Aerith Was Scary on Purpose in One FFVII Remake Scene

Square Enix shared a little tidbit about the scene in FFVII Remake when Aerith catches Cloud trying to sneak out of her house. In the segment, Cloud accidentally trips over something that makes a noise, which causes Aerith to come and check on him. In the Japanese dub, the voice director also had Maaya Sakamoto speak in a way that would fit a horror movie or game.

When speaking as Aerith in FFVII Remake, Sakamoto uses a fairly soft and feminine voice. However, after Cloud tripped, Aerith runs out and asks what’s wrong in a much deeper voice. According to the tweet, this is because the voice direction is actively aiming for something like horror, as if Aerith is Annie Wilkes (Misery). Aerith isn’t actually scary though! She reverts to her normal voice when telling Cloud that he needs to wait, and she also cleans up a little bit so that it would be easier for Cloud to sneak out later. It seems that meeting Cloud outside of her house was all part of Aerith’s plan.

Square Enix usually tweets little tidbits of behind-the-scenes information. Aside from little details in scenes, it shares concept art and development diaries. Previous pieces of trivia focused on Rude, Don Corneo, “Weiss the Immaculate,” and Reno.

FFVII Remake is readily available on the PS4, PS5, and Windows PC.
