Final Fantasy VII Ever Crisis Trailer Shows Active Time Battle Features

A new trailer for the upcoming Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis showed off the battle system, including some of the special attack animations for characters like Cloud, Tifa, and Barret. It also offered us a glimpse at new mechanics like Command Stance and Limit Combos.

The main battle system is based on the Active Time Battle system from the original Final Fantasy VII, with some optimizations for smartphones. Characters build up action pips over time that they can then use to unleash attacks, spells, or materia abilities. The trailer also confirms the inclusion of Auto and Accelerated modes for easier grinding. We also see animations for abilities like Cloud’s Cross Slash and Braver, Barret’s Grenade Bomb, Tifa’s Somersault and Aerith casting an unnamed spell.

New to the battle system are the Command Stance and Limit Combo features, which will give players further options in Ever Crisis. The Command Stance is a set of sizable buffs that can switch between offense and defense oriented bonuses, while Limit Combo’s appear to grant  a damage multiplier when more than one Limit Break is used in succession. In the trailer we can see Cloud’s party switching from a Defensive Stance, granting -30% physical and magic damage taken and +50% healing potency, to an offensive one offering +25% physical and magical damage dealth as well as bonuses to the sigils mechanic. This lets the team maximise survivability while building up their limit breaks before amplifying their damage when unleashing them in a combo. We don’t know yet if there will be other stances other than Attack and Defense, but some of the number values changed between the different fights, suggesting that they may be able to be upgraded or else change based on party composition.

We recently got a look at a new Sephiroth-focused story in a trailer, as well as previews of 2 songs revealed from the soundtrack.

Final Fantasy VII: Ever Crisis will launch for mobile devices on September 7, 2023.
