Etrian Odyssey And Mystery Dungeon Collaboration Announced For 3DS

By Sato . November 24, 2014 . 4:26am

Atlus held a special Etrian Odyssey livestream this morning on Nico Nico, where Spike Chunsoft’s Koichi Nakamura joined them to announce Etrian Odyssey and Mystery Dungeon, a new collaboration title for the Nintendo 3DS.

The Mystery Dungeon series started out as roguelike spin-off the Dragon Quest series with Torneko no Daiboken. It later gained more popularity with the Shiren the Wanderer series and in the rest of the world with the Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games.

    • Harry Potter

      did i win?

    • HarakiriKami

      Thank you :D

  • I’m very curious as to what age group they’re hoping to reach out to with this. Right now, the RPG audience on 3DS is fairly adult-ish, between things like Bravely, SMT and Etrian Odyssey.

I can’t imagine a Mystery Dungeon collaboration being attempted to cater to a lower age group either, so my guess is that this is simply them realizing that EO is a strong enough brand with a central theme that can be used in a bunch of different ways and they’re trying to branch out to players within EO’s age range that like other kinds of RPGs, too.

    • Two

I kind of excited to see if they’ll try to do other spin offs, and what kinds if they do.

    • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

Actually, EO brand in Japan should be kinda popular to a niche adult classic Jrpg fans right?

So, if this one is a good game, i am guessing it will still target the same age market+ some who are afraid of classic EO style of game but a huge fans for dungeon style.

      • Yup, pretty much. My guess is this is still going to reach the same age group, but find a slightly different audience that overlaps with EO’s own.

        • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

Actually reading one of poster here on Siliconera where they pull the link of Etrian being Megaman style of Jrpg makes me think that it is not that wrong lol.

Considering how Etrian series is growing in popularity+ cheap development cost+ highly dedicated fan base(like me lol)+ highly flexible franchise which can be used on almost all kind of Rpg.

It is going to be interesting to see how Atlus/Sega tries to grow this franchise more.^_^

Even though, personally i am kinda sad that it kinda means that 7th Dragon series is dead for sure.T_T(The DS one and PSP is soooo good here.)

    • me they’re catering specifically to me

      • Given your tastes, it does look like it. :P

    • Eder García

i don’t think JRPG developers wants to reach younger audiences since those kind of games are hard for them, but possibly they want to reach the adult Nintendo audience who never touched a JRPG before.

      • Well, if you look at games like Final Fantasy or Tales or even Compile Heart’s titles, they kind of are aimed at a teen audience to a large extent.

Final Fantasy stopped catering to adults a long, long time ago. The stories haven’t been particularly engrossing of late and the characters haven’t been very relatable either. That isn’t to say older players don’t play FF and Tales… they clearly do. Just that I don’t think the 30-40 demographic is the primary audience for those games, as it is for titles like EO and Bravely.

    • MrTyrant

I played some roguelikes before but I consider them boring, I tried and tried to like them but I could never get into one. Fortunately Etryan was a bit more fun but I don’t know what to make of this game.

I’m sad that Atlus presented these titles like they their big hit.

  • Harry Potter

i was hoping for dynasty warriors xD

  • shytende

    This makes so much sense.
It’s actually strange they never did it before.

  • Princess_Eevee9

New Pokémon Mystery Dungeon please. Happy for this announcement too.

  • Rasputing

I’ll need to keep an eye on this, I love EO and PMD. I’m curious how they’ll handle story, though.

    • Ethan_Twain

Hopefully by having as little as possible. Etrian Odyssey and Mystery Dungeon are both classic dungeon crawling franchises that focus on gameplay over plot or characterization. So it seems totally backwards to me that they would add a ton of story to this.

      • s07195

Pokemon Mystery Dungeon proves story can work though in a favorable setting.

      • Rasputing

I’m actually more wondering whether we’ll see EO’s typical minimalist story, or the kind of event driven narrative PMD uses. I imagine the former, but it depends on which side is handling writing, so I could be wrong.

  • celery

At 0:51 you can see them picking from four different colors for the two Protectors. My hype levels are THROUGH. THE. ROOF!!!

  • Nagi

very interesting concept and graphics imo but the only thing i have in mind is what is witht he etrain odyssey spin offs and will people even buy this because 9i mgiht be wrong here) if it plays like mystery dungeon i fear it would become somewhat boring and repetitive excited too see more tho

    • CozyAndWarm

Roguelikes gonna roguelike. If you consider them “boring and repetitive” then this crossover might not be for you, which is totally fine

      • Nagi

Hope i am proved wrong tho ^^ these etrian spin offs are pretty good :3

  • natchu96

If they’re gonna make an EO game, they gotta make sure both the player characters and the enemies are sufficiently OP.

  • DyLaN

So the “Nobody knows the D” teaser site is actually for this.

    Wonder what this for then.

    • HarakiriKami

      Play the pokemon mystery dungeon

They’re roguelikes each floor of a dungeon is randomly generated so traversal is different every time.

  • British_Otaku

More of em before I finish the first EO?
Sure, I guess I needed another incentive to play anything Mystery Dungeon.

It does sound like a good match between the two.

  • Fronkhead

Congrats to HarakiriKami and NegativeZero for guessing correctly six hours ago.

I’m not sure what to make of this: sure, a roguelike dungeon crawler is cool, but an Etrian Odyssey crossover doesn’t exactly fit outside of both being “dungeon crawlers” at first blush — in fact this squanders what makes EO so unique.

    • HarakiriKami

Does it have a map drawing function?

      • Fronkhead

From the stream, no, it fills in each map square for you. The maps themselves and the roguelike genre don’t lend to this sort of map drawing anyway.

  • Two

    V confirmed

  • DanijoEX ♬ the Cosmic Owl

Interesting. Something that I wouldn’t even think of Atlus doing.

  • alhamega

    Eh.. EO5 just got announced.

  • Wafflenaut

    EOV Hype!

  • Silent-Hal

    Mashup Etrian Odyssey with EVERYTHING.

    • CozyAndWarm

I get the feeling EO isn’t a very resource-intensive series to develop, even to a point of high quality. Atlus could probably put out two or three EOs a year, but that would burn the audience out waaaaay too quickly. So they’re trying to diversify a bit, it seems.

  • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

Wowwwwww. Does this mean, we are going to face F.O.E!!!!! on Mystery Dungeon style???

…….Actually only the thought there almost makes me piss my pants lol.^_^

  • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

I guess, today is the Day of EO too lol.^_^

  • HarakiriKami

  • Ethan_Twain

I’m in. It’s a mashup between two franchises that prioritize gameplay over story. So whatever this game ends up being, I’m sure that it will be a rock solid dungeon crawling experience. And that’s what I come to both of these brands for.

  • kao

cool, I always liked the mystery dungeon type games but wasn’t into pokemon and I liked the customization in EO but wasn’t into the 6 party battle system so this is a good mix.

  • FOE in a roguelike setting would be absolutely terrifying.
    I’m in.

    • Money?Muney??All my luveee!!!

I can not think of the possibilities FOE wrecking my party due to wrong positioning lol.

Imagine FOE first attack slays ur healer/Damage Dealer………. Noooooooooooooooo!!!!

  • Namuro

Pretty cool to see the world of Etrian Odyssey done in other style.

I was hoping for Shiren to make a crossover or something, though. LOL

  • Shane Guidaboni

EO is already one of my favorite series, but now as one of my favorite genres (rogue-like) ?! Loving this.

    • AJ

Same here. It’s been a while, though, since there has been a (non-Pokemon) roguelike released in the west. I loved Shiren the Wanderer to death, and I desperately hope this comes over.

  • raygunner659

I think I’m entering cardiac arrest. Someone help.
There’s too much EO for my poor little heart to take.
What? No I didn’t say there’s too much EO, silly.
Just too much for my heart to take :’)

  • J_Joestar

could never get into EO games though i do enjoy MD ones,
maybe this will be able to get me into EO like how Gundam got me into DW.

  • Aemette

How far this serious has come. I remember the day when I walked into Gamestop and spotted EO 1. It looked like a quirky little title and what really drew me in was the variety of characters in the back, plus the archer on the front cover. I bought it, took it home, and before I knew it, I had been drawn into a world I could create with my own imagination. I’m excited for this collaboration because it’s like what I was expecting after PQ: chibi models running around in the dungeon.

  • ZnTxn

    F.O.E filled Monster House!!!

  • SobriK

The real story here is the amount of bongo drums in that music track. Love it!

  • *stares at the logo picture*
    *does the dance of excitement*

  • SlickRoach

I was thinking Pokémon Mystery Dungeon, but ok…

    • omgwtfhax

The Pokémon Mystery Dungeon games are part of the Mystery Dungeon series.

      • SlickRoach

I mean like Pokémon characters and Etrian Odyssey classes together in one game. That’s the first thing I imagined when reading the title.

        • omgwtfhax

That would have been awesome. Now I want it D:

          • Carrie Burkhardt

            BLOODBEAR was sent into battle!
            BLOODBEAR used FURY SWIPES!
It’s a Critical Hit! TREERAT fainted!

  • KuroNathan

I can’t stop listening to this remix, it’s so good

  • SetzerGabbiani

Given both series’ pedigrees, this game is going to be pretty hardcore. EO will chew you up and spit you out if you don’t plan properly, Mystery Dungeon as well.

  • TrevHead

Now if only Atlus would do an EO and Advance Wars / Langrisser SRPG colab, Sure they don’t fit aswell as MD but I just want to see what type of 3 headed Chimera of a game they’d come up with.

  • Heartlesswithaheart

Mystery Dungeon? This is…an odd move for Etrian Odyssey due to the fact that you can’t draw maps that won’t be outdated immediately, but I am looking forward to it nonetheless. Here’s to hoping they make it a great game!

  • Wild Espurr

Atlus is the god of RPGs. I LOVE YOU ATLUS!!!

  • rabid nintendawg

    Yes, thank you.

  • IsaacGravity

I’ll be happily waiting for continuous updates on this bit of news. I’m pretty excited about this combo.
