Game Informer has published its latest interview with Game Freak during their month of Pokémon coverage, and this time co-founder, director, and producer Junichi Masuda and Pokémon Sun/Moon director Shigeru Ohmori discussed their favorite Pokémon spin-off titles.
Masuda replied that his favorite was Pokémon GO, though he then noted he wasn’t sure if that could even be counted as a spin-off. As for Ohmori, he went with Pokémon Snap, saying that one of the best parts of the N64 title was being able to print out the in-game photos.
“I played a lot of Pokémon Snap. I got really into it,” Ohmori said. “The most fun part for me – this may have been a Japan-only thing – but you could take your game to a convenience store and print out the photos you took and could use them like stickers and put them on things. I just had a lot of fun being able to take the photos in the game and print them out as things that I could use.”
The devs were then asked what kind of Pokémon spin-offs they’d like to see in the future. Masuda said the following, referencing Rhyhorn Racing from Pokémon X/Y:
“It’s kind of an Easter Egg from X and Y, but Rhyhorn Racing was a thing in that world. There might be a message in there that I really want to create Rhyhorn racing.”
As for Ohmori, he replied that he would like to see a “2D side-scrolling” action game:
“I really want to try working on a real action-focused game. Of course, we’ve kind of got those already with fighting games as well so it’s hard to say what it would be. Like a 2D side-scrolling action game, maybe.”
