Shovel Knight Will Get New Playable Characters After Its European Release

By Ishaan . October 30, 2014 . 8:24am

Shovel Knight has been out for a few months now, but developer Yacht Club aren’t done with the game yet. Speaking with Nintendo of Europe, director Sean Velasco discussed add-on content for the game that is currently being prepared for release.

“Every three to four months, we want to drop a new update after the initial [European] release of the game,” Velasco confirmed to NOE. “We’re going to have playable campaigns featuring Plague Knight, King Knight and Spectre Knight, in their own campaign with their own story. The gameplay will be 95% the same, but it’s going to be a big thing.”

In addition to the new playable characters, Shovel Knight will also get a gender-swap mode, whereby all the male characters will become female, and vice-versa. Additionally, the Wii U version will get an exclusive 4-player couch battle mode. Most of these features were initially announced back when Shovel Knight’s Kickstarter campaign concluded.

Velasco says that the Europe release of Shovel Knight is coming “really, really soon”. The game will include English, French, Italian, German and Spanish text right from its initial release, and even more languages will be added through patches at a later point.

Great game, it’s both a solid plataforming game and a nostalgia trip.

Cant wait to go back to it again.

  • Jero

Free? I recall the devs saying free content because the game was 15 dollars or something among those lines.

  • BleuVII

Heck, I’d even take a Black Knight palette swap, simple as it would be. :) ANY excuse to replay this game!

  • ThatGuy3190_7

For someone who isn’t a fanatic for nostalgia and homages, how good is this game? I’ve seen gameplay videos and images and so far, it is doing little to no wonders for me to actually want to play it.

    • Bakuryukun

The game is great nostalgia and homage or not. Great balance and pace, fantastic controls, awesome music. I’d easily recommend it.

    • Tiredman

It handles better than Megaman, and is actually a good bit of fun. I honestly think, if you are a play a game once and forget it player, that you wait till a few of character upgrades get released as you can beat it in 2 evenings depending on how much you play.

I’d agree with both the first commenters. I’d double down on the music, it’s really great.

    • Spidermang

It’s a really fun & well designed platformer. You don’t have to have nostalgia for anything this game does to enjoy it. It’s a breath of fresh air in the realm of hand-holding AAA titles.

It was a fantastic game. Looking forward to loads more content.

I’m still kinda miffed that the Kickstarter backers voted King Knight over Propeller Knight for the boss campaigns. >_<

    • Nirvanes

So true! WTF!! How did this happen? King Knight plays a lot like Shovel Knight…
For me it would be Propeller, Spectre and maybe Mole!
