The touch screen trackball controls are unorthodox, but work decently with Riz-zoawd. If you want to make Dorothy and Toto run towards the Yellow Brick Road you have to rapidly “spin” the trackball by drawing upwards lines with the stylus. In battle everything is controlled with the touch screen too.
Similar to Dragon Quest you see the enemies with their HP/MP meters staring at you. All the choices you make are on the bottom screen and if you want to casually stroll through Riz-zoawd you can take advantage of semi automatic battles where all you need to do is pick the characters you want to attack and watch the battle take place. If you’re a core RPG gamer you can select individual commands and maximize your combat efficiency by taking advantage of the Ratio Turn system. Kind of like Arc Rise Fantasia you have a pool of points to distribute to your team. You can give all of the to Dorothy or split them among the group. However, at least in the Tokyo Game Show demo, the amount of points you had were limited.
This TGS trailer does a good show demonstrating the combat in Riz-zowad and a feature I didn’t see, the elemental spirits. Pick these up and Dorothy can use powers from her spirit friends to do things like light up torches.
