On top of HP and MP, Lightning also has Energy Points (EP) which can be used to freeze time when she uses Lightspeed or to cast recovery spells on herself. EP is also consumed if Lightning uses Decoy. This ability summons a moogle that distracts enemies.

While an enemy is busy gnawing on a moogle decoy, Lightning can run around it and hit its weak point. After the moogle takes a certain amount of damage it will disappear.
EP can also be used on the field for Chronostasis. This ability also stops time so Lightning can complete timed quests like a medicine delivery quest.
Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII comes out on February 11 in North America and February 14 in Europe.
