For 7DFPS (7 Day First Person Shooter), Australian developer Andy Sum created a parody of first-person shooters and the hype culture that surrounds them. It’s called GAME OF THE YEAR: 420BLAZEIT vs xxXilluminatiXxx [wow/10 #rekt edition] – Montage Parody The Game.
It plays like many other first-person shooters, but has a wubwubwub dubstep soundtrack, and to increase your health you have to eat Doritos and drink Mountain Dew found in the levels. This also decreases your “hungryiness” and “thirst4Dew” levels. You’re also given a “Mountain Dew Ghetto Blasta” at the beginning of the game.
This is an obvious dig at the game industry’s commercial relationship with Doritos and Mountain Dew, both products being heavily advertised alongside games. (Who can forget this image of game journalist Geoff Keighley, for example.)
That’s only the start of GAME OF THE YEAR: 420BLAZEIT. Further in, as you shoot enemies you’ll find that various sound clips play, text flashes on the screen, as well as images and gifs bounce around in your field of view.
These include Sonic running around the screen, a kid shouting “are you recording?” from a YouTube clip, the words “get rekt,” “no scope,” and “420BLAZEIT,” as well as loads of memes that worship your apparent shooting skills. It’s a cluster of praise and hyperbolic screen effects.
It’s an effort to recreate and then overblow the style of montage videos that communities built around successful shooters like Call of Duty create regularly to showcase their best feats of skill in the game.
