How to Tame and Raise Spirits in Moonstone Island

Moonstone Island contains creatures known as Spirits that you can tame and raise to aid you in your adventure. These creatures come in a variety of shapes and sizes across eight elemental types. Here are some tips on building up your team and keeping them in fighting shape.

How to Tame Spirits in Moonstone Island

Spirits can be found on every island in the game, with their types determined by the island you catch them from. There are two exceptions, as Ice types will only show up in Winter while Psychic types will only appear during a Psychic Storm. Spirits can also be found in dungeons, but after you defeat a dungeon’s boss, no more will spawn there.

You can tame a spirit by feeding it an item that fills a heart-shaped meter during a battle. You can see these hearts sitting to the right of their health bars. In order to fill this, select Feed during a battle and use an item which has a “TAME” value listed on it. For example, at the start of the game and every Spring, the readily available Flax Flower items are your best bet. Other seasons provide their own plants, such as the Pinwheel Flower in Summer.

The amount you’ll need to feed to a Spirit varies greatly. Sometimes a single Flax Flower can fill up a Spirit’s heart, other times you’ll need to feed them 3-4. You won’t be able to feed Spirits anything if they’re dizzy, so you need to avoid breaking their armor. The success rate of taming a spirit doesn’t seem to have much to do with how much their health bar has been depleted.

You can only tame Spirits that have this heart by their name. If a heart is locked, it means that Spirit is too high level for you to tame. To fix this, you need to unlock parts of the Skill Tree that allow you to catch higher level Spirits. Some Spirits will have a skull icon next to their name instead. These Spirits cannot be tamed under any circumstance. Dungeon bosses are a great example of this.

There is another way to obtain Spirits, however. Even if you’re unable to tame a Spirit directly in battle, there is a chance that winning a battle can reward you with an egg. This egg can then be placed in your Spirit Barn after you have crafted a Spirit Nest and Spirit Stall from the Moonstone Enchanter. These eggs will provide a random Spirit of its type, so it’s not the best solution if there’s a specific Spirit you’re trying to tame.

How to Raise Spirits in Moonstone Island

Spirits you tame will be sent to one of two places, and here you can raise them to gain improved stats and abilities. Spirits in your Medallion won’t need to be fed, but those that get sent to the Spirit Barn will need to have food placed in their Stall. You can also save up to build Moonstone Spirit Stalls, which will keep your Spirits fed automatically.

All Spirits can be fed items to boost them, regardless of where they’re stored. While most stat boosts from items are temporary, there are two types of item worth feeding Spirits for permanent boosts. The first of these are XP boosting items such as the Eye Berry, which will increase a Spirit’s XP without the need to go into battle. The second item worth feeding to Spirits is the Talisman.

Talismans can be obtained from archways across the islands. They’re marked on your map as blue icons and will be ticked off whenever you use activate them. Each arch can be activated once per season, and each activation grants a Talisman. These Talismans can be fed to Spirits to make changes to their movesets by adding, removing or upgrading a card in their deck. Ideally, you want to use these to create a stronger balance of armor-breaking and damage-dealing cards, and to ensure your cards are doing plenty of damage.

Don’t forget to check on your Spirits whenever they level up too. Each level increase will boost their stats, but this needs to be done manually by speaking to them afterwards. You can tell if a Spirit is ready to get a stat boost when they have a yellow plus sign over their head.

Spirits do have a level cap, so if your squad hits that point you will need to head out and tame some more before continuing with dungeons and temples.

Moonstone Island is available now for the PC. A Switch version is in development.
