Square Enix is expanding into the social game space with titles such as Sengoku Ixa and Chocobo’s Crystal Tower. Knights of the Crystal, like Chocobo’s Crystal Tower, we first heard about the game through a trademark and it’s another game designed for GREE.
GREE is a platform similar to Mixi or Facebook, which surged thanks to their mobile phone interface. One difference between GREE and other social network services is its bare bones, bulletin board style, business-only feel. That changed a bit as GREE grew in popularity since video game publishers started making games for it.
And Knights of the Crystal is one of those games. While the logo and title screams Final Fantasy, this is a new intellectual property with Final Fantasy elements. Knights of the Crystal is a RPG where players take on quests in search of treasure, has a job change system, and artwork from Final Fantasy Tactics A2 artist Ryoma Ito. Knights of the Crystal uses a microtransaction model which means its free to play, but some items cost cold hard cash.
