Monolith Productions, developers of F.E.A.R. and the No One Lives Forever games are working on an off-the-wall project: a competitive team FPS set in the Batman universe, titled Gotham City Imposters.

Gotham City Imposters will feature two rival gangs: the Bats and the Jokerz, inspired by Batman and the Joker respectively. The two gangs will fight for control of Gotham City, and players will play as either a hero or a villain, complete with customizable costume and homebrewed gadgets, to take on the opposing gang alongside their team members.

Monolith say the game will have a “wide range of traditional and imagined weapons” and that the game will be an exaggerated take on first-person shooters. Gotham City Imposters will be a digital download title on Xbox Live Arcade, PC and PlayStation Network.

Food for thought:

Crazy as this may sound, it isn’t a concept entirely unheard of. Batman Beyond had a street gang called the Jokerz, while the Dark Knight movie had Batman imposters, inspired by Batman, trying to disrupt criminal activity. Neither kind was very successful, thanks to Bruce and Terry (the latter in Beyond).
