While Final Fantasy XVI consists of basically single “stages” rather than connected areas, there is still fast travel. It also doesn’t work all that different than I’m other action, adventure, or RPG titles. You basically visit places, then earn the ability to immediately “jump” to them after a certain point in the story. Then, as long as that spot is accessible and you can fast travel, it’s available as an option.
How to fast travel via the World Map in Final Fantasy XVI
This one’s easy. Once you unlock the world map, you can access it either by head into the main menu or leaving an area. You’ll then be able to select different “nodes” for locations Clive visited before and can return to. Early on, one of the only ones will be the hideaway, but more open up. As long as you’ve been somewhere and it shows up on the map as an option again, you can return. Just select a spot that is available, hold the cross button, and you can go there.
How to fast travel via Obelisks in Final Fantasy XVI
This option involves a bit more legwork on the part of the player, and it doesn’t unlock until you get to the story quest “Louder than Words” at Orabelle Downs. As you go through certain locations, you’ll pass Obelisks. The best way I can describe them is as checkpoints. When you pass one, it automatically registers without needing to press any other buttons. It then is registered as a fast travel point both via the local map (accessed with the center touchpad) or via the world map.
You can also eventually unlock the ability to ride a Chocobo to travel more quickly in Final Fantasy XVI, but that takes a while.
Final Fantasy XVI is available for the PlayStation 5. There is a six-month exclusivity period.
