Best Backgrounds to Choose in Starfield

Starfield features a comprehensive character creator screen where you pick what type of galactic spacefarer you want to be and select elements like your background. Your background is arguably the most important decision you’ll make here. It is like your starting class in a way, determining your first three skills and occasionally offering you unique dialogue choices.

Skills allow you to do various wonderful techniques in Starfield, such as pilot rarer ships, use a booster pack, slide in combat, have a stealth meter, pick locks, persuade people, and so on. Without them, you aren’t able to do any of these. With so many backgrounds and skills, these are the best ones you should consider in Starfield, though you can’t go wrong with any of them.

What can be some of the best Starfield backgrounds?

Bounty Hunter

Skills are as follows:

  • Piloting
  • Boost Pack Training
  • Targeting Control Systems

This is the ultimate starship starter pack. You get an immediate boost to your ship skills while also letting you zip around planets as a bounty hunter with your jet pack.

Combat Medic

  • Pistol Certification
  • Wellness
  • Medicine

This is an excellent survival background. Your healing items are better and you have more health than most players from the start. While pistols aren’t the best, they are quite common weapons at least. And if you pick the Kid Stuff trait, spoilers, you’ll get a pistol that will make this skill worth it.

Cyber Runner

  • Stealth
  • Security
  • Theft

This is the ultimate rogue or thief background to play. All three are essential skills for everyone, letting you sneak around well, pick locks, and even pickpocket NPCs.

Cyberneticist

  • Medicine
  • Security
  • Lasers

This is one of my favorites because I like all three skills. Boosting your healing items is always good, Security should be a required early skill for everyone, and laser weapons are some of the best.

Diplomat

  • Persuasion
  • Commerce
  • Wellness

This is my favorite of all the backgrounds and the one I picked in Starfield. You get two excellent skills for boosting your credits and persuasion in conversations, plus some more health. Also, this background comes with some solid but rare conversation options.

Explorer

  • Lasers
  • Astrodynamics
  • Surveying

This is a nice all-around class, with a bit of combat, space travel, and planetary exploration thrown in there.

File Not Found

  • Wellness
  • Ballistics
  • Piloting

This is by far the most fascinating and mysterious background. You get three well-rounded skills to help with your ship and overall survival. But the real draw here is your blank slate personality, which plays well into the game’s story.

Industrialist

  • Persuasion
  • Security
  • Research Methods

This is a solid background, offering two vital skills for interacting with the world and NPCs. Plus, you get a leg up on researching new experiments.

Sculptor

  • Medicine
  • Geology
  • Persuasion

Persuasion is always a welcome skill for sometimes avoiding unnecessary combat, but the boost to healing items and Geology, which is a rare starting skill, make this an underrated background.

Space Scoundrel

  • Pistol Certification
  • Piloting
  • Persuasion

This is the ultimate Han Solo background class. You can fly ships, blast enemies, and have a silver tongue all at once.

Starfield is available for the Xbox Series X and PC.
