By Ishaan . August 23, 2014 . 2:00pm

In case it wasn’t already clear, Rise of the Tomb Raider will be released for both Xbox One and Xbox 360, Crystal Dynamics have confirmed via their Tomb Raider blog.

“We have a long history with Microsoft and they have been a very strong supporter of the franchise,” Crystal wrote. “They will help us grow and nurture the Tomb Raider franchise more than ever before.”

They add in another quote, “Our goal is to build the best game that we possibly can, and our relationship with Microsoft will help us realize our vision for the game.”

Rise of the Tomb Raider will be released for both Xbox platforms Holiday 2015. Details on the game are still scarce.

I have an Xbox 360 and PS4, but there’s no way I’m playing this on a last gen console. I’d rather buy an X1 or just wait for a PS4 release.

    • HarakiriKami

Whats so bad about playing it on the 360?

Long as its a good port I dont care.

Square cant be spending too much money on trying to max out the capabilities of the X1. Would rather they spend that money coding to the metal on the 360 then up porting everything to the X1.

      • subsamuel01

Nothing’s wrong with playing on a Xbox 360 if that was the only option. Content wise the game will probably be identical, but for an action adventure game like Tomb Raider I’d rather play the best possible version.

        • HarakiriKami

Are you going to buy an X1 for this game though? What if wont be on PS4?

          • darke

It’s a timed exclusive, and you can’t seriously believe they’ll only release it on the PS3, WiiU and Vita.

Given they’ve already released a version on the PS4, they’ve got most of the code path debugged and tested if they’re using the same engine.

And if they’re silly enough to have a “no PS4″ exclusion clause, then people can just get the PC version.

          • HarakiriKami

No it’ll be PC only. :P

  • mojack411

Even though I don’t own a Xbone or a PS4, I still kinda wish that Crystal Dynamics kept this to current gen platforms. The difference in quality between a made for current gen game and a cross gen game is quite significant and I would prefer that higher quality for when I eventually do get one of the consoles.

    • subsamuel01

Square has crazy expectations for this games sales, no way they would reach it on current gen only.

    • darke

They’re probably making a PC version as well, as is usual with timed exclusives, so the XB1 version will essentially be a cut-down version of that. Like how the PS4 version re-release of the last game was done.

It’s just they’ll have MS probably toss some effort into optimising it on the XB1 this time.

  • Josef217

lol so much ass kissing in those lines. I’m sure its stated on their contract to say that, I’ll wait for the ps4 and used, I won’t give my money to you CD for your bullshit. I’d get it on pc but I don’t want to give you my money CD :D

    • chaleb

That is exactly what I do to anti-consumerist companies. I bought battlefield 4 used, and now, I will by this used as well.

      • silverplat

Going by that logic you won’t buy anything from Microsoft and Sony again because they buy timed-exclusives often.

You have to buy used the likes of Transistor, No Man’s Sky to most other indie doing “console exclusive debut”, Grim Fandango too. Also Cuphead, Inside, Peggle 2, etc.

And that’s not mentioning exclusive DLC, extra content,
characters, etc. from games like Call of Duty or Disney Infinity.

        • chaleb

1.I will buy from Microsoft and Sony again because they have first party studios too. I won’t buy exclusive third party games/content new or at all.
          2. I especially hate timed exclusives and third party exclusives so that’s why I prefer Sony. Sony does less of this since they have more first party studios.
          3. Why do you question what I’m doing? It’s ultimately my choice what games I buy and it’s also yours for your games. I just hope you aren’t one of those people that buy EA games day-1.

    • Herok♞

Congrads by buying used on the Console they screwed over you are just giving them more justification to screw over the platform again.

    • ishyg

“I won’t give my money to you CD for your bullshit.”

I won’t call it bullshit if big money is involved. These guys need to earn too.

  • Nix da

Does anyone else get the feeling that they really want to assure themself that they did the right decision ?

    • darke

It’s another instance where they made a decision and then realised the scope of the bad press the decision has caused. Thus the quick “but it’s just a timed exclusive!” press release and recent back pedalling.

I’m guessing SE is worried that all the bad press is going to cause problems with sales of Temple of Osiris as well.

  • tturtlejosh

Wasn’t this game supposed to be next gen only? I won’t be buying day one

  • SprintsMcGee

Still not going to buy an X1 just to play this game. I’ll wait for the PS4 Definitive version, and if that doesn’t happen…oh well. I have enough in my backlog to keep me happy for years to come.

  • BinaryMind

So, why did Microsoft pay for timed exclusivity? Since it’s coming to 360, you can’t even call it a potential Xbox One system seller anymore.

    • subsamuel01

Most people would choose to play the game on current-gen consoles, Phil Spencer said it himself that they secured the IP to compete with Sony’s Uncharted.

      • darke

        But Uncharted 4 is a current-gen only title; not a current-gen-and-last-gen.

It’s also not a timed exclusive.

It feels more like they’re trying to fight against a strawman of Uncharted 4. “Look! We sold more of our games on the Xbox 360 and One then Uncharted sold on the PlayStation! Please pay attention to us again and buy our console!” >.<

    • British_Otaku

Nah, it will sell better on the Xbox One probably since they will be marketing the “next gen” factor so much and the Xbox One has had a year even with the install base difference. It will be another Titanfall or comparable to how Yakuza Isshin/Restoration, Watch Dogs and Ground Zeroes did in Japan.

      • randominternetperson

It can only be another Titanfall if it comes out on Xbox One FIRST delaying the 360 version.

        • British_Otaku

Siliconera thought it was worth an article to remind us that it is on the Xbox 360 as well, I’m sure most people won’t be aware of the 360 option or willing to accept it when the Xbox One really comes into it’s own next year.

I’ve also named examples of games on the PS4 which were close to or outselling their PS3 versions. I can name more games on the Vita or 3DS which are outselling their PS3 counterparts, but same difference.

Strong marketing for a platform while make one version dominate.

      • HarakiriKami

Watch Dogs sold pretty much the same on PS3 as it did on PS4.

        • British_Otaku

That still supports my point, there is a seventy million plus gap in their install bases. It wouldn’t be remotely close if people weren’t going “But the next gens, I don’t want to settle for less”.

          • HarakiriKami

            Uh… There’s only 8 million PS3′s sold in japan

          • British_Otaku

I was going by worldwide numbers, if you want me to use Japanese numbers only sure.

8 Million PS3 systems vs 665,760 PS4 systems in Japan.

A huge gap and still numbers have been close in many cases. Even for the Wii U side, Rayman Legends sold better on it than the PS3, PC and Xbox 360 systems first week in the UK.

As much as we like to talk about install bases, when they market a game strongly for a platform or a fanbase is passionate about one platform, it will do well there.

    • HitagiHanekawa

      Indeed, that’s just stupid lol

  • Max Leo

I thought they said the whole point of it being timed exclusive for Xbox One was to make the game as great as possible for the console, but now they are also working on an xbox 360 version?…..?

    • HarakiriKami

They were always working on a 360 version.

      Also 2 platforms > 5 platforms = better optimization

      • Max Leo

Yeah it appears so, but still it would be even better optimization if the 360 version didn’t hold them back, oh well, I don’t mind anyway.

        • HarakiriKami

Well they probably think there will be a greater return if they spent the money they could have sunk into coding Tomb Raider to the metal on the Xb1 and just made a really damn impressive 360 game and updated it to next gen on the Xb1 like Metal Gear Solid Ground Zeroes does

More money on 360 and Bone

    • subsamuel01

The point of the timed exclusive was Microsoft’s money and marketing. Square had insane sales expectations for the original, no way they would reach that without a last gen port.

      • Max Leo

Ah yeah of course, so when they said they did this because they want to make the best game possible, I’m guessing they meant the money from Microsoft will help them achieve that.

I mistook it as focusing on one platform for optimization. My bad.

        • subsamuel01

They sold 6 million copies and said it wasn’t enough, I guess Microsoft took some of the develop cost load off their backs in return for a marketing push and timed exclusivity.

          • HarakiriKami

Plus it being cross gen means they spend less money for a possible greater margin of return. (Spending AAA money on only one platform gets expensive.)

And they can fully optimize for the 360 and then up port that ala definitive edition to the XB1. or downport like they did with titanfall( which managed to be a better experience than screen tearathon titans on the Xbox 360 although it was 30fps lol)

  • Impressionnant

I’m more looking forward to their new top-down, in-the-vein-of-guardian-of-light Tomb Raider.

    • Slickyslacker

Yeah, Temple of Osiris is a sequel to Guardian of Light.

      • HarakiriKami

Whats that? What console is it on?

        • Impressionnant

Top-down action-puzzler. Guardian of Light was on ps3/360/pc.

        • darke

          Temple of Osiris is PS4/XB1/PC.
          Guardian of Light was PS3/360/PC.

  • Dave Cain

that lara faceshot is so hot

    • HarakiriKami

You like your girls dirty and barely visible?

  • ElliotRyan

They can’t throw us PC gamers a bone, here? I suppose we’ll just have to wait…

    • darke

I’m sure that the “best game” they can make will be once again have the best version on the PC.

Given it’s a “holiday 2015″ title, and there are usually more games released around than time that can be played in the available time, I’ll be fine with waiting a few months and having the PC version released in a less busy time.

Honestly the Temple of Osiris one is far more interesting to me anyway since it actually has the gameplay of the original Tomb Raider, which the remakes discarded in favour of cinematics.

  • leingod

    Xbox 360 too? ….that’s a shame.

    • triablos

Yes, fuck all those other people that haven’t been able to upgrade to next gen yet.

Fuck sales too, let’s not release on a console that has 10x the install base.

      • HarakiriKami

It’ll be like 2015 though. Lol.

        • triablos

First point still stands since people will upgrade for as long as anyone cares.

And right now xbox360 has like 20x the install base of the One. In 2015 it’ll become x10 when more people buy Ones.

That’s right folks, I know the future

Honestly the only legit complaint IMO would be that last gen is holding back next gen graphics and stuff.

      • leingod

I wouldn’t word it that way, but yeah. The current gen version will probably suffer because of it.

What can I say? I don’t really care about those who won’t be able to upgrade by 2015.

        • triablos

The most important part about releasing on last gen as well is sales. Tomb raider sold more copies than there are Xbox Ones out there, and SE expected more sales. Half of the buyers will probably be on last gen consoles.

          • leingod

I know, you’re totally right on that account. But when I said “a shame” I meant it on an entirely personal level. For me, who already made the leap to XBO, a game natively made for current hardware would’ve been a lot more appealing.

          • triablos

I haven’t upgraded yet (but I don’t plat TR so not really a big deal) its nice that last-gen games drop in price quick as hell now, especially the multigen ones.

  • Gosuke

    Xbox 360?Yess

  • Lloyd Christmas

So has it been confirmed this game is a timed exclusive on the Xbox and will eventually make its way to the PS4?

    • DemonShadowX

I still can’t really tell if it is timed or not. I believe whoever does their PR has confirmed it, but still no word on when it releases for any other platforms.

      • Loli Desu

Apparently it’s “exclusive” exclusive due to not selling well enough to produce a sequel otherwise a la bayonetta style.

        • HarakiriKami

          …. No.

It was gonna get made anyway. With or without MS’s help

    • ndjn3979

They would be stupid not to release a moneymaker like this as widely as possible.

Microsoft (possibly) gets extra sales on their platform, and Crystal Dynamics gets more attention to their game due to this issue.

      • HarakiriKami

        and it strengthens brand ties

    • triablos

Timed exclusive it is, confirmed by Microsoft

    • HarakiriKami

      No.

      PC ONLY

    • J_Joestar

It is only confirmed as a timed exclusive, but whether or not it will show up on a PS4 or just PC is up to SE when the period is over.

  • D. Collins

    KEH!!

  • Gryr

Sweet~! I won’t need to upgrade to a X1, I can just get this game on my 360~

  • ishyg

OK, so the sales that should have been if there were a PS4 release will be mitigated because of the 360 release. Good move, I guess?
