How to Recruit Riufan in Eiyuden Chronicle

Riufan is one of the more unconventional people to recruit in Eiyuden Chronicle. That’s because he won’t give you the time of day until Nowa is “strong” enough, and then you still need to face him to add him to your team.

How do I recruit Riufan in Eiyuden Chronicle?

Here’s the thing about Riufan… even though you’ll be able to see and talk to him right away after reaching Euchrisse and reuniting with old friends from Eltisweiss, he won’t join you right away. He’ll be willing to chat, but refuses to fight you and calls you a weakling. I was at level 30 when I got that “talk” from him.

By the way, you can find Riufan here on the Hishahn map:

Now, I’m not sure if it is tied to Nowa’s level or story progress, but Riufan was willing to fight me one I’d finished the mainline story mission that takes place in Old Hishahn and returned to Hishahn. By that point, I’d raised Nowa’s level to 32.

Once Riufan is willing to fight you in Eiyuden Chronicle, you need to defeat him in a 1-on-1 fight with Nowa to recruit him. I recommend visiting the Hishahn blacksmith to forge Nowa’s weapon as high as possible, get him some good equipment, and have a lot of Quality Healing Herbs on hand, because Riufan hits hard! I ended up even waiting until Nowa was at level 33, as in my first two attempts Riufan got some lucky critical hits in and absolutely wiped me out before I’d even gotten his health down to half.

Is Riufan good in Eiyuden Chronicle?

Riufan is much stronger in his 1-on-1 fight than he is as an ally. He has medium-length reach, which helps. However, he doesn’t have the earth-based AOE attack he used in that match you needed to win to recruit him.

If you already have a solid group, though, you might not have room for him. Once I recruited him, I was pretty much dedicated to my party of Nowa, Garr, Kogen, Carrie, Mellore, and Francesca

You will need him to recruit Lam, though!

Eiyuden Chronicle: Hundred Heroes is available on the Switch, PS4, PS5, Xbox One, Xbox Series X, and PC.
