Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS Sold Out In Japan

By Ishaan . October 3, 2014 . 8:29am

Predictably, Super Smash Bros. for Nintendo 3DS is sold out in Japan. Hands up—who’s surprised? No one? Okay, then.

In its third week on store shelves, Super Smash Bros. for 3DS sold 109, 811 copies. That’s down from 321,363 copies the week prior. Japanese sales tracker Media Create says that the game could have sold more, but stock shortages got in the way.

Thus far, Smash for 3DS is at 1.37 million sold. It should be interesting to see how it holds up over the next couple of months, especially with the Wii U version of the game on its way. We’ll keep track of the game through the holidays.

I’ve been waiting for a Smash article now the game’s released. Because Sakurai has updated the website with the first 3 unlockable characters and I’ve been wanting to say this since I first saw the screenshot on the website:

“Dammit, Shulk! What have you started!? DOG PILE ON LUIGI!”

    • Okay, wtf? I posted this and the image wouldn’t show. So I deleted it and now it’s a Guest post? Damn you, Disqus!

      • ZnTxn

If you upload an image directly (and not copy-paste the link) you need to refresh the page to actually see it.

The delete button never works as intended. You do need to ask a mod to remove your message. Or you can just edit the comment, and change the whole thing for -delete- or whatever and then delete to just appear as a guest. But yeah, disqus…

        • I’m aware that I need to refresh the page. It was the image itself, showing that dreaded “X”. I thought maybe my internet was craping out again. I actually lost my net connection temporarily about an hour before posting.
I’m not that bothered about deleting it now or anything. The message got out. That’s all that matters. xD

      What is really happening here:

*Luigi lies on the mat in pain as Falco and Shulk set up their finishing move*

Captain Falcon: “you think you can take US, The Captain and Luigi on in a tag team? COME ON! WHAT ARE TWO CHALLENGERS TO A GUY LIKE LUIGI!”

      Luigi:”… Why…”

    • Adrian Duran

Falco is a bird, not a dog

      Fox however…

    • Scissors

      This picture is NSFW

  • Darkbright

Meanwhile I crawl into a corner hoping my copy will be delivered quickly. :(

  • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

Great move for Nintendo. I only wish the same could be said for the Wii U version when it comes out.

    • NeptuniasBeard

      Dang, past tense already? lol

      Though I agree sadly

      • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

lol…yeah, I thought it added more effect.

        We will see. :)

    • Satori Satya

      Japan = Handheld/mobile nation

Even uber-popular games like GTA V or The Last of Us sold a fraction in Japan compared to what they sold elsewhere.

However, Smash Wii U will do similar business as Mario Kart 8 did in Japan. Nothing big like Mario Kart 7. But decent sales.

      • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

Why even bring up GTAV or The Last of Us? This is Japan we are talking about! Of course, Western games will sell a fraction compared to everywhere else.

My point was I wish the Wii U version could be “sold” out as well. I know that Japan is predominantly in the mobile/handheld market so factoring everything in it most likely could be in Mario Kart 8 range (a good reference)…maybe it will sell even more. We’ll have to see :)

        • Satori Satya

I wasn’t segregating games here. The obvious point was that consoles games sell a lot less than handheld games – No matter how popular the IP may be – (see FF games). In Japan, the 3DS managed to do what the aging PS3 didn’t do since it came out six years earlier. To have a dozen million selling games in its library.

So even if you were wishing for a specific result, the odds that Smash Wii U will sell as good as Smash 3DS aren’t exactly very good.

Because of the obvious reasons already mentioned (and that you were quite aware of, too).

      • Eder García

GTA 5 sold better than expected in Japan, almost 750k if memory serves me

        • Satori Satya

My point wasn’t that GTA V wasn’t a success in Japan. Only this: Japan is mostly a handheld/mobile market.

So even if you got a popular/well-known IP, it’s probably not gonna sell as good on consoles as it does elsewhere. Because of how the market is over there.

So in that example, even if GTA V sold well in Japan. 750k is only a fraction of what the game sells in other major markets where consoles (not handhelds) are the main platform for gamers. For instance, the game sold over 3 million just in the UK.

          • kthanxyousuck

GTA 5 was considered a massive success in Japan because they usually don’t buy that kind of game. So even if they were console centered, it never would have one better than that because in terms of Japan it’s not a popular IP.

But I do think that the Wii U smash will overall sell the least in Japan. I think it’ll probably hit maybe ~400K by the end of the year if it comes out around Nov. 21.

          • Satori Satya

It will def sell a lot less than the 3DS version. No doubt about that. I won’t make predictions on how much it will sell though. Many got Mario Kart 8 numbers wrong (see Polygon) ;)

    • subsamuel01

The Wii U version will probably flop in Japan, but I’m sure it will do fine world wide. It probably won’t come close to Brawl in sales though.

      • HarakiriKami

You must be crazy if you think its gonna flop in japan lmao

        • CptPokerface

It’s no secret that console gaming sales have been declining in Japan while handheld and mobile gaming has been rising.

It’s not all that crazy to think that Smash Wii U won’t sell nearly quite as well as such.

          • Jaegers

Not selling as well doesn’t mean flopping.

          • CptPokerface

            Never said it was either.

          • HarakiriKami

Game still dont have trouble selling a million units in that territory on consoles man

          • CptPokerface

I never insinuated that it couldn’t or wouldn’t. Only that it was less likely than it’s 3ds counterpart, but still quite likely considering the overall popularity of the series.

  • Kallumsmarties

So sales would of bee much higher. That’s actually nice to know. Looks like they could be hitting the 2 million mark by the end of the year then adding the amount of sales UK and US will sell, looks like were expecting millions sold by the end of the year.

  • NeptuniasBeard

I’m digging the 3DS version right now. Currently cheesing lvl 1 cpu matches to unlock everyone, then back to online.

I’ve been doing pretty good online so far, winning almost every match. Even got a Japanese player to give up and suicide on me lol

    • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

Nice! Are you on an XL or regular version? How does it feel with the circle pad?

      • NeptuniasBeard

The XL. The controls feel pretty good and I’ve even mostly gotten used to using tilts and smashes when I want. I don’t t really get how people were breaking the circle pad, the controls work just fine with a gentle touch

        • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

That’s great to know. XL would be my system of choice for the screen size alone. Most might have been breaking it due to their specific intensity. When one is in the heat of battle, controllers or in this case a circle pad on a handheld will feel the brunt.

          • NeptuniasBeard

Yeah, I kinda get it actually. Especially when going up against *spoiler to protect the innocent*, I’ve been tempted to go crazy

      • subsamuel01

Suggest playing it on an XL it’s easy too loose track of your character on the smaller screen. Upgraded just for this game.

        • NeptuniasBeard

So I guess you got the Smash 3DS XL? Kinda Wish I held out for that one

          • subsamuel01

Yea, I wanted to wait till the New 3DS came out but I’m not trying to wait till next year especially with Smash and Pokemon coming out this year.

          • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

Wise move. I only wonder how Smash will be play with the New 3DS, specifically with the C stick. It should be interesting, but I still think getting the Smash one was great for all the games coming out now and soon down the road.

          • NeptuniasBeard

I thought Siliconera put up an article saying it wasn’t going to use the c stick of the New 3DS? I guess they cold try patching it in though…

          • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

The NEW 3DS C stick is usable in Smash but not the expansion slide pad due to CPU limitations. Here was an interview with Sakurai.

          • NeptuniasBeard

OOOH! My bad. And when the WiiU version releases, I’ll be spoiled by the c-stick, so I guess I found MY reason to get a New 3DS. Smooth move Nintendo, you cunning bastards…

          • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

lol! no biggie. I know I can’t wait for the Wii U version but then again it does give some uniqueness on a smaller scale without the c-stick now. However, when the New 3DS comes out, it could be the system of choice for the game.

          • NeptuniasBeard

I hope that Nov 21 rumor turns out to be true. Right before Thanksgiving would be perfect.

Do you not have a 3DS, or do you just wanna maximize hype for the Wii U version?

          • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

If that rumor is true, I think it could be huge for the Wii U. Not only people buying it solely but those buying the console bundles. Would be a nice Thanksgiving weekend game. :)

I do have a 3DS but my preference is to play Smash on the larger screen. However, I may just go get.

    • raygunner659

I had the audacity to test completely new characters out in For Glory. Still did pretty good. Until I ran into that Sheik player. Ugh, and his Bowser too >_>

      • NeptuniasBeard

I did the same. It only cost me when I picked Shulk, since I didn’t even know which button activated the Monado. Coincidentally, it was also a Shiek player that took me down…

  • Eder García

i heard that news since last week, looks like it’s official now

  • Tonton Ramos

Ummm but what about the Western countries? It’s October 3 there what’s the status?

    • SaiyanJedi_Trunks

People on this board are playing it with great fun. Here is the crowd in front of Nintendo World this morning if there is any indication. I’m sure we will hear some sales numbers by next week.

  • Snorlaxation

Just bought it last night at the midnight pre release.
Haven’t gotten to play it yet though, cuz work. :(
    But later today….

  • komiko12

    • KPOP fan? xD

      • komiko12

Yes, but more on the casual side. Only group I can say I am a fan of is 2NE1.

  • Adrian Duran

Hope they didn’t limit stock to try and create hype like they did with the NES

    • OR to push digital even more.

      • It doesn’t work like that in Japan. Retailers sell eShop download cards, so if physical copies run out, retailers push those next instead.

        • Unless I’m reaaally dense, wouldn’t this fact bring us back to what I pointed at? Nintendo limiting physical carts to encourage eShop sales since it’s very unlikely shops will sell out of download cards.

          • When people say that a publisher is encouraging digital sales, it’s usually because there’s no middleman (retailer) involved, which means the publisher rakes in all the profit without having to part with the retailer’s cut.

But when retailers sell eShop cards, they’re still taking a cut of the revenue. We don’t know just how much of a cut they take (it could be lower/higher than the cartridge versions), but they do still get a cut.

          • The more you know. Pretty interesting indeed. However one must point out that Nintendo pushing digital sales is not for a full profit as you mentionned but rather a showcase for other devs to take part in porting more and more games to their online platform; like “look at the potential buyers you can get when you release games on our eShop!”. AND they keep good relations with the retailers on the field. So for me it’s win-win situation for them even though as you stated they don’t make a full profit out of those sales.

          • That is true, yeah. There are definitely other reasons for them to push the eShop than just pure revenue. It’s a more controlled environment, and one that they can curate as they see fit in terms of what to display where.

    • David García Abril

1.37 million in less than a month is hardly “limiting stock”.

  • Why is the name the same with the Smash bros for Gamecube?

    • What? On the Gamecube it was called Super Smash Bros. Melee.

    • Haganeren

I think you wanted to say “for N64”

    • dawnbomb

…its not, pretty much every where in the world the n64 verson is called super smash brothers, and the 3ds verson is called super smash brother for nintendo 3DS (and i’d asume, super smash brother for wii U)

i hope you read, like, out loud, because thats clearly pronounced as smash4. (er, super smash brothers4, but everyone just calls it smash4)

  • kthanxyousuck

Can we even logically believe that Nov 21st date at this point? Japan got the 3DS version 3 weeks earlier than the rest of the world. If they were to follow for the Wii U version that would make their release date End of October/Beginning of November and we haven’t even seen anymore footage of the game, much less a release date. I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s pushed all the way to end of December which would suck if it misses the holiday rush.

1.3 Million sales not including digital which is probably at around maybe 70k-80K going by the ~50K that was measured in the first 2 day thing Nintendo released. They’ll make sure to quickly restock for the holiday rush and will easily sell 2 million. I hope we get some numbers for the US/UK sales next week.

    • dawnbomb

…what, dude, the end of december IS the holidays. it would be EXPECTED that atleast the JP, (if not US, but thats a if) would be out at the end of december for the holiday. it even says on their page ‘this holiday season’ and guess what, its STILL FALL. its not winter yet.

i would be far more surprised if it released before winter. considering then the site would be lieing.

      • kthanxyousuck

End of December is cutting it close. If it’s Dec 19th then they still have a good window and most would probably preorder to secure a copy, though their best window would be November 25th-December 15th. I think Black Friday would be a genius time to release it in the US (since most stores would be open at midnight and shoppers would already be out buying).

They have painted Smash U into a corner in Japan. New 3DS is coming out in 8 days and as we know they prefer handhelds. If New 3DS is a big hit then those sales are going to sky rocket in November-December and convincing people to buy two systems, even during the holiday isn’t going to be easy (especially with Smash 3DS existing).

Then they have pokemon coming out Nov 21st. With 3DS Smash out the way I expect them to start heavily promoting that and I don’t think even Smash U hype can survive pokemon. Monster Hunter will also be a big holiday seller.

They should have tried to release Smash U before all of this to be honest.

    • ronin4life

World Wide realese would fix that pretty quick.

    • Anubisseesall

Nintendo would be stupid to not have the Wii U version out by mid November (Thanksgiving US). As crazy as the holidy shopping season gets, timing is everything and being there just before Christmas would hamper sales and time to market the game properly as you risk people being too caught up to notice. I’m betting November 21-26 for the NA release and Japan a few weeks earlier.

  • Linkmstr

Not surprised. I knew something like this would happen. This game is so freaking fun that I just have to share my highest score here:

  • Ric Vazquez

Exactly, no surprise, selling like hot bread.

  • Göran Isacson

I could comment on the sales, but I don’t really have much to say except “no duh it sells out is’ freaking Smash”.

So instead I’ma just share that I looked at that header pic and immediately went “I’ve seen enough hentai to know where this is going”.

I am already among the lost and damned, people. Mourn not my passing but forget I ever existed.

  • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

It is Smash after all. But i guess, Ninty is being a bit too lenient on the number of cartridge produce here? As while they predict it would be succesful, they dont think it will be able to beat Brawl into nothing lol.(In all early release.) Especially for a title which is normally consoles exclusive.

    • kthanxyousuck

Brawl sold 2.3 million copies in Japan in it’s lifetime

3DS sold 1.3 million in 3 weeks. It’s going to beat brawl without breaking a sweat.

I really don’t understand how they didn’t see this coming especially with no console release date.

  • Already have almost put 15 hours into the English game. I’M REALLY FEELING IT!

  • TheManWithPants

Just got it yesterday, and man, I’m enjoying the hell out of it! It’s probably my new favorite 3DS game at the moment. It’s like a mix between Melee and Brawl on the go. Love the character customization features; especially for the Mii fighters.

Sucks they gave Sonic different lines, though. Gonna miss “YOU’RE TOO SLOW!” and “NOW I’LL SHOW YOU! RAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAUGH!!!”

  • 5 gamestop near mine were out of stocks, so I have to go with digital version. Should have remembered to pre-order it.

    • Ronldbx6

I preordered mines, Picked it up with breeze.

      • Welp, on the bright side, it means that Smash 3DS was doing really well.

  • metalsonic71

Just checked GS stores today, sold out until monday.
    Fucking day 1 bullshit.

    • Ronldbx6

Always pre-order on a major release at gamestop to make sure your copy is guaranteed. I picked mines up yesterday (a day after the release) with a breeze. Sometimes even if they have copies, they can’t sell you them because someone already reserved it (has happened to me before).

  • Anubisseesall

Glad to see the game doing well, and they clearly needed to make a portable version based on these sales but with that said I just feel certain games are better played on consoles. I tried the demo but it just felt off to me, can’t wait for the Wii U one though

    • Ronldbx6

I’ve been playing the demo for about a week. I just got the actual game yesterday. I needed proper time to train and learn moves and properties. You don’t really get that with the demo. Definitely pick up the game. I like it so far better than the demo.

  • Rinku

    Guess they don’t have game-unplayable-rendering lag ; /
