It’s a shame Nintendo passed on localizing For the Frog the Bell Tolls. It’s a clever game that blends 2D platforming and a Zelda overworld. You play as the Sabure Prince who leaves his comfortable life to rescue Princess Tiramisu before his rival Prince Richard can save her. The prince is overly trusting and at times naive. He starts the game with a fortune of coins, which are stolen when you visit a shop.
Kind of looks like The Legend of Zelda: Link’s Awakening, right? Nintendo released For the Frog the Bell Tolls a year before the Game Boy Zelda game. Later in the game, the Sabure Prince gets abilities to transform into a frog and a snake.
Nintendo will re-release For the Frog Bell Tolls as a 3DS Virtual Console download on September 5. Blaster Master, the Famicom version, will also be available on the same day.
