Cigarettes May Save Your Life In Vanquish

I met up with Sega for a behind closed doors look at Vanquish, the third person shooter action game from PlatinumGames. Sega emphasized the “action” part because, as they say, Vanquish, is faster paced than other cover shooters.

It also has a part where Sam is riding a moving cart through the city-like space station. Sega demoed one of these levels where Sam, the combat suit creating hero from Vanquish, had to defend himself from enemies dropping in from helicopters flying above him. The rail cart was armed with turrets that Sam could use and a few cover points. However, movement was really controlled by the cart which kept rolling down a track.

Another level had Sam on lower ground than his robotic enemies. Sam could use the suit’s boost feature, a high speed dash, to move up the hill hiding behind one cover point to the next. Having the high ground gave Russian robots an edge, but Sam has a trick up his sleeve. He can light a cigarette and toss it to decoy robots while he boosts to a different cover point. When the robots roll over to inspect the cigarette, Sam can pull off the suit’s focus feature, which makes time slowdown (think bullet time) and blast the curious machines before they can figure out where he escaped to.

I got a chance to play Vanquish too and our impressions of the game are coming.
