Kaleido Games has announced that its competitive shmup Vortex Attack will be out on Steam on May 27th. Once launched, the studio will be arranging regular online tournaments through Steam, giving players the chance to win in-game prizes.

In Vortex Attack, your goal goes beyond trying to destroy enemies, as you must close black holes with the energy dropped by its guardians upon their destruction. There are 200 levels of this with increasingly difficult foes to take on, including bosses. Luckily, there are 11 ship models to unlock and upgrade as you play, meaning that revisiting levels with a new loadout can be a good idea if you’re struggling at any point.

As well as the online tournaments, Vortex Attack’s multiplayer design includes online leaderboards for each of the levels and local play with up to three players shooting up the screen simultaneously—it’s meant to be frantic, with a large number of particles on-screen at once.

From May 20th, Vortex Attack will also be available to play as a coin-op machine in the Arcade Con arcade developer conferences in Spain. You can find out more about the game on its website.
