didn’t get the mechanics right that time. If they do now, the series will be all right. It’s now or never.

    That’s great news! At least for me. Hope it’s not actually Maximum Impact, but rather the first “true” 3D KOF, though. That meaning: keep the 2D gameplay intact, just like games like UMVC3 and GGXrd did.

      Well, the difference there is that MI was meant to be a “side thing”, much like SFEX was. It wasn’t meant to be a replacement.

      This, however, is looking to be the next definitive KOF game. Combine that with the other rumors that stated that SNKP was looking to be going back to 98′s style of play in 3D, and I see SNKP taking this with as much seriousness as Capcom did SF4.

    While i’d have greatly prefered a new 2D KOF, this is good news nonetheless. Looking forward to it.

    For the people already jumping at pessimist conclusions, please have some hope until we see a trailer, in-game footage or at least the designs of the characters, then if it looks bad please bash it to your heart’s content. Capcom made SF jump to 3D with the EX series but later made it right with SFIV (Besides Rival Schools being awesome), and the latest Guilty Gear is in 3D. It is possible to make visually appealing 3D graphics just like it’s possible to make a fighting game with 3D graphics and 2D mechanics.

        Is not a bad game but not a good game first thing is first a lot of characters were missing, and is not as easy to pull combos as the other king of fighters not to mention it was much slower, did you see Terry how big he looked ? To me it was an alright game but still lacks compare to many king of fighters games

          It has a great cast, and didn’t go for overkill as it’s hard to balance a massive cast and balance is what matters most. As for combos, they’re easy to pull off if you actually know what you’re doing. As for speed, it was the same speed as usual. Actually a bit faster on account of the Hyper Drive system. One of the best tournament fighters of the generation, and sure as hell beats out most of SNK’s other work.

            Well I do understand they cant add most of the characters from the older KOF and it does have some new awesome mechanics to the system but come on is not the best KOF and trust me I am a huge fan of the series KOF and TEKKEN are my main 2 fighting series after that comes ST and Virtua fighter ,Soul caliber ect lol

I’d much rather there be a smaller cast with very high quality sprite work and excellent balance where every single character is viable to the point that each and every one of them is a valid choice in tournament play. KOF 13 was a perfectly balanced game. Do you have any idea how hard it is for something like that to exist

            I’m with DaiRaiOh, King of Fighters 13 was an amazing game, and a pleasure to watch at Evo.
            It was a new engine, of course characters were missing, by KoF 2003 the roster was massive(On account of how old some sprites had gotten!). As for Terry…. it was a new style, you either loved it or hated it, in my case I loved it, Takuma standing like Doppo Orochi was awesome. Oh, and my gripe with Terry wasn’t his bulk… but the fact that he reverted to pre-Garou/MoTW, but I do understand they kinda went for his most iconic look.
            KoF 12 one the other hand was pretty lackluster, even the mechanics(Strong Punch/Kick counter thing) felt like last minute additions just for the sake of it. The fact that it came right after XI didn’t help it’s case.

    I’m really hoping to see a huge comeback from SNK. It’s actually nice to see them doing something again that’s not pachinko or mobile/social games.

    I really love the HD-2D sprites they made. I was really, really looking foward to see how it would look in Samurai Shodown and Metal Slug but I guess it will never happen ever.

    Just wish them the best of luck and hoping they won’t disappoint this time.

        Seriously, whenever I play KoFXIII I’m still as awed as the first day I had a chance to play it. I love SNK, and seeing them develop something of this caliber after lots of fans considered them done made me incredibly happy.

    Another 3D King of Fighters! It’s been a long time since the PS2 era. Just add the Metal Slug Characters back, like Marco and Fio, and I’d be alright with everything! Heck, add ALL CHARCTERS AND VILLAINS! Even Not-Hitler and the Mars People!

      yea no those OTHER characters are for Battle Colloquium and and CVS games and have no connection with the KOF series (the MS characters have been in the series for awhile though)

        The Metal Slug games are practically connected to the KOF/AoF/MoG/??????/etc series. So, I wouldn’t worry that most of them were used for the sillier crossovers before having something in the main games.

          I was, I really enjoyed MI2 on the PS2 and its sequel (never played the original MI on the Xbox, though). I am really looking forward to this; it’s going to be a new KOF game in ages… Someone in his 30s who’s seen the series from birth like me has to be super excited! Plus, there are many roads they can take, so I guess it’s too early to worry.

      There’s no reason to panic, after XII some fans were ready to drop the series and then XIII made it relevant once again. I’m not saying XIV will definitely be better than XIII, but since we know basically nothing about its gameplay, cast or art direction it’s far too soon to be negative.

    KoFXIII was absolutely wonderful, so I’m sure they will try their best to live up to the fanbase’s expectations with this sequel. Managing new assets and creating new characters will surely be easier, I just hope they nail the mechanics and art direction and are able to employ a better netcode.

      KOFXIII was great. They could honestly recycle all the sprites from that one and add more characters. Sure would beat starting from scratch again

        We went over why that still isn’t that possible. Those sprites the way KOFXIII does takes a very long time to do.

          Hand Drawn sprites takes a long time to do. But if the sprites are already done from KOFXIII… why not just reuse them and only draw new sprites for new characters?
          The reason they gave for KOF12 having too few characters was time constraints, so they just recycled all the people from KOF12 into 13 and added new guys. That’s how KOF13 had so many more people.

    also. ether way if it’s like Maximum Impact or GG Xrd a new KOF is coming and that’s better then nothing. personally i would like it to be like GG Xrd or like Chinese KOF Tencent Games’s (Xuan Dou Zhi Wang / King of Combat), but it matters not. what matters is that all consumers should pre-order, buy the game on day one, support SNK, and show SNKP that there is money to be made in video games(consoles, PCs). no matter what.

    I hope it’s not like Maximum Impact. Although I played the hell out of those, they weren’t very good. Also, Ryo’s design was terrible (see image). No more stretchy armed alien bosses, please.

      Man I really liked the Max Impact games so much fanservice and the plot was….interesting. Plus that Ryo design in MI2/2006 was based off his original look form Art of Fighting. You no like Art of Fighting?

        I think character designs definitely improved in the Orochi saga, and as graphics became better in general. If I was given the option to play Art of Fighting, ’98, 2002, XI, or XIII, Art of Fighting would definitely be my last choice.

    The most attractive feature with KOF is the 2D artwork. You take that away its not worth bothering anymore. SNK certainly keeps making a lot of questionable decisions.

    Hopefully it would be the long-awaiting sequel, KOFXIV! And hopefully it would be about Neo-NESTS where Krizalid taking over the throne itself. Also, adding all characters from Maximum Impact would be much awesome especially Alba Meira, Soiree Meira, Luise Meyrink and others! The return of the villainous Rugal as the true final boss would be a huge surprise!

        Nope, he was revived by original Zero and fights alongside him as a Striker in KOF 2001 tournament. What
        happened to him following the battle is unknown. He has yet to make another canonical appearance since then. So this is the best time and ultimate opportunity for him to be back as the main antagonist and ruled Neo-NESTS once again and taking over the throne itself like a boss with his new subordinates. It would be more awesome if he would return in the robotic appearance, Mecha-Krizalid. If I were one of the designers in KOF department, I would have make him as the final boss and fight him 2 times in 2 different forms. First, the Mecha-Krizalid and the final one is Psychotic Mecha-Krizalid.

        But Adelheid Bernstein isn’t that much of a villain and he is not like his father. He even cooperated with one of his father’s victims, Heidern, to get to the bottom of the plans of Those From the Past and he also tries to help the forces of good suppress the evil plans of Those From The Past. So, he is not a villain actually.

        Rugal is just like Sigma from Megaman X to be honest, because he’s so tenacious as f***ed and always keeps coming back from the dead for like 3 times? I wouldn’t be surprise if he returns in KOFXIV and he is also the producer’s most favorite boss ever. If you played KOF 2002 Unlimited Match (oh, how I miss this game so much), once you defeated Omega Rugal, during the ending scene, it was stated that “Omega Rugal become extinct…?’, there was even a question mark there. Without the question mark and with the question mark are 2 entirely different stories. So as you can see that a lot of KOF fans believes that the return of Rugal is actually happening and the revival of Rugal in KOFXIV or in the future KOF series.

        Imagine the infamous Devil Crime Lord, Rugal Bernstein, back once again to the world of living as the true final boss with his new bad-ass appearance and longer hair (http://fc00.deviantart.net/fs70/i/2011/354/6/4/omega_rugal_bernstein_by_jaredjlee-d4jqg8o.jpg), and face against Kyo Kusanagi, Iori Yagami, K’, Alba Meiraa, Soiree Meiraa, Luise Meyrink, Elisabeth Branctorche, Nameless, Rock Howard, Terry Bogard, Andy Bogard as well as Joe Higashi for one true final battle! If he ever returns in KOF XIV or in the future KOF series, I would have named him as ‘Devil Rugal’.

    Awesome news! They’ve done it right with KOF:Maximum Impacts years ago (for PS2), and I loved that game so much, so they only need to tweak it a bit. Bring on KOF 14!! Wohooo….

    Despite it’s not even confirmed that the game will be fully 3d, i just can’t stand people who desire a new Maximum Impact gay game, i mean… have someone of you ever played a KOF game before?
    3d doesn’t stand a chance with a fighting game that is meant for 2d, it’s just bad
    XIII is wonderful because it was a REAL comeback to the series, and if they don’t take advantage of the popularity that XIII has got making a dream match, then SNK can go f*ck themselves
