Metal Gear Rising’s Mechanical Designer Created Mechs For Xenoblade Chronicles X

By Ishaan . December 1, 2014 . 2:34am

Just as he promised last week, Xenoblade Chronicles X executive director Tetsuya Takahashi introduced a couple of the artists working on the game today.

“First up, Mr. Takayuki Yanase,” Takahashi tweeted. “He always manages to give shape to the exact image I communicate, so I have faith in him. For this game, too, he’s created some very cool Dolls (robots).”

Other projects that Yanase has worked on include: Ghost in the Shell: Arise, Tenkai Knights, and Metal Gear Rising, for which he did mechanical designs. You can access his website here.

“Then there’s Mr. Kouichi Mugitani,” Takahashi continued. “Xeno fans already know him, though. Naturally, I’ve asked for his help as a core member of the staff.”

Mugitani worked as a production designer on Xenosaga I and Xenosaga II. He served in the same role for Xenosaga III, and is also credited with providing character illustrations for that game. His website can be accessed here.

Xenoblade Chronicles X is in development for the Wii U.

    Holy cow :O

  • sfried

Looks to be a all-star production team

  • d3v

At first, I thought that it was Yoji Shinkawa, then I realized that it said Rising.

  • JadeiteAX

Oh well, at least the robots will look good.

  • D-Omen

Ooooh, I hope we get some artwork of the human characters from Choco as well, he’s just as god-tier as Tanaka!

  • mojack411

As much as it’s nice getting tid bits of information often, now it just pains me with the constant reminder of this game. Before my hype would spike whenever the game appeared in Nintendo Directs then die down after a week or two so that I would forget about it. Now I’m always remembering and always in pain >.<

  • Fronkhead

I can’t wait to learn more about the mechs in general in this game.

    • James Enk

seriously i want a ND focusing only on the mechs

    • Anime10121

Yep, I’m not even a mech fan, but the Xeno series always has some freaking awesome mech designs!

    • Ric Vazquez

Same here, if there is one game I can’t wait to get my hands on, it’s Xenoblade Chronicles X.

  • Stephen Mc Devitt

Rules of f-ing Nature! This is really cool.

  • Nytezero

Choco should have designed the characters as well. I understand why he went with Kunihiko Tanaka for character design as Xenogears is widely considered as his magnum opus after all. But Choco’s character art is just so sexy and slick!! Choco’s mech design is a bit underwhelming for my tastes, if his work in Xeno Emission and Chocolate Gouache is anything to go by.

    • HarakiriKami

This is not Hyperdimension Neptunia man. This is XenobladeX.

      Choco is too sexy.

    • César H. Sandoval

I like Choco’s, but honestly this game feels more of a spiritual sucessor to Xenogears, so I’m fine with the designer they went with.

  • ShawnOtakuSomething

    Game…of…the year…2015

    • Ash_Riot

      Persona 5.

      • uPadWatcher

Xenoblade Chronicles X is Game of the Year 2015.

        • animefreakhq

Persona 5 is releasing in 2015, as well as Metal Gear Sold V, The Witcher 3, Monster Hunter 4, Star Citizen, The Legend of Zelda, and Uncharted 4.

    • Jissu

Since it won’t sell as well as Zelda Wii U, I can probably guarantee that Zelda Wii U will be GOTY for 2015, even though I want it to be Xenoblade.

      • HarakiriKami

How much is Zelda U supposed to sell anyway? 4 million copies? Xenoblade on the Wii sold about as much as fire emblem on the 3DS did so I wonder how much it’ll do on the Wii U

        • Jissu

Xenoblade was Gamestop exclusive, which is why it only sold 900k. Fire Emblem Awakening actually has sold 1.40m. So it has sold a LOT more than Xenoblade. However, I expect Xenoblade Chronicles X to sell over 2m lifetime. Zelda I can see selling 5m or 6m lifetime

          • HarakiriKami

…. I have trouble seeing that. 5 m maybe but most Zelda games sell around 3-4 million.

    • Lemon

Shhh…don’t let the FFXV fans hear you…

      • Anime10121

pfft, like FFXV is actually gonna release next year XD

      • Michael Sosa

Don’t really like the way ffxv is turning out. Really can’t stand the look of the gay boyband main characters. Maybe the game will still be good, who knows. Ffxii had 2 of the worst main characters in a ff, but even despite vaan and penolo the game was the last good/decent ff game.

        • ♓Fish Ichthus♓

More like a sausage party to me. xD

    • Ric Vazquez

Probably, MGSV (and maybe FFXV) are contenders as well but I’m betting on Xenoblade.

  • Hossi Blumengaarten

dont like the character design for the game but everything else looks great

    • Jimmy Holdsworth

You mean you don’t like the style of some of the characters faces?

    • Daniel Jeanbaptiste

Dont know wat ya talking about Elma looks awesome to me.

  • jeka69

Enlighten me how chara illustrations is different from chara designer, because I thought Kunihiko Tanaka is back to design Xenoblade X?

    • Godmars

Ones promotional or concept while the other is practical and will actually be used in the game?

    • vanishmantle

Character Designer oft deals with ethe conceptual aspects of characters. From Protagonists to NPCs. Then the Character Illustrator refines the character concept that was picked. They flesh the design out ibto a final piece that will then be used as a visual aid to help build the character models. Hopefully that answers your question

  • César H. Sandoval

    His mechanical designs are great.

  • Captain Levi

Do I have to expect something like this?
    Insta buy.

  • Kai2591

    Very nice!

  • Satori Satya

Yep. I’m going to be playing with DOLLS (oops, I mean robots) when this game comes out.

I never play with dolls (hides massive Star Wars figure collection).

  • Senatiator
    • Chuntian Steel

“It’s kill or be killed, Cross. Honnouji Academy taught me that.”

  • Gonak
    • Grun

  • Lelouch Vi Britannia

Xenoblade Chronicles X excites me more than FFXV. At least Monolithsoft gets things done. Squeenix just never gets it good so much anymore.

    • Anime10121

If MGS V TPP wasnt a thing, this’d probably be my most hype game EVER! Xeno is a name that just emanates damn near perfection well baring Xenosaga 2….but we wont speak about that one

    • ♓Fish Ichthus♓

lool cuz most of the developers of Monolithsoft are from Square. Since those people left, Squeenix became shitty and has no imagination in creating better products.

      • HarakiriKami

A quarter of Monolith is from Square. The people Takahashi took with him. Square had 3 problem these past 7 years.

Thats the PS3, Final Fantasy 14 and Crystal Tool(Luminous too)

They did well on the DS and PSP. With a bunch of midtier PS3 games that were decent and a terrible saga of Final Fantasy.

Compared to back then their handheld + mobile support is… lacking. Why? FF14.

        • ♓Fish Ichthus♓

Thanks for the info HarakiriKami. :) I think they wasted too much funds on games that doesn’t sell. They shouldn’t use the title Final Fantasy anymore to avoid displeased gamers.

yea no imagation that’s right it takes no imagination to come up with ff15. I cant wait to see you review. are u gonna give it a 0/10 because its just another Lighting game? lol.

yea this is such a shitty

game that takes no risk within the freedom of its of its genre. oh yea so uncreative, not going above and beyond for the FF franchise. lol thats how you haters act

        • Xeon2

I see a lot of interesting lighting, Square enix has seldom messed that up since the PS2 era. At this point, I’m extremely skeptical of them though, their internal development has been troubled and there’s little reason to not be so. The modern direction of FF15 is “risky”, but we’ve had plenty of modern day games, which makes it difficult to take seriously. Certainly interesting environment for JRPGs, but I reserve my judgement until the demo to see the gameplay.

        • ♓Fish Ichthus♓

FF fan boy? Sorry for the word “no imagination”. I meant to say that Square Enix are not that creative anymore like they used to. What’s the use of open world if there isn’t much to do than sight seeing? The graphics are great and all but they’re lacking that spark that makes people love and have an unforgettable experience of the game like FFVII & FFX. I just hope that this game won’t be a sausage party in the long run. BTW I own the Lightning series and I enjoyed the XIII-2 the most. Anyway I’m still giving FFXV a shot when it’s released. But for now, I want Xenoblade Chronicles X so bad! :’)

    • De Thinker

You must have missed out on Bravely Default.

      • HarakiriKami

        That’s not really square.

      • Tiredman

one game out of 10 doesn’t change the fact that Squeenix is horrible at time tables.

      • Anime10121

I’m a huge Square Enix fan, but I’ll point out where that differs

        1. Thats a handheld game, and Square never stopped making great handheld games
        2. While I loved Bravely Default, only the first half was good/great, while the second half was almost throwaway garbage barring the end game boss parts
3.It had key talent from outside Square

If Square Enix is getting nothing done then why do we have a Final Fantasy XV demo alongside another information session at Jump Fest, Type 0 localized, more updates on FF14, and KH3 being made with new information just leaked. Why is Square Enix making whole new JRPGs for consoles, opening up an entire new studio just for the rpg genre on the home console market? Why did Square Enix just make Dragon Quest Warriors? Why did Square Enix bother to publish Nier and Dragekned 3.

If MS was getting things done then as an audience member I should be learning a hell of a lot more about their IP than FF15 since it was never post pon on Wii until WiiU came out. You have illogical basis…

yea SE is getting nothing done here that is nothing. who cares about that compared to who makes the art design for a few Dolls.

  • kdog254

Very cool! It seems the talent for this game is pretty stacked. I can’t wait to play this!

  • Sentinel

My gosh, the number of talented people on this game is through the roof.

  • Ric Vazquez

If there is one game I can’t wait to get, it’s absolutely Xenoblade Chronicles X.

    • lordrockman

Nice avatar i cant wait for that anime and i 100% agree man Xeno X is my tied GOTY for next year on Wii U!!!

  • animefreakhq

People keep bringing up Square and Final Fantasy when this is suppose to be Xenoblade X discussion. Insecurity is a horrible trait.

    • ♓Fish Ichthus♓

We can’t get rid of the Fanboys, let them be. They are just jelly cuz Xenoblade is better and they don’t own other consoles to try it out.

      • Xeon2

That’s irrelevant at this point, can we talk about the transforming mechs now? Please?
