The rumor explosion over the weekend has been reported enough, but the Lips project sounds suspiciously familiar. Joystiq reports that Inis, the creator of cheerful music games like Gitaroo Man and Ouendan, might be the developer. However, Lips has primarily been attracting attention as a competitor to Singstar with the “killer” features of allowing custom music and motion control.
Microsoft certainly has the technology to “strip” lyrics from songs. They implemented it on the original Xbox with the Xbox Music Maker. I don’t remember it being great, but it was entertaining to record awful singing a handful of times. The question is what can Inis, if they are working on it, bring to the table to distinguish Lips from the established Karaoke Revolution and popular in Europe Singstar brand? Karaoke Beat Agents with motion controlled beat tapping?
