Mario Kart on the Nintendo DS was one of the system’s most successful games, so it isn’t hard at all to see why Nintendo are aiming to release Mario Kart 3D this holiday season. Thankfully, they’ve added a few new things to the game, such as kart customization.

One example of this is tire customization. Giant tires help karts drive off-road. Smaller tires work better on city courses. New kart abilities are in, too. On big jumps, karts can deploy a glider wing to let them glide and find shortcuts. When you go underwater, a propeller pops out from behind to help push you along.

You’ll be able to race as both Mario characters, as well as your Miis. Amongst the new tracks in the game are courses on Wii Sports Resort and Pilotwings Resorts’ Wuhu Island, and the jungles from Donkey Kong Country Returns.

The game will support both StreetPass and SpotPass features, and will allow for multiplayer for up to 8 players either locally or over the Internet.
