Zombiesaurus Games has released its short but tough freeware action platformer CastleMania which, if the title wasn’t clue enough already, is a tribute to retro Castlevania games.

CastleMania was actually made for the NES Jam, which was held from September 1st to October 1st over on itch.io. So, yes, that means CastleMania was made in just 30 days. Oh, and good news – it supports controllers as well as keyboards.

The game has four challenging rooms to beat, packed with classic Castlevania features, such as candlesticks you can destroy, and Medusa head-like flying enemies that’ll annoy you as they push you off platforms.

There’s also a boss at the end but I haven’t managed to reach it yet. You only get three lives to get through the entire game, you see. And, well, it takes a few replays just to work out how to safely pass through each room. The second room with its rising spike floor has killed me too many times, I’ll say.

If you want to give it a go, you can play CastleMania for free in your browser. Good luck!
