Is Gears of War E-Day a Prequel?

The game depicts Emergence Day, a pivotal moment in the Gears of War universe. Gears of War: E-Day depicts the first brutal invasion of the Locust in the world of Sera. Creative Director Matt Searcy and Brand Director Nicole Fawcette told that the story of E-Day is at the heart of the Gears universe. Saying it is a moment where themes of brotherhood, brutality, and resilience converge.

The game will explore the origins of the Chainsaw Lancer and other iconic elements. Additionally, providing a look at the younger Marcus Fenix and Dom Santiago and the beginnings of their legendary bond.

What we know about how Gears of War E-Day will play

Developers at The Coalition are building this origin story from the ground up using Unreal Engine 5. This new entry aims to recreate the intense third-person action and emotional storytelling that fans love but with modern enhancements.

The trailer showcases a reimagined Locust Drone, aiming to restore the fearsome presence these antagonists once had. Studio Art Director Aryan Hanbeck told that they are redesigning the Locust to appear as “living nightmares.” Tapping into primal fears to provide a fresh yet familiar threat.

E-Day is not just a spin-off but a crucial addition to the mainline series, set to enrich the lore and offer a deeper understanding of the events that shaped the Gears universe. The trailer even features a new instrumental cover of “Mad World,” evoking the emotional tone of the original game’s memorable advertisements.

Gears of War: E-Day is currently in development for the Xbox Series X and PC. There is no announced release date or window for the game yet.
