Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate Introduces Its Own Take On Delayed Wake Ups

By Sato . August 27, 2014 . 2:49am

Capcom’s previous episode of the video series showing Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate’s new features showed us the new and improved Charge Blade. In the fourth installment, they show more of the cooperative aspects that we’ll see in the upcoming game.

The video begins with producer Ryozo Tsujimoto and director Kaname Fujioka giving us another look at the player-assisted jumping attack feature. Next, they put their cooperative skills to use against the shark-like amphibious monster, Zamtrios.

At 2:50, we see that Fujioka’s character is paralyzed, but after being launched into the air by Tsujimoto’s Hammer, he is still able to land a nice jump attack.

A new action feature in Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate lets you get up quicker after being knocked down by an enemy. At the 3:37 mark, we get to see what it looks like, with a faster rise on the left and a slower one to the right.

Sometimes you might want to stay down a little longer, or you might need to get up quicker at other times, so depending on the situation, you’ll have a choice to do one or the other. However, your character will automatically get up at some point, so you can’t stay down forever.

Another new feature is the auto-chat, that lets you set phrases to activate on certain moments. For example, you can have your character say “I’m on!” once you get on top of a monster, or “Sorry!” when you get incapacitated.

These features were introduced to help players communicate and cooperate more easily with each other, which sounds like it’ll be pretty helpful for taking on the difficult G-rank quests that will come with Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate.

As a last message for the fans, Fujioka says that some people have asked whether Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate will be much tougher, to which he replies that there’s plenty that can’t be experienced outside of G-rank, and the game itself will have much more to offer than Monster Hunter 4.

Monster Hunter 4 Ultimate is slated for release in Japan on October 11, 2014, and in the West in early 2015 for Nintendo 3DS.

Food for thought:

1. It’s interesting how Monster Hunter is borrowing features liberally from other genres to fit into its own unique mechanisms. Specifically, in this case, the feature that lets you hasten or delay your recovery after a fall seems similar to the delayed wake-ups introduced in Ultra Street Fighter IV. When he spoke to Siliconera, director Kaname Fujioka did say he wasn’t against borrowing ideas that work well in general.

2. Another interesting point to note is that producer Ryozo Tsujimoto has compared Monster Hunter to fighting games in the past.

Basically an oki-zeme mechanic? Makes me wonder if you’ll now be extra vulnerable for lying on the floor to compensate for delayed-wakeup ability , kind of like Soul Calibur or other 3D fighters.

  • Jadfish

Man I hope they introduce Red Focus too! I wanna eat a Tigrex charge attack right to my face while I’m charging up a greatsword swing!

    • Exkaiser

With the lance, you can already do this!

  • Land of Green Pasture

now I can launch people without sorry… it’s pretty sad that I’ll still trip people with LS tho… except if it gets to launch another player too…

    • You damn LS users…

      • Land of Green Pasture

        ha! got any problem?

  • triablos

When I read the title I thought monsters wouldn’t wake straight after being sent to sleep. So many times I’ve shot sleep s at monsters, and while they’re falling I accidentally shoot another which wakes it up before it even begins sleeping.

This is cool too though. Will it affect invincibility frames when down?

  • Helios373

hmm, interesting, lets wait to see how this is going to be. I think its is going to be good, when the monster is in the middle of a combo and you dont want to get hit again and get stunned.

  • Skeledon

“Delayed wake-up.” I’m sorry, this mechanic sounds so stupid. This ISN’T a fighting game so they should leave shit like that out of MH. Seriously, you should be PUNISHED for sleeping on the floor, NOT REWARDED WITH INVISIBLE FRAMES.

    • Tarkovsky

I take it that you’ve played 4G or 4U? If not, wait until the game comes out before giving judgement. I also don’t think you realize how DWU works. If it’s going to be anything like USFIV, delaying your wake up at the wrong time will still get you wrecked. It’s skill and time based. You’re not going to be able to just lay there for one full min.

      • Skeledon

I don’t play fighters, so I’m not sure how DWU works. I’ll take your word for it, though.

    • HarakiriKami

…. lol did you forget that monhun and dark souls combat is very similar to fighting games rhythm?

      • Skeledon

        In what way?

    • Wyverian

      Shhhhh. Just let it happen.

    • 하세요

With the cheap, unavoidable cross-ups that some monsters have in MH4? Yeah right, I think I deserve delayed wake-up. Brachydios has some cheap shit this time around when raged. Even with Eva +3 and Evasion Distance+, there are some follow-ups you simply cannot avoid.

Don’t like it? Don’t get it. I for one will embrace this.

    • Namuro

Once, I was almost rushed to death by a low-rank Tigrex when I was stuck in a corner. It had a really perfect timing then, able to rushed me the moment I got up and floored me over and over and over… I think it’s already punishing enough as it is, seriously…

Though it rarely happens (at least to me), but cheap shots like that can still happen and leave you helpless. This delayed wake up is actually a very great idea, as it gives the players a fighting chance to get out of sticky situations like that.

I bet a lot of players have had similar experience, which resulted in the addition of this new feature. They mentioned that they took feedbacks from the players to improve the game, otherwise, I don’t think they would just make this minor tweak out of nowhere.

By the way, it’s INVINCIBLE frame, not invisible. Look up the difference in the dictionary.

      • Exactly, that new mechanic is supposed to even the playing field. I died EXACTLY like that the first time I played MHFU with Tigrex. They’ll roflstomp you if you fell at the wrong time/spot.

        • Namuro

Ah, I remembered my first encounter with Tigrex. I was really scared of his charging move, so I tried to snipe him with the Light Bowgun from the slightly elevated platform in area 6 of the Snowy Mountain, since he couldn’t charge up the platform.

          …Then he one-shot me with the rock-projectile move…LOL

    • Elfaia

We already have an auto version of that in MH3. Light and heavy knockdown.

    • decus

Have you ever done G-rank hunts? The monster speed boosts meant they could do insane things like multiple way-faster-than-normal hip checks in a row. The timing was such that if one hip check hit, you were going to eat at least two if not more because the character got up way too fast.

Basically, to put it another way, the game was PUNISHING you way too much for getting up quickly, which you couldn’t control. Now you can delay it ever so slightly to avoid what was once unavoidably double damage. Getting auto-stunlocked is never fun.

  • Namuro

Oh damn! That’s pretty sweet! Surely, this will come in handy in so many situations…

I actually wanted something like this (though, I didn’t give it a serious thought), glad to see that they actually made it a reality! I bet this delayed wake up was implemented because of the feedbacks from the fans!

    • s07195

Yeah, those times when you get attacked the moment you leave your frames of invincibility after you got up were annoying.

  • I love how each series “evolves” the gameplay…. I can’t wait for this to release… my 3DS will be on charger support lol.

  • Guillermo Oliva III

Hmmm…. I like changes and this game has went through a huge change within the main series, so to complain over one change like this is just childesh and completely selfish to me that I for one do not mind and there are many thoughts and troubles that may like this or see this fitting. Also, it is just completely silly to complain about this minor change if so MANY things within the MH series has been changed….. like, seriously…. stop.

  • Draparde

The auto chat reminds me of PS:P2/PSO2, i loved setting up stuff for those games.

  • 60hz

I bet he evolution of MH has been accelerated by all the new competitors in the hunting genre (Freedomwars, Toukiden, Soul Sacrifice etc…)

  • GOLD

    Dat Greatsword….

  • Ric Vazquez

    Hype intensifies

  • Vash bane

multiplayer looks fun I guess I need to get into that so I can enjoy monhun better :)

  • lordrockman

I swear on me life one time icemannoob was hunting a Zinogre and it did a combo!
Stunned against a wall into Air Pressure into Headbutt!! i thought i was watching street fighter!!
