Dragon Quest XI’s Nintendo Switch Version Is Built In Unreal Engine 4



Square Enix attended The Unreal Fest East 2017 this weekend, where Dragon Quest creator Yuji Hori, producer Yosuke Saito, and other staff shared bits on the upcoming Switch version of Dragon Quest XI. [Thanks, Hachima.]


According to comments on those who attended the event, it started out with Horii saying “Huh? Are we allowed to talk about it [Dragon Quest XI] being developed in Unreal Engine 4?” to which programmer Mitsuru Kamiyama responded with “But you already said it!!”


Following the reveal of Dragon Quest XI being built in Unreal Engine 4, Square Enix shared that the PS4 version of the game was made using an Unreal Engine 4 version that didn’t support the Switch, so it hasn’t been that easy. Dragon Quest XI was made in Unreal Engine 4.13, but now with Nintendo Switch support with Unreal Engine 4.15 Square Enix says they’re hard at work on the upcoming version.


On another interesting note, Square Enix mentioned that doing battle balance adjustments was faster on the PS4 version’s Unreal Engine 4, so they worked on the battle adjustments there and then reflected its changes onto the 3DS version.


Dragon Quest XI is available in Japan for PlayStation 4 and Nintendo 3DS. The game releases in the West in 2018. A release has yet to be announced for the Nintendo Switch version.
