Level-5 have been quite successful with the Yo-kai Watch franchise, but it looks like they’re not stopping there, as they recently announced a new project in the works, in this week’s issue of Famitsu magazine. [Thanks, Game Jouhou.]

While there aren’t any details as to what this new major project will be about, Level-5 are currently recruiting programmers, designers, and planners that can think on their feet. Details on the new game should be revealed in the near future.

Could they finally be working on the sequel to Ni No Kuni that, they would make if, Ni No Kuni did well in the West?

    • Serge

With Ghibli out of business, i doubt it.

      • artemisthemp

Ghibli ain’t out of Business, they just lost Miyazaki

        • No, they’re actually seriously considering getting out of the animation business. Pretty much none of the non-Miyazaki works sell like crap, and even the recent Miyazaki works haven’t done as well in the past. You’ve got recent stuff like The Wind Rises, Princess Kaguya, and When Marnie Was There that really haven’t done all that well, and the execs were basing the future on the company on that last one… which handily lost to the combined might of Frozen and Pokemon. Definitely not a good week to choose to open on.

They’re not gonna shut down completely, but it’s quite likely that the animation department will close, and that they’ll simply focus on the merchandizing of the films they do have.

      • First off, Ghibli isn’t shut down. They’re just unsure of their future, and don’t yet have another feature in production. They still have a TV show that’s yet to even premiere though; they’re not shutting down. At least not yet. Their production output is getting smaller though, that much is true.

That being said, Level 5 doesn’t need the whole shebang. Ni No Kuni may be famous for Ghibli’s involvement, but there’s traditional Level 5 fantasy hallmarks all over that sucker. Dark Cloud 2, Dragon Quest IX, and Yokai Watch all share a lot of the same kind of world-building details as Ni No Kuni. Like how a lot of the monster designs in Ni No Kuni can easily hang alongside those in Yokai Watch? And how many games can they put a face on a tree and make it a wise, old character? lol

Basically, if they get Joe Hisashi to score, and Katsuya Kondō to do character designs, they should be fine. Kondo is the character designer at Studio Ghibli who worked on stuff like Kiki’s Delivery Service, Princess Mononoke, Nausicca, Totoro and more – basically, if you’re thinking of “The Ghibli look”, you’re thinking of Kondo’s characters. Which is why Jade Cocoon on the PSX felt like a Studio Ghibli game. Ghibli was not involved in any way, but Kondo did the character designs:

(Scrub to 1:22 if you basically wanna see the “Princess Mononoke” of the PSX)

        • ishyg

Whoa, Jade Cocoon. I’d like to see the next game in the franchise.

    • HarakiriKami

      Nope

  • Raymond

Level-5 Making the best games in the whole damn world.

    • Kalis Konig

And keeping them in the East lol.

  • Wasn’t there wordplay in their hiring ad that strongly hinted at another Yokai Watch? Like putting ‘nyan” at the end of sentences, a la the main mascot character for that game?

I’d personally like to see more new IP from, a return to Dark Cloud, or Ni No Kuni (if Ghibli is even up to it). But hopefully, at the very least, should this be a new Yokai Watch, they go for a big series expansion and take this to consoles and/or PC’s instead of, or in addition to, handhelds.

    • LemonsArentForever

yea but as gematsu said just because they used the nyan thing at the end of words does not necessarily mean that its a new yokai game they could simply just be decorating their recruitment page with their flagship title.

  • oblistar

    I dream of Dark Genie…

  • James Todd

why hasn’t anybody said this yet white knight chronicles 3 possibly

    • HarakiriKami

Because Level 5 stopped working with Sony.

      • James Todd

it doesn’t have to be sony exclusive hell look at bayonetta 2

        • HarakiriKami

          Isnt it sony’s ip?

  • Shippoyasha

I just hope they have a mind to release them world wide this time around. All their promises at timelier world release for their games was so long ago. And it seems like they didn’t hold up to their word.

  • Kalis Konig

Meanwhile America is still waiting for Inazuma Eleven 2, Little Battlers, and Yokai Watch. we are only behind by 16 or so games between those franchises so we are not in any rush to catch up or anything. lol but seriously I really hate that Level 5 won’t release their franchises unless they have someone to pick up the merchandising and anime rights first. They make quality games and were on the path to becoming the new JRPG powerhouse before they made the decision to turn their games into extensions of animes and toys. Would be fine but they clearly need better international management. We are only just now getting The Little Battlers Anime in America for example lol.

  • DudeJericho

Excellent, can’t wait for what they’ll bring out next, just hope they’ll consider other countries too..

  • Jeremy Noble

Dark Cloud 3. Make it happen guys. i will also accept rogue galaxy 2.

    • HarakiriKami

      That requires sony

  • Cyril Murasakitsuyukusa

I really hope that this “major project” they’re working on turns out to be either Dark Cloud 3, Ni No Kuni 2, WKC3, or Rogue Galaxy 2. Would be real happy if either of those games gets to be made and released on any of the Sony platforms! ^_^

  • landlock

I’ve never really connected with Level-5’s console games.

Found some of them ok (Dark Chronicle/Rogue Galaxy) but others have been a real chore (WKC, Ni no Kuni, Dark Cloud). The only one I’ve really loved was DQVIII.

  • I wouldn’t mind if they worked on another DQ game.

  • I want a new job they could recruit me =P

    • ishyg

      Me too.

  • Suriel Cruz

Let it be a Ni no Kuni sequel. *w*

    • Joshua Myers

Or a new Dark Cloud T-T

    • Altumn

Not a sequel, but a successor or new game of the likes, yes please!

      • ishyg

        “but a successor”

I thought Yokai Watch was the successor?

  • They are definitely one of my favorite developers right now. Like Platinum, From Software and Atlus ;)

  • FivePointedTheStar

Can always pray it’s Dark Cloud 3.

  • Tsurugi

New Inazuma Eleven ! ( Endo and Gouenji back ! )

  • Scissors

I’d be so cool if this project was that PSP horror RPG they canceled.

  • So… I’ll be sufficient if it’s either Ni No Kuni 2, or White Knight Chronicles 3: This Time With a Decent Localization Team. No, the WKC title wouldn’t necessarily have to have that title, but it’d have to at least live up to it. No more of this innocent words being censored, no more of this 60% of left on disc untranslated BS.
