"It’s not an ordinary shooter, it’s little bit like a new genre," Tomonobu Itagaki said about his new game Devil’s Third in an interview with Game Watch. "Nowadays, shooters are mostly war romps or perhaps like survival games where you use airguns," Itagaki stressed later in the interview emphasizing that his game is not a shooter.

Players can pick up weapons like a kukuri knife, Japanese swords, and a sledgehammer in Devil’s Third. Itagaki says just like the real world anything you can get your hands on can be a weapon where you beat another character to death. Devil’s Third also has hand-to-hand combat, which makes the game a hybrid, in Itakgai’s opinion.

Devil’s Third’s campaign mode only supports one player. Itagaki confirms there will be a multiplayer mode, but hasn’t settled on the number of players. He says he will be pleased if the the game can support 32 players. You can use all three attack options – guns, weapons, and martial arts in multiplayer. Itagaki says Devil’s Third will have Hollywood talent for voice acting, but didn’t name an actor. The game also has motion actors too.

Itagaki says the game is roughly 20% to 30% complete and will be released in early 2013. Valhalla Games grew to between 60 and 70 employees.

The core message of Devil’s Third? "Conflict," Itagaki answered.
