Square Enix announced a collaboration comic between Final Fantasy XIV and the mahjong-based manga series Saki. Titled Saki and Final Fantasy XIV, the spinoff manga will show how Saki Miyanaga and her friends from the Kiyosumi High School Mahjong Club play the Doman Mahjong side game inside the online RPG. [Thanks, 4Gamer!]
This collaboration spinoff manga will be published on Square Enix’s Manga UP! mobile app, available to download from the Japanese Google Play and Apple App Store. The first two episodes will be published on January 22, 2021. Square Enix will add more episodes on the 4th Friday of every month afterward.
Saki is a Japanese manga series that tells the story of Saki Miyanaga, a high school freshman who has a natural talent for playing mahjong. The manga, published in Square Enix’s Young Gangan magazine since February 2006, is still ongoing as of this writing. The series is also known for its anime adaptation, with the first season aired in 2009. The franchise had its own mahjong video games released on PlayStation Portable and Vita from 2010 to 2016, although none of them were actually made by Square Enix.
Final Fantasy XIV is immediately available on PC and PlayStation 4. On December 29, 2020, Square Enix held an annual mahjong tournament where prominent game creators like Naoki Yoshida, Yosuke Saito, and Yasumi Matsuno played mahjong in real life. The Japanese game format served as a basis for the Doman Mahjong side game in the online RPG.
