Before Bayonetta there was Devil May Cry 4’s femme fatale Gloria, known for her dynamic scenes and risqué outfit. A recently released art book for Devil May Cry reveals that Capcom were actually being careful with her designs.

The above excerpt on Gloria in the Devil May Cry 3142 Graphic Arts book, published by Udon Entertainment, notes the following:

 

All the embroidery and lace on her costume was a real pain, but we had to be careful not to make her sexuality vulgar in any way. A producer praised us for creating a character who was a hit with the North American audience!

If Gloria’s final design was the result of Capcom being careful “not to make her sexuality vulgar in any way,” it makes you wonder what she would’ve looked like had they gone all out in the first place.
