Teddie Warns Fans Not To Spoil Persona 4 Arena Ultimax’s Story, Or Else…

By Sato . August 27, 2014 . 12:45am

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax will be released soon, but Atlus wants to make sure all the fans can experience the game to its fullest, so they got Shadow Teddie to warn people about spoiling the game’s story, otherwise you might end up suffering some mysterious consequences…

On the official website, there’s a Teddie popup that has him saying that he strictly forbids spoilers about the game’s story. He has prepared all kinds of curses for those who break the rule. Here’s just few of the many consequences spoilers will have:

  • This curse will have you stuck on the edge of the screen, and you’ll never be able to free yourself from there for eternity.

  • Another curse would make your guards go off by “accident” each time, and you’ll forever be back-stepping.

  • You’ll continue getting some sort of fan mail at surprising numbers, that won’t ever stop day or night.

On a more serious note from Atlus, they ask all fans to please refrain from posting story spoilers on video sharing websites, streaming services, Twitter and other social media networks.

Sharing video footage that’s not from Atlus is strictly forbidden, as they’d like to have as many fans possible enjoy the game to its fullest, and ask for your help to help make that happen.

Persona 4 Arena Ultimax will be released in North America on September 30, 2014 for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360.

For those who don’t get it, here is the reason: The Japanese dislike spoilers and they do everything in their power to prevent people from spoiling things.

  • Impressionnant

I wonder what it feels like to play a Persona game without having it spoilt.

    • ThatGuy3190_7

An amazing experience. Persona 3 Portable was my first Persona game and I played that game without knowing a thing about the story or characters. Best video game experience ever. As for Persona 4, it wasn’t spoiled too much for me, just that I found out about Naoto’s true gender. Even still, she remained my top 3 P4 character and I still enjoyed my experience. :)

    • 하세요

I was able to play Persona 4 blind. Got the bad ending because LOL good luck getting the questions at “that point” right on your first try.

I almost had P3P fully blind, then a friend was all “Oh man I love that game, until-” *says ending*

Well, shit. “Oh sorry, I thought you already beat it” “THIS GAME JUST CAME OUT, WHO ASSUMES THAT.”

    • Arz

Mine was totally uncalled for. I was casually talking to my friend whom I borrowed the P4G at the time and he casually tells me who the culprit is . To be fair he thought I already knew but come on.

    • I got really lucky, I played P3P and P4 blind, the only thing spoiled for me was that the final P4 boss was an “asspull” as they called it.

I realized how blessed I was back then.

    • Superior Spider-Man

It’s amazing. Like playing Final Fantasy VII without being spoiled or watching Empire Strikes Back without certain knowledge.

  • Shippoyasha

Some unscrupulous sites already are posting spoilers already. Good for Atlus for calling it out. But really, avoiding P4AU topics online altogether is the safer bet.

    • colorblindnightmare

If not a slightly difficult one :p

  • Dat face though. It’s like Teddie is going to rip someone a new one, haha

As an avid fighter against spoiler-type material, I really wish those 3 bulletpoint curses were actually legit… wait, what am I saying? Anything is possible in the TV World (Persona of all things done proved that). Go ahead, Shadow Ted. Have a field day cursing spoiler posters. Palpatine encourages you…

  • colorblindnightmare

Wow. Those nerfa for posting spoilers. On a side note, does this pic of Shadow Teddy make you think he looks more like a gorrilla than a bear?

  • MrJechgo

Hey, here’s a better idea to avoid that:

Geez… just post-pone the Japanese release so it would come out on the same day as the North American release.

    • ThatGuy3190_7

I believe we’re receiving it late because Japan is getting PS3 only version while North America is receiving both PS3 and 360. With that aside, while it seems like a good suggestion, you seem like an entitled whiner. Persona Q has been released in Japan for about 2 months now and there are barely any spoilers on the internet unless you really search for it.

      • MrJechgo

My point is that they said the same exact warning when P4A was about to be released in Japan. Now they are doing it again.

Sounds like if you don’t want to get spoiled, then work harder to have everything come out on the same day, be according to the Japanese or the North American release. For Europeans, they should kick whatever butt they need to get it there ASAP.

        • ThatGuy3190_7

You never stated your point about P4A until now. Also, same day release isn’t as possible as everyone seem to think. Sure a company like Nintendo can pull it off when it comes to a popular franchise that everybody world-wide enjoys, such as Pokemon. With Persona 4 Arena Ultimax, it isn’t as easy as it sounds because of the dubbing, net codes for online play, and other aspects that comes with localizing a game, as well as the size of the localization team and other projects they have to simultaneously work on. Finally, if people do not want to be spoiled, it is best for them to stray away from the topic as much as possible once it is released instead of whining and complaining about same day release.

          • MrJechgo

I honestly thought you knew about P4A’s warning from last time. Also, I don’t see the problem of having a game released in Japan with dual-audio, as in the dub is done and burned in the disc.

P4AU could have gotten dual-audio in every region, without being bothering or such.

Sure, more work, but the results aren’t catastrophic by any means…

          • Afternoon Intergalactic

AFAIK, the JP/Asian release does have dual audio, but the text is still in Japanese.

          • ThatGuy3190_7

I didn’t know about P4A’s warning about spoilers when it was released.

As for dual-audio, while it is widely clamored for, there is also the issue of the budget put into the game. While Atlus is a great company, it doesn’t have the expenses to do such a thing often or at all with the whole Index Corp fiasco and not quite striking out as an independent company. When a localization company buys the rights of publishing, Japanese voice acting is an optional expense, and from I’ve researched, it is a pretty hefty expense to include it with a game with English dubbing. Now, a localization company can choose not to dub a game in its native language, but at the same time it risks potential buyers deciding not to purchase the product because the voices are not in its native language. A recent example is Xblaze: Code Embryo release in NA. While it is a part of the popular Blazblue universe, it didn’t sell too well, one of the factors being that it was Japanese dub only. While it catered to the audience that often professes “Japanese dub is superior, English dub sucks” buyers, it turned away those who wanted to play it in their native language, and with the small yet vocal minority winning out, the majority yet overly silenced because of bashing lost out, resulting in poor sales. This is part of the localization business or a minor brief summary of the localization process. Sorry if this is too long or if I got off-topic.

They care about their Persona fanbase specially P3/4.

        • 하세요

When the hell was the last time they cared for P1/P2.

        • ThatGuy3190_7

Ever considered that maybe the other non-Persona or Shin Megami Tensei games are over and done with and the creators and Atlus did not want it to be a lengthy series? Granted, I’d be surprised if they release a new Trauma Center game. Shin Megami Tensei IV was released last year. Announcement for the next Shin Megami Tensei is a bit too soon. They haven’t forgotten about Persona 1 and 2, after all, they are a part of what makes the Persona series. Each Persona game gives a mention to their predecessor title. Also, Persona 1 and 2 wasn’t directed by the same folks that are doing P3/P4, and P1 and P2 both had satisfactory endings while P3 and P4 had always left some things that could be expanded upon.

          • MrTyrant

Main numbered SMT could wait but another spin off could have been released. Devil Summoner 2 was released a couple of month after Persona 4 in japan and after that we got Devil Survivor and Strange journey while they were releasing Persona ports. The only thing we hear about lately is Persona. Suddenly we have a wave of Persona games or stories about P4/3, even if the staff working in some of them are different.
I waiting for Devil Survivor Break code while another Survivor or Devil summoner or whatever.

          • ThatGuy3190_7

The reason they are focusing on Persona 3/4 is because of the recent Index Corp fiasco and its aftermath. Atlus had lost a lot of money and in order to keep afloat to work on more projects, they turned to P3/P4 because they have been proven to be the company’s most popular and well-received releases. If they were to release other games part of the SMT franchise and not focus on P3/P4 spin-offs (though I wouldn’t necessarily call them as such since they officially announced that they are canon games with the exception of Dancing All Night), they wouldn’t make much money back from what they had lost from Index Corp. The recent release and promotion of PQ, P4AU, and P4DAN are merely build ups to the long-awaited Persona 5, as well as bringing in much needed profit to keep the company and its division afloat, despite the fact that they have been taken in by Sega.

And as much as I am still anticipating Devil Survivor 2 Break Record or another Devil Survivor entry, they are held responsible for and handled by another division within Atlus and not by the team that works on P3/P4. After all, I’m sure we hadn’t forgotten that they had announced last year that Break Record would be released this year. Hopefully we’ll see something at TGS next month.

          • LightZero

DAN is confirmed canon too. I highly doubt that BR is coming out this year. EO2:U and DAN are set for this year. I get the feeling that P5 is pushed back to early 2015 for Japan. BR is more likely to come out next year. Personally I hope we do hear something new about a Devil Survivor 3 or a new Devil Summoner. I’m also all for another megaten spin-off title as well.

          • ThatGuy3190_7

I’m still confirming the release for P5 to be winter 2014 unless officially announced. I’m not one to make baseless theories or claims and would much rather see, hear, experience myself what a company has to say and deliver. Personally, it’s more enjoyable that way for me, to not know of something fully and not to be fully wrong before the answer or result is delivered.

I’m not really familiar with the Devil Summoner series aside from the 2 Raidou games and Soul Hackers, but I do welcome a new addition at any time down the road. I also welcome a completely new title to the SMT staple, like SMT: Demon Warriors, where we play as the demons themselves in whatever interesting scenario Atlus comes up with.

Also, here is the article about Break Record being released this year, though I do agree it seems unlikely that it will be released by the time October rolls around.

          • MrTyrant

The division is not something I would take seriously. The company is still one with its own budget but if they lack of it they would only rely on the team that produce more money and that is persona team. They said that the division would improve the development of more games and blabla but they ended up just releasing more Persona games only. As far I can see the division didn’t help to games outside persona.

Another thing Is that according to some sources the Dance game is still canon in P4/P3 universe.

  • ParrotProphet

I just shrug since the last game’s story was nothing to write home about really. We also got a BIG WARNING from…Elizabeth, right?

From what I’ve already heard about this game, if I find myself buying it at some point I won’t be playing the story mode. Complete waste of time.

  • Rawindra

which means wait until tomorrow’s release in Japan.

Yeah, that’s why I said half. But not knowing which one can still save some of the suspense.
At least in BlazBlue you can be spoiled everything without problem because the entire thing doesn’t make any sense

          • MrTyrant

P4U Arena didn’t make much sense to me neither. I would feel more devasted if I get spoiled a long rpg but I cannot deny that still ruins part of the fun in P4U.

          • Shippoyasha

I liked P4A’s story even with some of its faults. I think people are too hung up about canon implications to let their hair down with this series and just try to enjoy it.

          • MrTyrant

Ooh Im not saying is shit or something like that. I enjoyed the story too. It wasn’t that bad compared to most fighting games out there. I think it’s a good trait.

  • revenent hell

When things like this are done I tend to appreciate that they want people surprised and ask others not to share the information BUT at the same time I tend to resent it as well.

I think if people want to be “spoiled” or not its up to them. I’m the type that doesn’t mind spoilers because seeing it or reading it is entirely different from playing it, yet sometimes I prefer to know nothing going in to a game.

Honestly I kind of think its up to the person whom will play the game whether they should be spoiled or not by story stuff.

    • MinakoArisato

The thing is, you can get spoilered easily without wanting it.

      • revenent hell

The thing is if people don’t want to be spoiled they should know better than to head in to a comments section about the topic of said game and have no one to blame for being spoiled other than themselves because open areas like this, or even marked ones, will most likely have someone that mentions spoilers of the game.

In my view its the own persons fault for not being aware, others shouldn’t have to protect them unless its a specific place marked for NON spoilers.

Its the internet if people are going to be completely oblivious of their own actions of what they are doing when they go in to said topics they kind of deserve being spoiled in my opinion.

Its easy to avoid spoilers if a person really wants to go in to a game blind.

        • MinakoArisato

          I get your point.
But I like the idea, though. A Teddie-Curse…

        • Saphira

From what I’ve read somewhere, Atlus actually always gives warning to not spoil the story… um… here:
“Atlus posts this kind of warning at the release of each of their Persona games, they even posted one for P4U, which had almost no really spoilers that the opening didn’t give away already anyway, and they posted, like, three for P4, including one which was included in the game itself, but taken out of the English localization.”

Anyway, I disagree about it being ‘easy’ to avoid spoilers. There are already P4AU spoilers floating around in my Facebook page and Tumblr Dashboard right now… and it’s hard to avoid accidentally reading them as I scroll down. Thankfully, I haven’t been spoiled with anything major yet, though I’ve seen some images… not really super spoilery, but still >.<

Also, to add, here's the reason for their warnings from the same source of the post above:
"Those 'spoilers' especially refer to video sites, such as Youtube or NicoNico, where everyone could stumble upon the videos simply due to shown previews."

  • Hound

Hm.. This makes me wonder what would happen if a big game company requested that all fans create fake spoilers and spoiler images for the evolution of humanity to divine greatness..

    • Guillermo Oliva III

There is nothing divine or great about spoilers and fakes are just as worse to tease the enjoyment that a story-line was made for those to find interest and progress as they play, read, or watch. Over all, it is a lame and a complete downer for anyone to spoil something that they spend their time to find out on their own ,than being told from beyond their progress.

      • Invisbin

Depends. If someone spoils an ending for be I don’t care because then I’m more hype for the events that lead up to said spoiler. Now if the climax was spoiled, I’ll constantly wonder how something ended.

In Short, spoilers aren’t as bad as people make them to be, but they can also contribute to hype.

        • Guillermo Oliva III

Well, I can understand your point at a certain extent ,but what makes spoiler so poopy is…. if you did not know about the climax or the ending…….. would you rather have your reaction be saved for this “WOAH!!!!!!!!!!! WTF?! I DID NOT EXPECT TO SEE THAT! XD” or this “oooo~ that is cool and nice, sadly I was told already to expect this to happen.” Like, the reaction to know something that will be unexpected for your thrill to know more as you progress is something amazing as you worked hard to know “What happens?”. (Still, I respect your reply and opinion about it and you dont sound stubborn or harsh about it, I am going to give you a uppy! ;b )

My personal curse from Teddie: Atlus will keep milking Persona 4 and even introduce it in Persona 5 :D (:S)

    • revenent hell

See, I don’t mind Persona games being connected by having the old game characters in the new game by some means, I do like that aspect in most games, but I am really over P4 characters at this point…… I really am..

I’d be ok with them appearing in the game as long as they don’t become “party” members or any major focus in the game. At least this is my hope if the developers do throw them in.

I still kind of think the point of P5 will be to save the P3 MC for some odd reason, though

      • MaximDualBlade

I want Persona 5 to have nothing to do with Persona 3 and 4. Persona 1 and 2 are connected and then P3 and P4 were connected and now I want an original story. give us back the adult characters. I don’t want more high schoolers implicitly losing their virginity when the social link gets to 10. I want party member that are above 20.

        • DyLaN

I believe it was said be4 that P5 will be set in high school again IIRC in one of the past interviews/articles.

          • MaximDualBlade

That doesn’t mean all party members will be highschoolers.

        • Arz

Adult party members? Cool. But I really dig that they want to keep the universe more intact and honestly would be really hype if P4 characters appear as side characters or even as party member.

          • MaximDualBlade

I want a darker story with all the incredible gameplay(and more of course) of P4. Like the outside battle stuff like getting a job, social links(or something similar), mini games, with a story like the main shin megami tensei branch. I would also like to have more supernatural and intelligen beings like Philemon, Igor, the gods. Because in P4 there were so few to interact with. It would be cool to be able to speak with personas, and having more supernatural npc an quests.

        • revenent hell

I’m thirty so playing as an adult isn’t really abhorrent to me at all but I get why they do the “high school” thing with their characters.

It’s like a point in time when there’s a lot of things causing chaos for most emotional wise. Not a kid anymore yet not an adult, figuring out what your plans for the future are while wanting to still have fun and not worry about it… I do get it and can still relate so it doesn’t bother me really that they are high school kids.

Besides as Dylan said I believe its already been said its going to be a school setting so I think that pretty much confirms it to be teenagers as most of the playable characters if not all.

  • Norbert Gespenst
