After a successful run of the Super Mario Brothers Super Show, DiC dropped the live action segments for the Adventures of Super Mario Brothers. The cartoon only series is set in the Super Mario Brothers 3 timeline (complete with raccoon tail power-ups!), but there are some differences. The most notable change is the names of Bowser’s Koopalings. Morton, Koopaling from the second stage was called Bigmouth Koopa and Ludwig von Koopa got named Kooky Von Koopa. Also Mario appears in the “real world” on more than one occasion to foil King Koopa’s plots. Who would have thought Koopa wants to conquer Earth too? Continuity differences aside I have some fond memories of the series and it might be worth checking out again when the DVDs hit stores tomorrow.
On top of the 26 fifteen minute episodes Shout Factory is adding in a bonus disc with the backstory of the Adventures of Super Mario Brothers 3, concept art and an interactive writer’s bible as seen in the DVD trailer. If you want to take a longer walk down memory lane see the opening and a clip from the show.
