<< How to read and understand sales

This past Saturday (September 13th), Nintendo released Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS in Japan. Following its release, the publisher reported that the game sold 1 million copies in its first two days, making it the fourth Nintendo 3DS game to achieve an opening of 1 million sales.

In their weekly sales chart, sales tracker Media Create have revealed that, at retail, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS sold 944,644 copies. That means the game sold at least 55,356 copies via download sales, carrying it to the 1 million mark.

On the hardware front, the Nintendo 3DS sold 39,569 units (3DS + XL combined). That isn’t a huge increase over the number of 3DS units sold the week prior, but when you keep in mind that the New Nintendo 3DS has already been announced and is headed to Japan soon, it’s an impressive figure.

Also released last week was Destiny, Bungie’s new FPS-cum-online RPG. Sony published the game in Japan on PS4 and PS3, and Destiny sold 140,780 copies between the two platforms in its first week. That’s a great start, especially considering that this is a new property. To PS4’s credit, Destiny sold far more on that platform, too.

The top-20 software sales chart for last week is as follows:

Sales data acquired from 4Gamer and Media Create.

  • Congrats to Nintendo!

  • Richard Salomon

It never cross my mind that Destiny will be up there

    • HarakiriKami

People bought the bundle. Does media create count bundles? Or is that famitsu? I dont remember.

  • Freud_Hater

Oh wow, SSB4 sold like crazy on its first week and will keep on selling like crazy. What. A. Surprise.

    • Mental

It’s Smash Bros. How could anyone be surprised?

      • NintendoPSXTheSecond

That’s probably why people are surprised.

        • HarakiriKami

Mario kart 8 is a game aimed at the “everyone” market. but there are more “core” gamers who are 18- 30 year old men playing on the Wii U

Some of them bought mario kart but not all of them own it. The others who do got the bundle.

I expect smash to sell more like it did on the gamecube. Although the gamecube launched with smash and then started falling real fast 2 years after launch

    • Anewme…Again

It sold even more than that, those number don’t include downloaded copies.

      • darke

No it did not sell more then that. Yes the numbers do include downloaded copies.

The link is right there in the article to the specific article on siliconera covering the details; you could have checked that before spreading incorrect information.

        • Anewme…Again

The 944,644 do not include download copies -_-

        • kthanxyousuck

Yes…but it’s only information for 2 days so by now it has sold much more.

        • HarakiriKami

Famitsu says it sold 987,612 units.

They include the download cards you can buy at store. The other sales that make smash go to 1m+ are all eshop download

  • DanijoEX ♬ the Cosmic Owl

Ah, i see that Smash Bros. 3DS did well. Which is good news for Nintendo.

    • Cazar

But maybe not good news for the Wii U.

      • subsamuel01

I’m so curious to see how the Wii U version sells.

        • NintendoPSXTheSecond

Let me give you an estimate 30,000 first week. I’m calling it. Because 1 Japan is bleh on Consoles right now and 2 3DS came out first (Bad choice in my opinion) but that’s my estimate :/

          • 30,000 is too low, even by Wii U standards. 150k at the very least, probably higher.

          • Slayven19

Yeah that 30,000 was way to low, I was like what! Its not gonna sell better than hyrule warriors! lol.

          • HarakiriKami

            That’s still too low.

          • Yan Zhao

Um, Wii U sold almost 2 million units in Japan, and Im pretty sure that’s THE game most Wii U owners would want, as opposed of 3DS owners who all own one for different reasons.

It will sell at least 400k, minimum, because theres no reason this will sell worse than Mario Kart 8 at launch.

          • Jero

I think Mario kart is a more well known ip. We all love super smash brothers but if you ask a random dude on the street they’ll probably go “yeah mario” instead of “yeah based Sakurai”.

          • Yan Zhao

If that was true the 3DS version wouldnt have sold nearly a million units in 2 days.

The game IS popular, whether you’re casual or competitive. And Smash WILL be the reason a lot of people buy a Wii U in the first place.

          • Jero

I’m not saying is not popular, I’m saying Mario kart is more popular.

          • HarakiriKami

Super Smash Bros is the flagship Nintendo franchise.

          • HarakiriKami

You should look at the launch numbers for melee on the gamecube in japan. Or the launch numbers for Smash on the n64 if you want to make a good estimate

        • kthanxyousuck

I don’t think they’ll hit a million but I think if they make 250K-400K that’s a success considering there are less Wii U’s in Japan than there are 3DS’

          • They’ll hit it.

          • HarakiriKami

It’s launching in winter so the number will be way higher than that.

      • Jero

If the 3ds version does well then every copy they sell with the wiiu will be profits. I think it was a smart decision to go with a portable version of the game given the huge amount of 3ds consoles in the market.

So this is good version for the wiiu because it means that it doesn’t matter how many copies they sell in the home console the 3ds version is saying “I got your back”.

        • Cazar

Smart for short term profits yeah, but maybe not smart for long term sales of Wii U consoles/games.

          • HarakiriKami

For a device thats getting replaced in 3-4 years, I dont think it really matters to nintendo how much the Wii U sells. They just want to unload 3DS and Wii U stock and push as much software as they can. Their first party games will push that software. Then sell as much amiibo, software, and 3DS/Wii U accessories/controllers as they can to keep posting profits till their QOL initiative and Unified Software&Hardware approach for their next handheld and console is ready to go

          • kthanxyousuck

3DS isn’t a threat to Wii U sales. Most people who own a Wii U will get it for that console or both.

For people that don’t have a Wii U yet, this is the only game Wii U and 3DS share. If they were ever interested in the console, they’ll still buy one, even if it’s not specifically for Smash.

          • Cazar

You can downplay it with speculation as to how it might not hurt potentional Wii U sales, but there’s no way you can argue that the decision to release a 3DS version – and before the Wii U version of all things – is in any way helping the system’s cause.

        • ishyg

It’s not about the game sales, it’s about the hardware sales. SSB is supposed to push the Wii U hardware.

  • Thatguy

This Week In Sales: Super Smash Bros. 3DS And Destiny

And Xbox lo, i mean One.
Anyway, impressive numbers for 1 region. But i am going to wait for WiiU version

  • Anewme…Again

Seem like releasing SSB on handheld in japan helped sell a lot more copies, i don’t remember any SSB selling that much in japan on the first week before.

Edit: Seem like i was right, according to this chart this SSB is indeed to best selling SSB on the first week to date.
And those number don’t even include downloaded copies.

  • Mental

While everyone’s looking at Smash Bros., I’d like to say that it’s nice to see that Destiny did well in Japan. It may not have sold as much as it did in the Americas or Europe, but looking at the sales numbers, you certainly can’t say it did bad either. Props to Sony for pushing the title in that region.

    • Not just Destiny, but Naruto as well. Launching in the same week as another fighting game AND to non-Nintendo fans in the same week as Destiny.

  • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

Wow, Smash literally smashed the competition! Nice to see Destiny up there as well.

  • subsamuel01

People are actually still buying Dragon Quest?

    • British_Otaku

Strong license I guess. It doesn’t matter whether it is an inferior experience to the other systems, unstable and costs another fee when it is DQ… >_>

It’ll be up again when it comes to Christmas and they make the game stable.

I was expecting a real drop to under 10K for the game, but it seems just like you can expect Aliens Colonial Marines to sell on the first AND second week of us knowing how much they messed up, big licenses can cover for problems there as well. They basically covered their own shipment already.

    • It’s DQ!

      • ronin4life

        Dairy Queen?

  • Curious to know how much Smash would have sold if it released worldwide at the sametime.

    • Jero

Well when it’s released in our region just add the numbers. My guess is that it’ll sell about 3 million in eu/us. I don’t know, I’d have to look at pokemon sales.

  • Damn, even the first Yo-kai watch is still on the list.

  • Guillermo Oliva III

Wow, N3DS just beat all other systems “sales”. Also, I am surprise that Nintendo has not bothered to own “Sony”. XD

    • I’m confused about your comment regarding the N3DS.

      • Guillermo Oliva III

“N3DS” ….. Nintendo 3DS? seriously, get over it and if you cant figure out my statement ,then tough luck.

    • darke

… what N3DS sales? The new system hasn’t even been released in Japan yet.

In fact nothing you said actually makes sense.

      • kthanxyousuck

I think they meant Nintendo 3DS not the new 3DS LOL

        • Guillermo Oliva III

“They”? I am not a multiple human freak and you should have typed “I think [Guillermo Oliva III] meant Nintendo 3DS, not the new 3DS LOL”

      • Guillermo Oliva III

“N3DS” …. Nintendo 3DS? what does the new system has to do with this? quit being such a lame jerk.

  • Adrian Duran

I’d like to see how SSB does in the states, since it is more popular in the West, compared to games like Pokemon and Mario, which are usually more popular in Japan

    • AkuLord3

Ummm those games are just as popular in America soo ok? (at least 3D mario are more popular overseas)

    • Well, it being the 3DS game will probably hurt it a little bit, relatively speaking. Very few handheld games get preferential treatment in the West – basically it’s Pokemon, and that’s it. Everything else is a secondary priority at best.

Judging by how well Pokemon X/Y sold in NA though – eventually getting up to just over 4 million copies – it should be super great still. Probably not quite as “explosive” out the gate as here in Japan, but it should do consistently well over time. But it won’t be quite as good as Japan (for Pokemon, they managed to move 4.3 million Pokemon copies).

The Wii U will certainly do better in The West than in Japan though. So who knows how many people are waiting out for that one in the West. That could affect sales a bit

      • HarakiriKami

Japan is the second biggest Wii U territory behind NA.
The third is Germany France, Spain,Italy put together then the UK.

      • Adrian Duran

The only problem with that, is Wii U isn’t very popular in the US, and I doubt Smash will help “save” the system.

But it is supposedly coming out around Black Friday, so who knows?

    • kthanxyousuck

Didn’t X and Y sale as much overseas as they did in Japan?

  • raygunner659

The url has super-smash-bros-destiny in it. It sounds kinda epic. Unfortunately my Super Smash Bros destiny is pulling my hair out waiting for October 3rd.

  • idrawrobots

Wow, Destiny really helped the PS4 I guess, WOW! Also, FPS-cum-online.

    • HarakiriKami

      white ps4.

expect a similar uptick with dragon quest heroes when silver Ps4 comes out

  • NeptuniasBeard

Top 5 sales for this week are
    1. Super Smash Bros
    2. Super Smash Bros
    3. Super Smash Bros
    4. Super Smash Bros
    and finally
    5. Super Smash Bros

    Cuz it spits hot fire

    • AuraGuyChris

I don’t think Chiaki would pout like that if this was true.

      • NeptuniasBeard

I’m pouting at Ishaan/Media Create for making such a grave mistake

  • Makoto Yuki

    wow that XB1 sales…

  • Yan Zhao

    LOL Xbox One sales.

  • ivanchu77

    Japanese reaction to xbox:

    • I get it, but it makes sense that it didn’t to do well considering Nintendo and Sony have had their hands in the Japanese market for decades. If it was the opposite in which Sony or Nintendo came to the states the same thing could have happened.

      • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

It’s not that, the Japanese market just refuses to buy from Microsoft. No amount of time is going to change that mentality~.

        • Everything I said is true. If MS was a Japanese company and they had a console out since the time of the N64 and Ps1 era they would have no trouble selling their product.

          • Slayven19

While probably true its pointless to try and guess at what could have been now. Microsoft has lost this battle in japan and seems to be losing in the west as well.

          • Key difference between losing and lost. Unless the ps4 puts up Wii numbers X1 and even the Wii U more so in Japan are still in the race.

        • ishyg

          Then what about Windows? :D

Kidding aside, there’s just nothing on X1 that would probably sway them, not even Titanfall. And as discussed before, the whole home console market of Japan is on a decline, so we can factor that too.

          • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

Even at their worst, Sony and Nintendo have sold more. The XBOX 360 never took off and that’s because people simply didn’t want to give a Western first party company the chance [in Japan]. That’s just my perception, maybe I’m mistaken. But from where I sit, it does feel like it’s a buch of closed mindedness to foreigners in the market~.

          • ishyg

But what if Monster Hunter becomes an Xbox-exclusive game, do you think it will sway people towards the console? Then again I think MHF didn’t work out well too, with the subscription and stuff. It might be the taste of gamers that affects it as well. We really can’t point fingers aside the fact that both Sony and Nintendo are domestic products, and the Japs certainly loves their domestic products (I can only think of Apple when it comes to foreign product dominating a market).

It might be that people just want to support the domestic product and not really close-mindedness. And with the parity PS4 now has with X1 (almost all games are multiplatforms), it’s seems likely.

I also think that some of the Xbox sales here are from foreigners.

      • Guest

PS4 is the top in the states over 8 months…

        • And? Last gen the ps3 only out sold the 360 in japan and ultimately at the end of its life in the states. Tide could change at anytime.

  • pokeroi

Dat difference between the 1st and 2nd+3rd, all 3 are new.

  • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

My poor PSV, you are on the way to absolute irrelevance [sub 10k] once more on the last bastion where you were still allowed to breathe~. =/

    • Death Metal

Why do people keep saying that about the Vita? It has quite a nice selection of games going for it.

      • Juan Manuel M. Suárez

I never questioned or alldued to that. I only stated that it seems to be heading to the realm of sub 10k weekly sales again. A few months ago it was averaging 20k weekly even without releases. Yet now it’s been on decline week after week in Japan~.

    • subsamuel01

Their usually higher, its probably because Smash Bros came out and everyone’s buying a 3DS. Plus there wasn’t any major Vita releases, it sells fine in Japan.

  • Aristides

Nice, PS4 got a pretty nice boost from last weeks numbers.

  • kthanxyousuck

Did Destiny not come out on Xbox at all? LOL

It’s been 6 years since the last game and 3DS Smash is good for players new to the series and kids of course. I think it’ll sale well overseas. Maybe not 1 million in two days on 3DS but should still do well.

    • HarakiriKami

      No. its exclusive to playstation

  • CozyAndWarm

It’s weird. The Japanese REALLY don’t like the XBone for some reason – too western? nothing but western games? anti-consumer features like paid online? – but then they buy up PS4s for a game like Destiny of all things.

    • Death Metal

Online on PS4 is also paid.

      • CozyAndWarm

Right, which is why I don’t get the XBone hate over there – both consoles have the same negatives it seems

        • Slayven19

          Xbox1 also costs more.

        • ronin4life

Brand loyalty and brand affinity. MS has a poor history with Xbox in the country and Nintendo and Sony have VERY good history.

        • Yan Zhao

Terrible initial PR, terrible library of games in comparison to PS4 from a Japanese audience perspective. Nonexistent Japanese developer support, Microsoft. Almost a year late. Kinect.

Not that hard to understand really.

    • HarakiriKami

They just wanted a white Ps4

    • ishyg

Don’t get weirded out. Sony published Destiny in Japan, so it’s probably an exclusive here. Also, there are gaijins like us who buy from here too.

    • nihongogamer

Destiny is Sony exclusive in Japan and Idolmaster is on PS3 now too. Xbox is sadly losing its exclusives but with the Minecraft acquisition who knows, maybe Microsoft will think of some cool ways to use the XboxOne features in Minecraft. I was surprised how popular minecraft is here in Japan.

  • E.T.993

SSB4 sold more than six times Destiny’s PS3 and PS4 versions COMBINED IN A SINGLE WEEK!? Well, I’m not THAT surprised, but, oh well. Also, Vita sells more than Wii U. Intriguing. GIVE ME AN APE ESCAPE VITA AND I SHALL (temporarily) JOIN YOUR FORCES!

  • AuraGuyChris

    • Between the 3DS and the Wii U versions? Easily.

      • AuraGuyChris

That’s cheating, you know. Asking another console for help. I may as well pitch the previous Yo-kai Watch game to make this fair.

        • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

Considering that this is the biggest opening for Smash Bros till now, i believe it had chances here.^_^

  • Göran Isacson

Hyrule Warriors crossing the 100K mark. Good on it. Destiny actually launching on second AND third? Great for it! (honestly wasn’t expecting that)

Smash brokay I am not surprised. No one is surprised.

  • SlickRoach

Destiny really shocked me. Thought it looked stupid at first since the only FPS games I even touch are TF2 and Borderlands but I gave the beta a shot even though I can’t stand Halo or Call of Duty.

Now I’m playing the actual game and as person who primarily plays JRPGs this is the most fun I’ve had in any videogame for years. Even stranger since I never care for any majorly overhyped games like this or others such as Watch Dogs, Skyrim, etc.

  • Tonton Ramos

And we just got reports that a certain blue bomber just assaulted a kid with a rosster hair

  • NBXX

Is it fair that smash is in the chart when it hasnt been a whole week? I think by saturday is gonna be over a million units sold.

    • British_Otaku

Totally fair. As with all charts, not all of the releases on the same day or exactly when the charts start but fortunately most buyers tend to pop up in the first day or so anyway.

If you want to think it as selling more, sure include Nintendo’s download numbers to have a cool million in a few days or somehow count some of Media Create’s next week to calculate how much a week is worth. Media Create doesn’t see it that way though.

  • nihongogamer

Impressed and happy that Toukiden Extreme is continuing to sell and over 120,000 sales on PSVita! I thought its popularity would have fallen after God Eater 2 came on the scene.

Been playing Smash Brothers non-stop since Saturday’s launch. So good.

  • J_Joestar

DQX for 3DS still managed 6th?
