Origins Of Forbidden Magna And Its "Action SRPG" Battle System

By Spencer . October 1, 2014 . 5:35am

Marvelous, the company behind Story of Seasons and Rune Factory, has a new game where you fight monsters and run an inn with Spirit Girls as maids. Similar to the Rune Factory and Luminous Arc games you can spend time with the girls you work with and that gives them boosts in battle.

"It’s human nature that when you work on the same thing over and over, you want to branch out and do something different. We asked the Rune Factory team if they wanted to create another Rune Factory or if they wanted to branch out and create something else. They said they wanted to challenge themselves with something else and that was the beginning of Forbidden Magna," producer Yoshifumi Hashimoto said to Siliconera when we talked about how the game got started.

Forbidden Magna began its life inside Neverland, the same studio that makes the Rune Factory games and Lufia series. After the studio closed, some of the Neverland staff moved into Marvelous AQL to finish Forbidden Magna.

Hashimoto continued, "Forbidden Magna has an inn with girls in it, but the team is really good at making action games. Forbidden Magna is really an action game without a grid." Before you strike, a red area highlights which enemies you’ll hit. The key to the battle system is to pile monsters into your attack area to get a big combo. Spirit Girls specialize in different attacks like Diana who has a spear that hits enemies straight in front of her compared to Charlotte who has a wide swinging sword.

"Charlotte, one of the characters you meet early in the game, and Lux, the protagonist, are my two favorites," said Hashimoto. "It is more like an action SRPG game. In Rune Factory, the main character can do anything, wield a sword or use magic. In Forbidden Magna, each character has different abilities like long range attacks, short range attacks, or magic more like a strategy RPG game."

Forbidden Magna comes out tomorrow for Nintendo 3DS in Japan. While Forbidden Magna has not been announced for the West, Xseed said they are interested in the title.

I’d completely forgotten it’s being released tomorrow :o It looks cute, and I’m a fan of all the Rune Factory games so far, but I’m still hesitating to get this one for some reason.

    edit: the opening video?

    • HarakiriKami

      Teh graphikz

      • DyLaN

The opening animation is actually pretty well animated…..

    • DyLaN

I believe the opening vid was ady officially uploaded be4? This looks like a camrip of the video.

  • chibidw

    XSeeeeeed doooooo iiiiiit

    • E.T.993

They said they were interested when the game was announced.

  • E.T.993

I’m definitely buying it. From what I’ve heard(Siliconera), even if you lose a battle, you’ll keep all the EXP you gained during it. Which motivates you to try again with your new aquired EXP.

  • kliskur

We asked the Rune Factory team if they wanted to create another Rune Factory or if they wanted to branch out and create something else.

Lol.. Hope there will be a new RF in the future..

    • sakanaとkoeda

I think it’s completely understandable to try different things. I’m fine with waiting for a polished, refreshing RF experience.

  • DyLaN

Totally forgot abt this. Time to post some main site updates.

New characters, Schamoni (CV: Yuuko Sanpei) and his twin loli (Noel? CV: Sora Tokui) that wasn’t given a romanization for her name.

For those who care/are into moon, here the written and voiced messages from the seiyuus.

  • Talith PA

Xseed said they were interested in it around February, and since then nothing. Now the game is about to be released and there is still no word from them. Come on Xseed! Get off your ass and bring this over. The 3DS is region locked so it’s a real pain in the ass to play imports.

    • PenguinPlayer

Calm down, Xseed is owned by Marvelous, localization is almost guaranteed, just like with IA/VT is just a question of time.

Senran Kagura took how many years to be localized again? It was a lot, but in the end it arrived safe and sound, just wait.

  • Jeremy Lafferty

I will buy this when it gets localized. Sadly, it’s doubtful we’ll get another Rune Factory game, since Neverland studios are no more.

    • luckgandor

This game is being made by the RF team though. Most of the staff at Neverland was apparently absorbed by Marvelous. Yes, they’re gone in name, but the talent is still there, and Marvelous is the owner of the IP. Overall, it’s a safe bet that we’ll see an RF5 in the future.

      • MrTyrant

I think its safe to asume that supporting this game will probably help to a future Rune Factory game. So I hope they bring it and people buy it.

      • Jeremy Lafferty

Not saying it’s not possible, and of course I am hopeful that the series will be continued, but yeah. Expect nothing, and you will never be disappointed.

  • Shippoyasha

Quite excellent that they aim to make every character have wildly different play characteristics. I think it’ll be pretty exciting to see the studios combine their action gameplay prowess with deeper RPG mechanics. That kind of a fusion has resulted in a lot of interesting games this past gen. And hopefully into the future as well.

  • izanagi

Hoping that we won’t have to wait to long until this game is localized

  • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

This game battle system really looks like Valkyrie Profile 2 SIlmeria or Valkyria Chronicles battle system here.^_^

Boy o boy, i hope this game does well and X-Seed will tries to bring this game here.^_^

More Jrpg especially this srpg is always great.^_^

    • Hau To

Not affirmative. I can tell you that this game is more like a mix Phantom Brave due to the movement and Final Fantasy Tactics or any other normal tactics game. If you’re expecting multiple characters to attack at the same time, they won’t. They each have their own turn.

      • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

Ahhh indeed. I remember wrongly. Yeah, everyone had their own turn. Maybe i am just dreaming for more VP series and VC series here.T_T

        • Hau To

          Perhaps one day. :<
This is still a good game though.

  • AuroraSpark

Well, if the fiasco and backlash with Senran Kagura Shinovi Versus published by Marvelous AQL EU is any example to go by, this game is going to receive some form of pointless censorship to appease one little country that has a problem with one character just because the company wants to rush the release… I would rather have XSEED publish this game over here in the UK than let Marvelous EU get their censoring hands on it… heck, XSEED is trying to publish Rune Factory 4 in the EU for us, so this theory is entirely possible.

Apart from that, really want this game over here. :)
