Pokken Tournament Won’t Use High/Mid/Low Guard Mechanics

By Ishaan . August 27, 2014 . 10:02am

Yesterday, after The Pokémon Company’s announcement of Pokkén Tournament, Bandai Namco’s Tekken producer Katsuhiro Harada took to Twitter to answer a few questions about the game, and EventHubs took the time to translate his replies.

Regarding whether or not Tekken characters would make guest appearances in Pokkén Tournament, Harada confirmed once more that this will not be happening.

“As we’re making a Pokemon fighting action battle game, I’ve already touched on this while on the livestream, but in this game there will not be a high/mid/low guard system mechanic,” Harada added. “Instead, we’re planning to include a new type of [mechanic]…”

Harada also addressed the fact that the only Pokémon we’ve seen teased for Pokkén Tournament so far—Lucario, Blaziken and Machamp—are humanoid in nature, stating that adding non-humanoid Pokémon to the game shouldn’t be a problem at all.

“Technologically-speaking, we shouldn’t face any problems in implementing whatever Pokemon we want,” Harada said. “In terms of the system mechanics, we’ll be looking at what fans would want, so please rest assured.”

On the official website for Pokkén Tournament, Harada also said the goal for the game is to turn it into a fighter that players who don’t typically play fighting games would enjoy. You can read his thoughts on the game here.

Well this interesting. I know Pokemon always has the Miss and Evasion factor. Maybe that will be added instead of High/Mid/Low? Like, a Normal hold back to block and then perhaps an evasion counter system of some kind? I can totally see that for sure.

    • AndyLC

Miss/evasion factor is how a turn based game represents slow moving attacks like gigantic balls of energy and heavy swinging punches. A real time game can easily implement that by having attacks with a long windup

ex: Captain Falcon’s Falcon Punch would be one of those low accuracy mega hard hitting moves if it was in Pokemon

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

so pretty much they will be using the move Protect and Detect to block

  • DesmaX

    Magikarp please

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

Pokemon’s crossing with Tekken, not Street Fighter. Street Fighter uses high/mid/low buttons but rather four limbs. Even if Pokken doesn’t play exactly like Tekken, it has to have some form of Tekken within gameplay in order to be compared to Tekken. The trailer music already feels like Tekken.

  • Hound

“stating that adding non-humanoid Pokémon to the game shouldn’t be a problem at all.”

    Metapod and Magikarp confirmed?

    • Hagaren

Magikarp as a lethal joke character. Knows only Splash but when receiving enough damage it becomes Gyarados.

      • Hound

Pfft.. Just use flail after getting hurt for instant win.

      • Shinyhunter7

Wait, no, like.. What if that was magikarp’s super? Recieve enough damage/flail around and splash enough, and then you can evolve and start murdering shit.

EDIT: And then do it again as gyrados to become mega, lol.

        • Hound

Is magikarp suddenly a Digimon? o.o

          • Shinyhunter7

            Who knows, lol.

        • Hagaren

That would be cool. Can’t wait to see what they have in store for us!

    • Renaldi Saputra

      everyone forgot Kakuna

  • TheBlackKnight3

It’s a Machamp in the trailer, not Machoke.

  • Hagaren

If they put Ursaring in this game they should give it a red scarf like Tekken’s Kuma.

    • J_Joestar

Might as well give Pangoro colored bangles/bracelets too

  • Renaldi Saputra

but, if there are ghost pokemon, then it will break the rule…

take example for gengar vs lucario
and then lucario used some Fighting type moves, it won’t affect gengar

    • Adrian Duran

      Maybe this Lucario knows Foresight?

Using a Dragon move on a Fairy type however is breaking the rules.

Though there are ways to use a Ground move on a Flying type.

      • Renaldi Saputra

I guess they won’t look at any pokemon rules for this game. They just wanna make fighting game with pokemon, that’s all

    • Metalsnakezero

I bet they’ll ignore certain mechanics like that but important ones that do work in a fighting game setting.

      • pokeroi

I wonder if they will implement typing mechanism or not, If they do, it will be hard to balance, but pretty fun

    • Kevin

They could just use the mechanics from the card game since ghost types are only not affected in the video game by fighting moves

  • Guillermo Oliva III

    I wish the final boss would be “Mewtwo —> Mega Evo —- > > Mewtwo X” :D

  • 하세요

    But my mix ups! ;=;

  • pokeroi

cannot not wait to play as Electrod XD Gameplay must be very interesting.

  • DudeJericho

    Magikarp will be so op

  • wailord confirmed

    • 하세요

Wailord should be a damn stage.

      • Dunno, it could be an MvC Apocalypse/Galactus type giant boss.

    • XypherCode

      That’s seriously OP.

  • AndyLC

Imagine a game where Koffing has a crouching guard :o

    • JustThisOne

I guess it’d be something like a face plant.

    • XypherCode

Face down and mouth closed probably.

Sounds like a recipe for a novelty game, its just like my CC2 fighting games! oh WAIT, even jojo had high and low atleast

    • Byron Kerrison II

Hopefully it’s not as broken as the Storm series. =D

  • AuraGuyChris

Eww. Lucario has black fur on its legs? That’s new to me…

    • Namuro

How did you not notice that before? LOL

      Also, what’s wrong with black?

      • AuraGuyChris

It was obvious that was black skin and not some sort of super slick fur. Brawl for example made it clear that the black streaks are black skin and everything else is fur.

Nothing wrong with black. Just pointing out the color.

    • Nanashrew

      You dare insult Anubis?!

  • Busted

    Non-humanoids that would be great additions hmmmm.. Metagross, Haunter, Probopass to fight with its noses and move levitating, of course all the bipedal beast/like pokemon (that you could call humanoid i guess) like Nidoking, Aggron, Tyranitar, Rhydon, Drapion, other pokemon who fight like PInsir, Escavalier, Krookodile, Garchomp and of course Mega Ledian OP, ahhh it has so much potential characters it will probably end up being a let down with like 20, poor me ;_;

  • Shippoyasha

Makes wonder if it’s going to hinge on some level of universal block system…. kind of like Mortal Kombat?

    • J_Joestar

maybe “Protect”? only a handful of Pokemon can’t learn it.

  • 60hz

    a voot-like would be cool

  • Namuro

Nice, I thought they were just going to include humanoid-shape, or Fighting-type Pokémon only.

  • Joshua

I want Gardevoir. And it’s ultimate attack should be a Mega Evo with Hyper Voice. Also, it might not be a bad idea to include Pokemon like Meloetta or something.

    • ShadowDivz

i dont want people beating up my gardevoir waifu.

    • J_Joestar

Meloetta with a stance/form-change fighting style would be pretty cool.

    • BalmungX

I want Sylveon,in the name of the moon i shall punish you!!

  • I guess it depends on how it’s executed. Something like Dissidia didn’t use a system like that. It was mostly block or evade. Block against Brave, Dodge against HP, counter both efficiently.

  • Jadfish

As long as they don’t put in any pokemon who can’t fight physically and have to rely on projectile bu**sh**, I’m fine with whatever

I’m also interested in how they tackle the element weaknesses. It would be horrible for a fighting game, but this is pokemon so it should at least be adressed or something

  • Gigaknight

“…stating that adding non-humanoid Pokémon to the game shouldn’t be a problem at all.”

To express myself a bit more eloquently, I honestly hope Pikachu does not make an appearance here (that is, if the roster will be limited–which I am certain it is, as 719 Pokémon would be a horribly tall task for the devs). Ever since I started playing Pokémon I’ve always believed that the game was more than just Pikachu–that if Pikachu wasn’t there all the time (which, for me, it was not), it’d do just fine on its own merits. A game like this would absolutely survive if Pikachu is not included in the roster–those who’d be likely to play/buy this game don’t need Pikachu to recognize this as a Pokémon game, or to make it more likable.

That aside, I can’t say I like the idea of the H/M/L mechanic disappearing. Seems it’ll make fights a bit too simple. (In general, I was hoping for something like Soul Calibur 2 and/or Bloody Roar: Primal Fury.) Even so, hopefully their mechanic will make up for this and still be fun.

    • Tienron

hes the mascot of the poke verse, he will be in there one way or another

      • Guest

get perfects in every match and the last boss gets replaced?

      • Gigaknight

That sort of thinking is exactly the problem. “He’s the mascot; he HAS to be in the game.” Why? For what other reason than “he’s the mascot” does Pikachu have to be in this game?

That aside, I’d not be averse if his face adorned a punching bag, or the like.

    • ZnTxn

Hopefully they’ll put Raichu… who am I kidding, they always ignore Raichu :(

      • Gigaknight

You’re completely right about their ignoring Raichu. The Light Ball is a testament to that.

Even then, Raichu would be more fitting than Pikachu.

  • Heartlesswithaheart

Interesting. I hope this doesn’t mean they’ll use the universal block button system like Mortal Kombat, but I’ll hold off on judging until I see what they do.

  • JustThisOne

I’m going to assume they’ve all got to be a similar-ish height for hitbox reasons though, haha. Whether there’s high, mid, low or not, it’d suck to have a certain mon’s punch whiff every time.

  • RunningWild1984

So it’s pretty much gonna be exactly like Dragon Ball Z Budokai? Since there’s no High/Mid/Low mix-ups in those games, the game will probably have you rely more on stuff like unblockables, feints, evades, and throw type moves.

  • God

So it’s based on what the fans want? Then Pikachu is gonna be the most OP like no one ever was!!!… I’ll fly myself out…

    • Princess_Eevee9

Not fully Evolved Pokémon can shine? Yay plz.

  • Phoenixian Sama

I’d like to see a game with depth. Not like, tekken depth, but in the same way that smash bros is both easy to play for new comers, but has a tonne of depth for advanced players to discover. If its being handled by the tekken/SC guys, I reckon they can pull it off.

  • Something tells me this game could also utilize Pokemon’s Rock-Paper-Scissors system. Also guard crushes with it.

    • XypherCode

If they implement the typing mechanism then as a fighting game, balancing the game will take a huge load of time (years?) if you also consider the number of pokemon they’re gonna put in the roster and their individual attributes. Water versus Fire is kinda unfair in a fighting game.

  • ishyg

    Magikarp and Wailord FTW!

  • Black Heaven

    A wild speculation has appeared!

It may be possible that they might implement an auto-guard (they have that kind of setting in Tekken, just don’t move) but with added pokemon typings.
Attacks you do to a opponent doing ‘Not very effective’ damage will be auto-guarded, like fighting type moves against psychic type opponents.

While that may bring all kinds of imbalance in the game, I trust they’ll give the pokemon roster a wide variety of move types. For instance Lucario, adding TMs and egg moves, he has moves for psychic, steel, dragon, ghost, rock, ground and dark in addition to his generally fighting moves. So that gives enough variety. They could also add a neutral type, kinda like normal, but can also hit ghost types and they can be the generic punch and kick attacks.

That’s just my thoughts, I’m not game dev so if I’m sure they could do better mechanics that what I just conjured just now. >_<

    • s07195

Problem is that comes with people spamming the same move…While it works in Pokemon, I imagine that wouldn’t be quite fun.

    • Xeon2

Probably, it would be impossible to balance that unless the game is done TTT style, in which it may be brilliant. I’m not sure, but I don’t think its simply auto guard. On the other hand, this guard system works because smaller fighters will not have an advantage hitbox and mess with the high low mechanics, meaning any pokemon’s pretty much fair game.

  • I understand it and don’t necessarily hate it but this does diminish my hype a little bit that it might not be considered a legitimate fighting game. Hopefully its still fun but eh, not what I expected.

    • XypherCode

Just think of it as battling with Pokemon with real-time moves and actions rather than turn-based like with the traditional games. I think that’s what they’re going for here. They did say they wanted it more to be an action game with competitive/fighting game elements.

      • That’s what I was thinking of at first but, my mind keeps going back to one game when I think of that. It being Monster Rancher 2. Of course I don’t expect it to play like that with moves based on what distance you are and how much stamina you have but for some reason I keep thinking it like that.

But, yeah I will try to think of the best of it. There are some other games I can think of that kinda played like this but I can’t think of them at the moment. The ones I did play were neat though.

  • keithmaxx

    Magikarp confirmed!

  • Michael Chen

I might just see Ditto in this game. Really expecting Sceptile or Swampert to be in this game though.

  • Don

probably something like the Gundam VS games

  • ArcadiaSymphonia

I’m excited for this game, only thing i wonder if it will be exclusively fighting type pokemon in the game? I really would love to see dragonite or tyranitar in the game also along with mewtwo. 2nd will pokemon with mega evolutions like lucario be able to use their mega forms. and third will there be costumes or a tag mode but my top 5 for the game would be hawlucha, pikachu, snorlax, clefable, and greninja

  • Anyone else think size difference is going to be a big deal? Small pokemon are going to be irritating as shit to fight against

    • Gigaknight

This is one of the reasons why I don’t want to the usual cute Pokémon included. They’re usually heads shorter than the stronger/less-cute types more fit for this kind of game (e.g., Jigglypuff).

Even if there won’t be an H/M/L mechanic, attacks will (should) still whiff if they go clean over their heads. And it’d just be extremely poor form to have a character that short with a hitbox twice their size or more (imagine hitting the air above said Jigglypuff and still seeing it flinching).

  • So there would be no Down/crouch button? Might as well take the jump button away
