After being in closed beta for a year, 2D platform-fighter Brawlhalla is now in open beta for Windows and Mac on Steam, and it’s free-to-play too.

If you’re wondering how the creators make money through the game, cosmetic items such as new skins and taunts are available for Mammoth Coins, which is the in-game currency.

The game itself supports online and local competitive and co-op modes for up to eight players. There are ranked and unranked matches, free-for-all and team-based matches, as well as variants such as Brawlball and Bombsketball. Up to four players can go into Spectator Mode and watch matches too.

A single player mode is also provided that lets you practice your moves against AI bots in tournaments. It has 17 characters to choose from at the moment that each have their own signature moves, weapon combinations, and stats to get to grips with.
